Yeah, I started this thread... just now came back to read it. I just NOW thought of a song! Anywho, cool how someone mentioned Imogen Heap... 'Hide and Seek' is a great song. Of course, I also threw up in my mouth a little when someone mentioned Nickleback... I'm just a little burnt out from them b/c of the radio. Anywho, MY song was 'She Floats' by Vanessa Carlton. It's got some cool piano. It's kind of crazy and has some neat sound effects and the schizo aspect of it brings River to mind.

Goodnight, and have a pleasant tomorrow.

KAYNA

I love my captain

Morwen, I love4 Loreen McKennitt. The Two trees makes me think of both River and Mal.
Gaze no more in the bitter glass
The demons, with their subtle guile,
Lift up before us when they pass,
Or only gaze a little while;
For there a fatal image grows
That the stormy night receives,
Roots half hidden under snows,
Broken boughs and blackened leaves.
For all things turn to barenness
In the dim glass the demons hold,
The glass of outer weariness,
Made when God slept in times of old.
There, through the broken branches, go
The ravens of unresting thought;
Flying, crying, to and fro,
Cruel claw and hungry throat,
Or else they stand and stiff the wind,
And shake their ragged wings: alas!
Thy tender eyes grow all unkind:
Gaze no more in the bitter glass.

And for Mal, I have to go with Behind Blue Eyes by The Who. Serriously, I'm obsessed with this concept. I posted a wallpaper of this in the BSR, my sig on serenitymovie.org is the same theme and I even made a fanvid of it. See for youself. Here's the link.

Also, for River again, Mad World. Originally by Tears For Fears, but I prefer the Donnie Darko version for this. (I can't remember who did this version)

Inara's feelings for Mal (especially in tHoG), Sally's song from A Nightmare Before Christmas

