So there I was, flipping through the character list on this site.

Since when is Monty related to Mal? I just re-watched "Trash" and there is no mention of Monty's last name or of any relation. I'm confused.

JAYNE: Mal?

MAL: Yes, Jayne?

JAYNE: You got any light you wanna shed on this development?

MAL: *nonplussed look* No, Jayne.

As with much of the random snippets of information we have lying around, I ignore these little things. Especially since it has nothing to do with the show (as you said, his family name wasn't mentioned).

Or if you absolutely have to justify it: Saffron kept the name "Reynolds" and Monty took it when he married her, being the open-minded, sensitive type that he is. *bursts out laughing*

Hey, if you'll shave off your beard for a woman, taking her name is nothing, right?

Not sure what to make of it, but I somehow doubt it. They're defined in the script as war buddies. If they were cousins or something, Saffron probably would have said something to that effect. I think we can assume she'd know they had the same last name if they did. Your husband's last name (even if he is your 457th or so husband) is the sort of thing you know.

I believe the name "Monty Reynolds" was listed in the script for "The Message" that appeared here months and months ago.

Harken: "Seems odd that you would name your ship after a battle you were on the wrong side of."
Mal: "May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one."

Here's the link to the script on this site. He's just listed as 'Monty'.
