Is it a TV show, is it a movie ... does it fit either!

Ever since I watched the series on DVD I have been hooked, and it got me thinking, why did this show get cut?

I have read the old threads on this and I agree that the Friday 8pm slot of doom was the major cause ... not to mention the fact that Fox didn't play it in the right order (ie. they put the horse before the pilot). But, even given that I had trouble imagining it as a TV series.

Some of the ideas seemed pretty liberal for a larger audience. The casual viewer probably wouldn't get the whole Chinese thing, the mixture of testosterone and sensuality might have been confusing to some (ie. is it action? is it drama?), and lets face it, not a lot happened in some episodes because they were vehicles to get us to the larger story and in these days of rampent A.D.D. oriented storytelling, that doesn't seem to cut the simulated mustard protein pack.

BUT, the 20 million dollar question is whether or not you can overcome this in a 2 hour movie format.

Of course all the fans are going to go (and god knows there are a lot of us now) but what about the newbie? ... Is two hours enough time to draw a new arrival into the 'verse? Do you still try and draw out the larger story and turn it into a longer episode? Wouldn't that be just too much like a TV show? Do you start off from where the TV show left off? (you are somewhat damned if you do and damned if you don’t on that one). And how do you market something like this! Arrggg, my mind is glowing!!!

It is pretty tricky and I am sure Joss has come up with some brilliant way of dodging these meadow muffins, but I just wonder HOW!!?

Consider this.

What if the movie is somewhat successful, but doesn't blow away Star Wars 3 or anything, but does turn a profit? Just not enough to justify a sequel. To my mind, this is the best of all possible outcomes.
Regardless of how the movie does, its very release is going to quadruple the exposure of the DVD's. A lot of viewers, perhaps before even seeing the movie, are going to think "hmm, so this was a TV series?" and check it out. And all of them will be left jonesing for the rest of this story, like we all are.

Yeah, I believe in Joss too. He makes things work out. Like Buffy movie to Buffy show. Although Firefly show to a Serenity movie is hard, there's some things I'm sure that will be changed.
And if it's back on TV? I say, start from the beginning old eps and just add more. :)

*nods* darn right! And maybe we could actually see a pregnant Zoe, among other new traits for others...oh and also Simon finally getting the girl and not continue to have speculations about him (even though I don't mind them) *laughs*

With $50million for making the movie..
this film does not have to be blockbuster to be successful, frankly Universal can be confident that they can make their investment back just from DVD sales, seriously.

I also think the April release date is very smart, all the big Oscar contenders will be very old news, but none of the summer blockbusters will be coming out yet...it should be possible for 'Serenity' to take its time and build an audience.

frankly I'm expecting that just the humor and excitement will be enough to sell tickets to a lot of people who have never heard of the show, and having a vocal fan base (getting it publicity) can only help!

Personally I plan to force a bunch of friends to go with me to the first show, and we will form a line at the door, making sure that the theater owner notices that this one has potential!

oh and PS
I also want it to return to TV!

I agree, I would've really liked to have explored Zoe and Wash's marriage and the whole pregnancy issue... also of course Simon and Kaylee and their romance , and the unspoken attraction between Mal and Inara...I sort of think of Kaylee and Simon as the couple that would've gotten together early on in the series, while Mal and Inara's thing would've gotten stretched out for a long time cause of all the obstacles that Joss would've put in front of them. Hopefully the BDM will address some of that eh?? I just can't stop smiling everytime I think about it!!!

I believe the film will do pretty decent on opening weekend, at least 10 mill, then slowly throught word of mouth more and more people will go see it (assuming it's good, which i'm sure it will be).

Id still like to see the show return to tv but I think from what we've heard from the cast its unlikely this will happen for the forseeable future. I think ideally I would like to see three films get made and then a future return to tv. The problem is after the 3 films we might have used up a lot of the story for this crew so we might have to see a tv show based in the 'verse but with a slightly different angle to firefly.

Slightly OT: does anyone have toy rights yet? Wouldn't that be cool?

Put me down for 1 Serenity and 1 Vera. :)

A Vera roleplay toy would be problematical, what with the whole gun-safety issue. Poor girl'd probably hafta be done over in fluorescent orange and/or green, or something.

Of course I'm still waiting on the soundtrack (and I mean the TV soundtrack; Not the movie one even though I'll definately buy it)
