Penny Arcade has adreesed the news

http://www.penny-arcade.com/

http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic

and also offered their views in the blog.

BTW: remeber folks its gonna take a while for the game to be made (their talking about 365 days of 2008 here, thats a long time off), so the main worry for the publishers would be how to keep intrest for the game up while they make the game...

..can anyone say Serenity 2? Say about 2008 ish

I really, really dislike MMORPGs. I have no interest in level grind, in mindless tasks to build up your character, in interacting with people who have no interest in roleplaying. If this game turns into one where it's filled with people off doing mundane tasks, hoping to get enough experience points so their 14th level Companion can become 15th level and they can get that really cool bonus feat, I'll be very disappointed.

Having said that, I think there is a market for a different type of MMORPG, one where the emphasis is on roleplaying and meaningful interaction with other players and not on combat and mindless repetition.

Anyone remember the old computer game Privateer? You purchased your ship, picked up cargo, and flew from starport to starport, dodging pirates, just trying to make a living out in the darkness of space. It was very similar to the old Traveller RPG (which, of course, is very Firefly-esque itself).

That's the kind of thing I'd like to see in the Firefly MMORPG. A richly detailed star system where you can buy a ship, smuggle goods from place to place, fly off into the black to explore unknown areas, etc. Then you could land on a planet, interact with other players and NPCs, maybe get in a scrap or two before you get together enough money to fuel your ship and head off again. Players could join together to form a crew, or they could go it alone (maybe with an NPC crew).

Combat would be deemphasized (but still exist - you do need a way to fight off those Reavers). Levels, experience points, classes and all the other cliches from RPGs would hopefully be non-existant. Your player would be defined by what you do. It would be a virtual universe where anything could happen. That's the kind of game I'd like to see.

If it's just World of Warcraft with six-shooters instead of swords and Reavers instead or Orcs, count me out.

I've been looking closely at everything they have announced so far, and there's no indication that I can see of Joss or Tim or any of the people actually involved with creating Firefly having anything to do with this.

It looks like it's simply Fox using their end of the intellectual property, which means it may or many not have ANY input from Joss or Tim, and they won't have any access to any content from Serenity.

I'm going to give it a chance, but I'm not holding my breath for a quality product.

I totally understand where your come from with the whole mmorpg level grinding thing and boring meaningless interaction, which you always see in overated games like World of Warcrap *cough*...i mean WarCraft .

If you want a real MMOG then play EVE Online, its even better than privateer, which is an awsome game btw.EVE is acually is a real MMOG.The kind that this new Firefly one should be taking ideas from.No im not talking about making it the same,im talking about it being orginal and bringing something fresh to the whole MMO genre

And your right, hell i wouldnt like it if it was just a cheap spin off of an already farmed out game like WoW,Be a damm shame

I don't think they can pull it off. It takes three to five years to develop and publish a MMOG.

For those of you worried about the engine, I suggest you look at these. The first is from the original Quake. Valve released Half Life 2 on a modified version of the same engine.

If you really do care about making this game what you want it to be, then I'm with sergeant x. Go to the forums. http://update.multiverse.net/forum/viewforum.php?f=16&theme=multiverse

Ok, for all the whinging about Windows, or the Engine (couldn't we have Kaylee work on the thing?) or anything else negative about the BDG, let's not lose sight of the important thing: IT KEEPS US FLYING! Star Trek was reborn off of less than this. Money talks, and the success of this game gives us a voice.

Hell. It's Special.

I totally agree with "Bluedrake". I am a big fan of Eve and I would love for the game to be more centred around the ship and transporting, and reaver fights. That would be enjoyable. I hate World Of Warcraft with a passion. It is pointless and stupid repeatitive for sure. I really hope that this MMORPG isn't like it. But I am very very excited to find out what it will be like.

Viva la firefly

I think this may be exactly what I need to turn some of my male friends into Browncoats! My friend Rhys plays WoW too maybe I could convince him to play the Firefly MMORPG. Also, if it's only for Windows I'll kill somebody (well not actually, I'll probably scream a bit and play some extremely violent video games). I might actually get a PC just for this purpose.

Actually, Half Life 1 used a modified version of the Quake 2 engine, not the other way around.

Quake 2:

Half Life 1:

The "Source" engine used for Half Life 2 is another beast entirely.

Hello all
I am now a browncoat (hurrah)even though i hav been in the serenity universe forever.
I'm just gonna say on the website on the original post it said the browncoats are finally getting what they wanted after campaigning for the show to come back since '02 but it isn't back. Sure the game will be great but i think we all would prefer the show back.

well I know what the first servers should be called!

"the verse"
"this land"

from what i understand the verse isnt really a full sized universe but a much smaller compacked stelar regon of at least 70 known habitable bodies and given most stelar dynamics this would mean possibly 10 or more local starsystems most likely a cluster or nebula like area
as far as i understand serenity isn not trans light so this greatly limits the useable distances

Half-life 1 is based on the Quake 2 engine. Half-life 2 has an all new engine. It's the source engine, and the first game to use it is half-life 2.

Anyone know when this is planned to be release? I did a quick bit of research and all I could come up with is "sometime in 2008."

There is an official Firefly forum on Multiverse's website. Doesn't look like they are working on it, but they haven't taken the forum down, so maybe it is only in a coma, not dead.
