In the comic rumor column "All The Rage" (at http://www.silverbulletcomicbooks.com/rage/index1.htm ), they talk about plans, which have no fallen through, for a Serenity animated movie, like they did with the Animatrix, and how the story may be coming to comics:
Quote:

The recent delay of Joss Whedon’s Serenity isn’t the only intrigue taking place behind the scenes. Word is going around that Universal wanted to do a Serenity animated feature film direct to DVD, in the vein of The Animatrix or The Chronicles of Riddick: Dark Fury. And apparently, they were serious enough to commission a script. The writer chosen for this project was Brett Matthews, who wrote an episode of Firefly and also provided the script for Dark Fury. Matthews and Whedon came up with a story for the Serenity animated feature and Matthews was set to tackle the script.

However, for reasons that aren’t entirely clear, the Serenity animated feature isn’t happening. But that doesn’t mean this story won’t see the light of day. Dark Horse is rumored to be very interested in using the story Matthews and Whedon came up with as the basis for their first Serenity miniseries. If it happens, look for the miniseries to be written by Matthews, who already has a few comic scripts under his belt, including the Marvel Knights Spider-Man/Wolverine miniseries that came out last year.

I suspect the reason why the animated prequel was cancelled was that the previous Universal movies where they tried this (Riddick, Van Helsing) failed horribly. Still, it's nice to know they were viewing it as being in the same class as those.

That's a shame to hear. I was really looking forwards to this, and with this, it looks like they were actually going to be doing it. The comic series though, was already planned, or talked about. I guess I'll wait for that...

This is disappointing.

Maybe we'll see some animé for the sequels. . .

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

As shiny as it would have been to have an animated movie of Firefly/Serenity, when the rumor first surfaced months ago about the possibility I had to wonder how well the show would translate to animation.

I do think though that a comic book series would do well and give us all something to look forward to, as well as be used as conversion material.
