Firstly, I apologise in advance for the annoyingness of this...

Hello! I'm a big Firefly fan, and also a Uni student, and I get to write an essay on Firefly and its fans. Which is yay! :D However, with this comes an annoying 'IT task', where I have to see how fans discuss the show and interact with it, etc etc. I just want to get into obsessing over the show, but no luck!

Basically, I'd like to ask you guys if you have a moment to tell me a bit about the kind of things you like to discuss about the show, and in what ways you participate with fan culture surrounding the show?

I won't use any kind of names in the report, so you'll be completely anonymous, and this would massivey help me out as it's due Friday, and as per usual I've left it until the last minute.

Thanks a lot guys. (and sorry again for the annoying 'UNI STUDENT NEEDS HELP message...)

I like to discuss the unknowns from Firefly. Like what is Book's past, what is Inara's secret, what was the Tam's parents motivation, etc. Granted we've gotten some of those answers since the end of the series, but those are still the type of topics I like. People can string together as much evidence as they can squeeze out of what we got and then try to extrapolate on it. It's a good way to really focus on every little bit of verse we were given.

The long, convoluted past of the Browncoat movement is quite interesting. All the way back to when Firefly first aired, to the subsequent Serenity film, to Flanvention 2, CSTS, KNTR, regional Browncoat groups, etc. It's a handful, to say the least...

Huh, two in the same week. You know each other?

This is pretty much the only way I participate, is on this board and people I email. Do some fanfic, occasionally some fanart. Also joined up with a MMORPG fan project, and I've donated to help out some fan films. Also we've had some charity groups, like we sent a board member to the gulf after the oil spill to help out, and when someone comes here down on their luck looking for work, we've helped out too.

Lots of people are members of local browncoat groups, or go to conventions or shindigs, and there's the charity screenings for Can't Stop The Serenity and Equality Now, but I'm the lazy sort. They'll watch like an episode a week, and quote parts. So I'd say the series is fairly interactable.

For me, the series solidified some ideas I already had about the relationship between corruption, corporations, and government, so the interactive isn't just one way. More than that, when you become a browncoat, it kinda changes you. Some people may move on, but those of us still on this site after the first year and the optimism wears off have been pulled in and transformed like nothing else. It might sound a little ridiculous, but this show ruined all other shows for me. Really. I found, I stayed, I stopped looking.

I'll discuss most anything Firefly related anyone wants to ask about.

For me I enjoy discussing the direction that folk here think the show was intending to go. I'm a sucker for an unfinished work as it allows all sorts of interpretations. I recently posted the question 'Had Firefly ran for seven seasons where would you have liked to see it go'?, and that's the sort of thing I like to read about. Individual interpretations of the material, so to speak.
In terms of participating in fan culture - I tend to draw the characters in a cartoon style. [See Blue Sun Room].

Good luck with your project.

How do I participate in fan culture?
I'm in my local Browncoats group, we meet once a month for a "shindig" which usually includes doing something like playing mini golf or going out to a pub or going to someone's house to play games or watch episodes, I think we all have our own copy of the show on DVD so there's not a shortage of copies floating around. We run our Firefly fan table at conventions too. We ran a geeky craft fair in December where venders sold home made scifi and fantasy oriented items. Our chapter also does charitable things, in March we helped at the food bank for our shindig, they do Can't Stop the Serenity every June, where the film is shown at a local movie theater and money raised for Equality Now (I don't go because I'm a love-the-show-dislike-the-movie kind of person.

I'm well known on fanfiction.net as an avid reader and thorough reviewer of Firefly fanfiction (stories that people write about the charactors and put up online for others to read and enjoy). I only read things that I deem worth my time and attentions, I'm picky about some things regarding the charactors, but surprisingly flexible about others. The thing I like about fanfic is that everyone can continue the verse in their own way, choose their own adventure so to speak, and readers can choose which stories to read, its like having new episodes forever, but if I don't like one, I don't have to read it and it doesn't reck the story of Firefly because its just a fan story.

I just started on this site two months ago, at the urging of a good friend, whom I met through fanfic reviewing. I'd been putting it off but now I'm hooked. :)

Firefly has actually helped in my life and career, helping me solidify what I'm aiming for professionally and my dreams for the future. Sounds silly that a scifi show can do that, but its the truth. If by chance you want to include my name in there you can, RionaEire, fine with me.
