I'm not sure how I feel about the spin-off idea, but if one DID come to exist, what would you like to see?

Another smuggler ship idea would just seem like a cheap copy.

What are some of your ideas?

Mine would be a medical ship.
The idea being that the Alliance cannot provide healthcare for everyone, or choses to leave the border planets un-covered.
There are 'mercy' ships though - crafts that travel from planet to planet, healing the sick and receiving whatever payment they can, be it money, food, or even cattle.

It has potential, I think....

I'm interested in what everyone else can come up with though.

We've got a few guys that are done waiting around, and are making a spin off themselves. I'm even considering doing the same thing. I'd be more inclined to do bounty hunters though.

The only I always go back to is one I saw posted by someone else before. I don't remember who or I'd give them the credit.

I think the captain of the alliance ship in bushwhacked would be a good central character for a spin off. He was obviously wet behind the ears and already started breaking his by the book mentality by the end of the episode. I think Joss could easily make him one of his converts from bad guy to less bad guy. Have him bend the rules a number of times. Show how some of the crew don't agree with his stance. Eventually have a mutiny or just have him kicked out of the Alliance and show him start a small ship of his own. Out to right the wrongs of the Alliance in the outer rim.

A 'prequel' series , 'Unification War'...

Great guest-star and crossover possibilities , ending in a 'Firefly' relight !

Keeping order in every verse

I'd quite like to see a spinoff from the other side of the fence. How about an Alliance Captain on the trail of some renegades and his gradual disillusionment with the cause he is supposed to be supporting.Maybe even eventually switching sides?

From this thread on the RPF:

m&page=2

"Fool Me Twice" is my, not-out-of-the-gate-yet Firefly fan film.
The basic story centers around an Alliance sergeant, at the end of his career,
sent to squelch former-Independent businessmen who have turned to smuggling under UAP rule.
This is NOT what the sergeant fought for (and watched his friends die for) in the war to unite the planets,
and that personal conflict is brought to a head in a meeting with the ex-Browncoats.
Our sergeant notes, “Yeah, well, there’s plenty for whom the cost of Unification exceeds the value.”
The story is an introduction of characters who could have many more adventures in the Firefly ‘verse.
For the sequel, the story expands to suggest an insurgent movement within the Alliance,
a look at trust and acceptance, being true to yourself, and finding your niche.
Oh, and a run in with a villain who has a framed art display of tattoo art skinned off his victims.
Cuz, you know, if yer gonna kill people, they gotta be BAD people.

At this point, every Firefly fan film mimics the show, nearly beat for beat.
Maybe I'm the only fan of the 'verse that wants to see other stories in the 'verse.
Stories about cops and robbers and Companions and politics and business could all be shot with costumes and props.
The efforts could be put into the tales themselves and creating new 'versey vistas.
NOT taking the "an older ship...with a ragtag crew...secrets...rebel past...etc., etc" path would be more of an exercise in personal creativity than mimic-ing Firefly's story parameters and then trying to make it feel different.

Mike

hehe no apology necessary. It wasn't even my idea in the first place. I wish I remember where I read it first so I could give that person credit.

I do agree that it would make a good story though. I bet Joss could come up with plenty of great characters in a show like that. Plus there would obviously be room for cameo or "cross over" type episodes with the old crew.

As much as I appreciate the fan films that are being made, I have to agree with you. Well, honestly, I'm making a short film this weekend that stars River, Kaylee and Jayne (please don't sue me, Fox). But I would really like to make an all original film. I mentioned it above, but I'd like to do bounty hunters. I was thinking of having a Browncoat serving under an Alliance captain.