I think that's all for now.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Op: You're fighting a war you've already lost.
Mal: Yeah, well I'm known for that.
Renegade by Warren Zevon (from the CD "Mr. Bad Example)sounds like it was written at Serenity Valley, do yourself a favor, find a copy of this song!!!!!
Reneagade:
Some prayers never reach the sky
Some wounds never heal
They still say someday the South will rise
Man, I want to see that deal
I don't want to grow old gracefully
I don't want to go 'til it's too late I'll
be some old man in the road somewhere
Kneeling down in the dust by the side of the Interstate
I am a renegade
I've been a rebel all my days
I am a renegade
I've been a rebel all my days
We were hopelessly outnumbered
It was a lost cause all along
But when we heard the bugles call
We swore we'd stand or fall together right or wrong
We ain't seen no reconstruction here
Just the scorched earth all around
And the high school band played "Dixieland"
While they tore our tattered flags and banners down
I am a renegade
I've been a rebel all my days
I am a renegade
I've been a rebel all my days
Some prayers never reach the sky
Some wars never end
Some dreams refuse to die
Next time I would rather break than bend
I am a renegade
I've been a rebel all my days
I am a renegade
I've been a rebel all my days
There's an ol' man called de Mississippi;
That's the ol' man I don't like to be!
What does he care if the world's got troubles?
What does he care if the land ain't free..
Ol' Man River,
That Ol' Man River
He mus' know sumpin' But don't say nuthin',
He jes' keeps rollin',
He keeps on rollin' along.
He don't plant taters,
He don't plant cotton,
An' dem dat plants 'em
Is soon forgotten,
But Ol' Man River,
He jes' keeps rollin' along
You an' me, we sweat an' strain,
Body all achin' an' racked wid pain -
Tote that barge and
You show a little grit and
You lands in jail...
But I keeps laffin' instead of cyrin'
I must keep fightin';
Until I'm dyin'
And Ol' Man River,
He just keeps rollin' along
Ever since I viewed a link from this board,
Nickleback's "Savin' Me"
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-2860205753500133477&q=firefly
I think of Firefly everytime I hear it. I really like that only one episode was used (Out of Gas) and it really suites a video, not too many dialoge scenes.
Ok, I know there are a lot of people who hate Nickleback. I'm one of the people who loved them in the beggining and hated them as they got too commercial, but their newest songs are slowly warming me up to them again and I just got this one song that I listened to simply because I thought it was a beautiful song, then I listened to the lyrics, and listened again, then I looked for the lyrics themselves and people, if NOTHING screams more Mal and Inarah and their un-requited love than this song, then I don't know what is. Get the song, download it if you have to, because once you put the lyrics with the song it will break your heart, make your spine shiver and just go DAMN! I ain't joking.
NICKLEBACK
"Far Away"
This time, This place
Misused, Mistakes
Too long, Too late
Who was I to make you wait
Just one chance
Just one breath
Just in case there's just one left
'Cause you know,
you know, you know
CHORUS
That I love you
I have loved you all along
And I miss you
Been far away for far too long
I keep dreaming you'll be with me
and you'll never go
Stop breathing if
I don't see you anymore
On my knees, I'll ask
Last chance for one last dance
'Cause with you, I'd withstand
All of hell to hold your hand
I'd give it all
I'd give for us
Give anything but I won't give up
'Cause you know,
you know, you know
CHORUS
So far away
Been far away for far too long
So far away
Been far away for far too long
But you know, you know, you know
I wanted
I wanted you to stay
'Cause I needed
I need to hear you say
That I love you
I have loved you all along
And I forgive you
For being away for far too long
So keep breathing
'Cause I'm not leaving you anymore
Believe it
Hold on to me and, never let me go
Keep breathing
'Cause I'm not leaving you anymore
Believe it
Hold on to me and, never let me go
Keep breathing
Hold on to me and, never let me go
Keep breathing
Hold on to me and, never let me go
If I'm a bitch, then life just got interesting
Gotta say every time I listen to U2's Elevation I think of Firefly:)
High, higher than the sun
You shoot me from a gun
I need you to elevate me here
At corner of your lips
As the orbit of your hips
Eclipse
You elevate my soul
I've got no self control
Been living like a mole now
Going down, excavation
I and I in the sky
You make me feel like I can fly
So high
Elevation
A star
Lit up like a cigar
Strung out like a guitar
Maybe you can educate my mind
Explain all these controls
Can't sing but I've got soul
The goal is elevation
A mole
Digging in a hole
Digging up my soul now
Going down, excavation
I and I in the sky
You make me feel like I can fly
So high
Elevation
Love
Lift me up out of these blues
Won't you tell me something true
I believe in you
A mole
Digging in a hole
Digging up my soul now
Going down, excavation
Higher now
In the sky
You make me feel like I can fly
So high
Elevation
I choose to rise instead of fall- U2
Bump it up!
I'm working on putting together a CD (probably more) of songs like these and I gotta thank everyone for their ideas! Here's a few a picked up that I haven't seen on here yet:
"Don't Fence Me In" A bunch of different people have done this, but it's sooo Mal.
Also, I found this song "Saint Simon" by The Shins, seems to fit.
Pink Floyd's "Vera" is just too funny to think about Jayne and his gun.
Finally, Myspace artist 76 has done a few Firefly remixes and songs, pretty cool stuff.
Songs that remind me of Firefly:
1) "Civil War Lament" by Jack Frost -- Short, sad and sweet. No frills and beautiful.
Great, my wife is mocking me with quotes from The Venture Brothers
2) That theme song, you know, from Serenity--my wife's suggestion. Whore. Ah, she corrects me, make that companion. She probably means the show theme, anyway
3) "Gallows-Pole" by Led Zeppelin. Kind of obvious, I guess.
4) And for no reason that I can really give, "She-Spider" by Mew. One of my favorite songs --and was before I ever got the Firefly, um, bug.
PINBALLWIZARD
One song that is often overlooked is Pink Floyd's "Goodbye Blue Sky" from the Wall. I read in the RPG about how the Alliance bombed the planet Shadow, Mal's home, so badly that it remains uninhabitable to this day, and the lyrics and the guitar melody are just so beautiful i can help but think of the terror of those who were planetside:
Did you see the frightened ones?
Did you hear the falling bombs?
Did you ever wonder why we had to run for shelter
With the promise of a brave new world unveiled benieth the blue blue sky.
Did you see the frightened ones?
Did you hear the falling bombs?
The flames are all long gone but the pain lingeres on.
