Ok, I'm obsessed with Firefly/Serenity. There it's out so I won't sound too far gone.

What would have happened to the BDH's if the Unification War hadn't happened and all the planets were peacably absorbed into the Alliance?

Here's my take:

Mal-still on the ranch on Shadow. Is succesful but not rich, has a fiesty wife and "a passel of critters". Content in a way but still bumps heads with the Alliance as the leader of the local ranchers.

Inara-by far the easiest. Most likely she would have ended up at the Training House after a stint inon the Outer Rim. Makes House Priestess easily and is revered by her students.

Simon-very successful trauma surgeon married to a daughter of one of his parent's friends, just what his parents wanted but a bit discontented at his relatively boring life.

Kaylee-running a successful mechanic shop on her home planet. She's good and sought after but she never did get to go on a Firefly. Married to a local boy after becoming pregnant.

Zoe-considering she was career military, she most likely made the Army her career and ends up a Sergeant Major (highest enlisted rank) but single.

Wash-still barnstorming around the 'verse with his dinosaurs.

Jayne-dead, killed over either a whore, whiskey or money or maybe even a job gone bad.

River-the hardest because it's hard to see her as anything than what the Alliance made her. If she hadn't been altered I could see her as an highly intuitive research scientist making several important discoveries.

What do you think?

...and Book?
When (before/during/after War)did he become a Shepherd?
(Say he wasn't always a Shepherd, and we've been given hints of his expertise in some areas)
How/where was he raised, and did he support Unification?
Drat you, Joss, for killing him off!
We probably don't know enough to say what Book would have done without the War.

I can imagine Mal being a little discontented with life.
Look at the War flashbacks in "The Message", that man isn't just confident, he's manic with it, almost arrogant about the weakness of others (even in a sarcastic, not totally serious way) and I imagine that losing the war did a great deal to dampen what might have been a man too full of himself.
He would probably be on Shadow and have loved his home, been married to a woman, had that passel of kids, but I also see him being less of a good man than he is on Serenity.
That man just has so much drive and faith in himself, he might get... bored, and take it out on people. That surge of passion he would have felt for the war effort might be something he'd look for in pointless shennanigans. I'm not sure. I don't see him perfectly happy without that lesson of utter defeat. (Not that he is now.., hehe.)

Kaylee would not have her own shop (or have it be successful) unless some lucky circumstances interfered. Her daddy barely had work for her to help with when Mal came along and she took her job mainly because.. it was a job! So, there might have been some hardship for her and her family.

Inara.. we don't know what made her go out to the Rim in the first place, if it was related to the war or not. (Look at WW2, how many people would never have met/been born had it not happened? Wars have big ripples that way.) She might still be on Sihnon. Or not. Anything's possible, because we know so little about her past.

I very much agree with your take on Simon, River, Jayne, Zoe and Wash.

Book? Is anyone's guess.

Or over a whore with whiskey and money.

This is Jayne, after all.

I admit I sort of toned my take on Mal down a bit when I wrote the first post. I just wasn't sure how much head butting he would do. He's a natural leader so he would naturally be in some sort of leadership position but I not sure if he'd work in the system or outside of it.

So I assumed that he would work within the system but that he would be a pain in the ass to the local leadership of Shadow, yet a leader of others like minded. And that being the reason he wouldn't rise much above the local level without the tempering of Serenity Valley.

I've seen it with some local politicans that are very popular locally (and relected year after year) but because of how crass they act and speak and the tactics they use to accomplish things are rejected everytime they run for a wider office. It's like we know so and so has a big mouth and is full of himself. Despite that we know he'll get things done here but we don't want him to represent us at a higher level.

You're right about Kaylee too. I was looking down the road a few years after she had established a reputation as the best engine mechanic is several worlds(which she would).
