The new series "War of the Worlds" aired its first episode Sunday on Epix. Anybody happen to watch? It was pretty thrilling, and has great potential.

I'm in.

Best class I took in college was "Apocalyptic Novel." We read and studied about 8 end of the world books - fantastic. This looks worth getting Epix for.

Thanks for the share.

Man that's a great trailer. You almost didn't need to watch the episode 'cause it's all in that trailer. I like the scope of the camera work, the Alps scenery, and the European background to the whole thing is a nice change from the usual American approach.

I don't know if this series will surpass the greatness of the classic 1953 movie, but I already like it more than the Tom Cruise/Spielberg movie. And where did they dig up Elizabeth McGovern from? I haven't seen her since the 80's when she was Hollywood's golden girl. And having Gabriel Byrne's acting chops is icing on the cake.

Yeah - I stopped watching it half way!

It looks like high end production for sure, though these days even the History Channel is putting out some good looking shows.

Just as an aside: f*ck AT&T. They took over Directv and completely shat on their web site. You get redirected to AT&Ts now for anything DTv and it's impossible to use.

Ok, better now - $5 a month for Epix - good test.

Epix usually doesn't have very much to watch, but their On Demand listings are great …. lots of 50's and 60's 'B' sci fi movies, and movies about "bad girls" in prison and gangs, tight sweaters and all. I love watching all those cheesy movies with bad acting and cheap production because they're just great fun entertainment.

Odd at the timing of this, along w the news of Betelgeuse dimming and possibly ( but not really ) going supernova.

So the "signal" came from another galaxy? And then days, weeks months(?) later, we've got incoming objects?

Sorry, I tried to watch, but had to bail before the end of the 1st episode. Just bad science. Like really stupid bad.

Vega made sense ( Contact ) because it's close enough for it to receive and then send back a signal. Nothing beyond 100 light years would be eligible, say for straight up dumb luck.

Speaking of the above-mentioned Contact, I met Jake Busey a few years ago at a con in Orlando. Very nice man with a great sense of humor. He was very enthusiastic discussing his roles in Contact and Starship Troopers.

Meh - it's TV. Was Firefly all great science? Science Fantasy may be a better term for the genre...?

Did you see the Mars mini series on Nat Geo? Don't recall if you posted in that thread.

I haven’t seen it myself, but I’ve heard decent things about it.
It’s set in the early 1900s and is a 3 part miniseries.
It just came out late last year, hence my confusion.

I did not see the Mars miniseries, so I did not post.

And yes, firefly was one of the more accurate science-fiction shows to date. Odd that you would ask about that , here of all places.

There's actually another 'War of the Worlds' tv series from 1988 that airs Sunday nights on H&I channel. It ran for two seasons. I'll be watching that one too starting this week with episode 3. So many War of the Worlds, so little time!

Riiiight, because flying a gazillion miles to get heist jobs pays so well and space fuel is so cheap. And just River is pretty tetchy "science." Besides "silence in space" I'm sure there are plenty of holes.

You failed to capitalize "Firefly" btw - science!

Episode 2 was not very good, unless you like hearing the F-word a lot. Pretty disappointing.

Yep, it was pretty sad. A bit tedius, things that were so forced and a bit too cliche (black dude with a gun in a convenience store gets caught by the white owner - cue the racial tension). If you can stay in an empty hotel why not the penthouse? Military personal that don't know enough to take cover when being shot at (especially by an amazing shot). And what the eff were they doing away from their barracks? Shopping? The scientist and the little girl run INTO the building that the aliens are on top of... my god. Even the music and sound score - which I thought were good at first - starting getting a bit much.
The only thing that saved it was the last scene where the Boston Dynamics 'bot chased that human down - that was pretty cool and "we're so screwed" kind of way.

I said ' more accurate ', not absolutely and totally … even The Martian took liberties.

I can't say what the economic situation is or how much 'space fuel ' cost in the Firefly 'verse. See, there are 2 parts to the genre of science FICTION.

Please make a note of it.

All good points and I agree, but I'm not ready to give up on the show just yet.

Space fuel costs vary from place to place, anywhere between the cost of a large Mudder's Milk and a half hour with a space whore.

Thinking it might depend on the space wh... nm

So, War of the Worlds... sheesh. Just saw episode # 3. Just when I thought it couldn't possibly get worse or slooooowwwwwer. I was wrong. Laughably bad in places. "I'm going to have a smoke break on the roof and look out at all the dead bodies - be a dear and keep an eye on the Apocolypse for me, thx." So many really dumb things. And the alien robot dogs have 'nads, because of course they do. If you want to convince the audience they are bio-mechanical you have to show dog 'nads, and then poke the 'nads with a screw driver.

I'm thinking one more episode. If I don't have to see McGovern's permanent sad face or hear a great Irish actor call out, "Helen! Helen?" 30 times in 30 minutes I'll probably live longer, get back some of the time I spent on this dog.

As bad as it's looking for this series, I know I'll keep watching. It's like rubbernecking a flipped-over car on other side of the highway; you shouldn't look, but you always do.

Ep #4 has come and gone. I'm out - can't take all the nothing. I know what you mean about sticking with something - I watched way too many episodes - frack, seasons - of Walking Dead. But an alien invasion show without aliens (only their robot dogs) I can't do it. I'm going to switch my time to watching Pandemic and Devs. Devs is on Hulu with Nick Offerman - only seen 1 episode - pretty good.
