In 2027, will watching FF and Serenity be like watching old, antiquated stuff that has been surpassed and overshadowed by far superior series and movies, or will it remain a singular and special show always, no matter what new gee-whizz FX and technology come along?

In my opinion, the 'verse will always remain fresh because it is about the people, not about the vfx. Firefly has characters that make you care, dialogue that makes you feel, and plots that make you pay attention. The fact that they are in space is secondary.

You need a comparison, try the Twilight Zone. Sure the visuals are corny, and the politics have changed, but the episodes still have the power to grip a viewer. I think Firefly will age like that.

20 years from now, newbie fans will still scream,
" How could Fox cancel this?"

and oldie fans will still be waiting for their refunds from BE.

and everybody will still be waiting for another sequel-- but will it be Serenity 2 or Serenity 9?

I bought Firefly over the summer, right after seeing Serenity. I have watched at least one episode every day since then.....it's kind of a loop for me....I watch the series, then I watch Done The Impossible, then finish with the movie.

As far as the future...who knows? I imagine that I'll still love the show, still love the characters as much then as I do now. I don't have any problem with it being "over"...although more shows would be great; but if not...that's OK,'cause what we have in the 14 is simply the finest, most mature, most politically-incorrect, awesome and fun show that has ever been produced.

I read how most of the cast showed up to hang out with the Fans at the cancelled Flanvention 2...that to me ( all of us , right! )says more about these folks than anything else. The actors love the show as much as the fans!....when has that ever happenned?

Firefly is all I watch......all other TV is rutting crap.

CYBERSNARK

Human behaviour doesn't change that much, just social norms. If you're positing a future society similar to "ours" (English-speaking North America post-turn of the millennium), I can't imagine the writing seeming too odd. Heck, Firefly's already pretty distanced from what's "normal" these days (non-standard use of language, wildly different and kinda improbable physical setting [a single system with >70 habitable worlds, no link to Earth], heavily-modified social setting [blend of Chinese and American culture], etc).

Another thing to keep in mind is the visuals: is it really possible to get more realistic than Firefly's visuals? I don't mean glossier or OMG MOAR CGI!!!111!!! (Lucas, I'm looking at you), but could it look more real?

Whole reason a lot of older shows look dated is because the visuals just don't stack up to modern stuff (cardboard sets, undetailed or badly-designed effects, bad makeup and costumes, etc). How would that trend develop? Maybe through 3D, or holography, or ultra-max-delux-high-def, but aside from some graininess or 2D-ness, it's possible that Firefly's visual effects are just as good as visual realism can get.

Seems to me that future viewers might just find Firefly to be "ahead of its time."