Goodbye blue sky, goodbye blue sky.
Goodbye, goodbye.
No, I am not insane, I am crazy. Thank you for asking.
The whole album reminds me of Firefly, as it explores personal post-war struggle. The specifics are different, but the feeling and essence are in line. It touches me in the same way Mal's struggle does.
Heart Of Gold, Neil Young. Perhaps Mal's already possessed of such a heart, but it appears to me that that he just keeps on searchin', even as he survives each moment to work at surviving the next moment.
I think that Malcolm Reynolds could identify with the tune. With more than a little resentment toward the "Hollywood" part, eh?
On Garth Brooks, "Sevens" album there is a song called "Belleau Wood". It reminds me of the episode with the war tale of the exploding fruit (before the fruit was thrown over). Been a while since someone posted on this thread, so I thought I'd bring it back.
I was listening to my music doing heat transfer homework and I think it hit me for the first time...U2's "The Wanderer" is all about Book. Before some of you go "Oh, he's just this crazy U2 fan," it's sung by Johnny Cash. It is the last song from the album Zooropa and I've posted the lyrics below.
The Wanderer
I went out walking through streets paved with gold
Lifted some stones, saw the skin and bones
Of a city without a soul
I went out walking under an atomic sky
Where the ground won't turn and the rain it burns
Like the tears when I said goodbye.
Yeah, I went with nothing, nothing but the thought of you.
I went wandering.
I went drifting through the capitals of tin
Where men can't walk or freely talk
And sons turn their fathers in.
I stopped outside a church house
Where the citizens like to sit.
They say they want the kingdom
But they don't want God in it.
I went out riding down that old eight-lane
I passed a thousand signs looking for my own name.
I went with nothing but the thought you'd be there too,
Looking for you.
I went out there in search of experience
To taste and to touch and to feel as much
As a man can before he repents.
I went out searching, looking for one good man
A spirit who would not bend or break
Who would sit at his father's right hand.
I went out walking with a bible and a gun
The word of God lay heavy on my heart
I was sure I was the one.
Now Jesus, don't you wait up, Jesus I'll be home soon.
Yeah, I went out for the papers, told her I'd be back by noon.
Yeah, I left with nothing but the thought you'd be there too
Looking for you.
Yeah, I went with nothing, nothing but the thought of you.
I went wandering.
TEACHDAIRE
Here's one for you. Many thanks to Johnny Cash.
A Boy Named Jayne
My daddy left home when I was three
And he didn't leave much to Ma and me
Just this old guitar and an empty sack of grain.
Now, I don't blame him cause he run and hid
But the meanest thing that he ever did
Was before he left, he went and named me 'Jayne.'
Well, he must o' thought that is was quite a joke
And it got a lot of laughs from a' lots of folk,
It seems I had to fight my whole life to gain.
Some gal would giggle and I'd get red
And some guy'd laugh and I'd bust his head,
I tell ya, life ain't easy for a boy named ‘Jayne.'
Well, I grew up quick and I grew up mean,
My fist got hard and my wits got keen,
I'd roam from town to town to hide my shame.
But I made me a vow to the moon and stars
That I'd search the honky-tonks and bars
And kill that man that give me that awful name.
Well, it was Persophone in mid-July
And I just hit town and my throat was dry,
I thought I'd stop and have myself a dame.
At an old saloon on a street of mud,
There at a table, dealing stud,
Sat the dirty, mangy dog that named me 'Jayne.'
Well, I knew that snake was my own sweet dad
From a worn-out picture that my mother'd had,
And I knew that scar on his cheek and his evil eye.
He was big and bent and gray and old,
And I looked at him and my blood ran cold
And I said: "My name is 'Jayne!' how do you do! Now you gonna die!"
Well, I hit him hard right between the eyes
And he went down but, to my surprise,
He come up with a knife and cut off a piece of my ear.
But I busted a chair right across his teeth
And we crashed through the wall and into the street
Kicking and a' gouging in the mud and the blood and the beer.
I tell ya, I've fought tougher men
But I really can't remember when,
He kicked like a mule and he bit like a crocodile.
I heard him laugh and then I heard him cuss,
He went for his gun and I pulled mine first,
He stood there lookin' at me and I saw him smile.
And he said: "Son, this world is rough
And if a man's gonna make it, he's gotta be tough
And I know I wouldn't be there to help ya along.
So I give ya that name and I said good-bye
I knew you'd have to get tough or die
And it's that name that helped to make you strong."
He said: 'Now you just fought one hell of a fight
And I know you hate me, and you got the right
To kill me now, and I wouldn't blame you if you do.
But ya ought to thank me, before I die,
For the gravel in ya guts and the spit in ya eye
Cause I'm the son-of-a-bitch that named you 'Jayne'.'
I got all choked up and I threw down my gun
And I called him my pa, and he called me his son,
And I come away with a different point of view.
And I think about him, now and then,
Every time I try and every time I win,
And if I ever have a son, I think I'm gonna name him
Bill or George! Anything but Jayne! I still hate that name!
Yeah, "Boy Named Sue" was the first thing I thought of when I first saw Firefly and heard that Jayne's name was...well, Jayne. Nice adaptation.
There is a song by Heart called "Allies". Everytime I hear it I can see Mal and Zoe.
I hate Simple Plan with a fiery passion that will burn in my soul for all eternity but... their song "Perfect World" kinda makes me think of Firefly.
"In a perfect world, this could never happen. In a perfect world, you'd still be here."
In a perfect world, Firefly would have never been cancelled. In a perfect world, Firefly'd still be here.
I agree with Arcadia 100%!! Nickel Creek ALWAYS reminds me of the 'Verse. If you haven't heard any of their stuff, find it now! The trio is going on indefinite hiatus after next year's tour, so we may not get much new music from 'em.
Sorry if anyone's already said it, but:
Free Bird by Lynyrd Skynyrd
The music, the lyrics, the whole vibe & feel of the song suits the show if you ask me, especially Mal.
"66 Sleepers To Summer" by Hope of the States. I have no idea what the song title means, but the lyrics remind me of Mal, and the music reminds me of music that you would hear from the Firefly soundtrack. The song was suggested to me on Launchcast, and I really like it.
"I want it all" by Queen is a good one for Mal.
Got another:
Machine Gun Man - Pride & Glory
This song really reminds me of Jayne, for obvious reasons. The whole Pride & Glory album has a Firefly vibe, but this song in particular really stands out.
