In light of Joss' post today on Whedonesque, thought that the news needed to make a place in the guerilla marketing discussion board. After all, this is the board with threads dedicated to spreading the word of Firefly and Serenity, and keeping our fandom invigorated and growing.

Also thought it might be interesting to see how a fan's post made one day might come off a bit overly optimistic... only to get some reinforcement, albeit cryptically, by Mr. Whedon a couple of days later.

_________________________________________________________________

Excerpt from my post in "Time to bring Firefly back, this is ridiculous", on 24 August 2006:

Another thing to keep in mind though that "concrete news" is a relative term. Things are always changing in Hollywood. Projects disappear and reappear on the radar all the time. You never know what might prompt renewed interest in projects, or what might shelve a project everyone that was a "go".

Actors also may not always have the latest news themselves... after all, who knows what type of meetings are taking place behind closed doors? Joss is good about keeping people informed, but maybe he plays some things close to the vest for a reason. There's a lot of strategy in the entertainment business and deal making that doesn't end up published in articles.

The most recent word from Joss on the subject of Firefly included a mention of his continued interest in telling more stories from the 'Verse. He also admitted (not a word for word quote, but the gist), that things for Firefly/Serenity are on the sidelines for now... less than hoped for box office returns being the central reason. But Joss is still interested in FF/S, he loves working with the cast, and they love working with each other. But he won't be waging the kind of battle he did to get Serenity made. At this juncture, Joss will have to be the one approached by a studio to make more.

A quote from Joss ~

"As long as I was able to service the characters with integrity and had enough money so that I wasn't hampered, then I would love to return
Serenity to TV. I love that universe; it continues and those characters live on. There could be a series, there could be a miniseries, there could be all sorts of things. I'm not ruling anything out. I'll let it simmer for a while and see if anyone calls."

So, as far as I'm concerned, until Joss makes a definitive statement that he suddenly woke up and realized he never wants to be involved with Firefly/Serenity again, and the thought of working with the cast causes him intense intestinal distress, then I'm gonna keep fighting the good fight.

"Some other little irons in the fire, when they're hot I'll pull 'em out and brand you. Keep the faith, spread the love, take the red pill, smell the coffee, fight the power, do the hustle, mow the lawn, eat the rich, Mott the Hoople, kick the can, bag the toads and If They Move, Kill 'Em. xoxo -j."

Sure... for starters, just check out the info in my signature line. Getting new fans started by giving them the gift of an iTunes Firefly episode is very easy and inexpensive to do.

Also read through my guerilla marketing website, there's lots of ideas to use to promote the 'Verse.

There's also a thread in this discussion board dedicated to brainstorming guerilla marketing ideas... plus the first post contains some ideas:

http://www.fireflyfans.net/thread.asp?b=20&t=23296

Also check out this great website... has lots of great marketing ideas:

http://www.browncoatsriseagain.com

There are more plans in the works to add features to FFF.net to improve the fans' efforts to guerilla market Firefly and Serenity. But the above info provides plenty of ways to get started.

A thought to keep in mind for all fans out there promoting FF/S:

Always keep in mind when promoting FF/S that we want to avoid sounding like scary cult fans who just found a new religion. Be aware of finding that balance. Just keep your genuine enthusiasm for something really cool that you want to share with people you think would appreciate true coolness... and then Firefly/Serenity will do the rest of the talkin'.

Thank you so much for starting this thread, 11th Hour!

Your advice on the best approach is right on the money, imho.

Off to spread the word! (calmly, maturely)

Thanks for sayin', and everything you do helps.

There's excellent reasons to believe in the continuation of the 'Verse:

• Joss wants to do more.
• The cast want to do more.
• The fans are aching to have more.
• The production itself was widely acclaimed.

The ONLY thing missing from the above formula for green lighting a sequel is "Great box office returns". That's it. Just comes down to getting bigger audience numbers... connecting more with main stream audiences. A studio wants to make money. They are not going to say "no" to a profitable franchise. The thing is, Serenity's profits weren't that bad, and the movie has climbed into profit with the DVD sales.

We now have many more fans than when Serenity was released, and the numbers increase every day. As the fan numbers keep growing, the studio will recognize that continuing the 'Verse makes a lot of sense.

We'll just keep spreading the word and turnin' folks on to the coolest show ever.

hehe... yes, mature is fine, and there's nothin' wrong with calm... but it's okay to keep your passion when spreadin' the word. Hmmm... is there such a thing as "calm passion"? Or "mature excitement"?

Only brought up the subject because every now and then there have been mentions in articles about how "some" browncoats have come off as kinda scary. But who knows, maybe those particular folks are scary just ordering a sandwich...

It's about finding a balance. Most times it comes down to being aware of what the person likes and being able to connect that to Firefly. Fortunately, Firefly is such a richly textured show, there really is something for everyone: Action, humor, scary, touching, brilliant... and a very HOT cast... hubba... hubba...

When the cast were originally signed to do Serenity, Universal structured the contracts for a trilogy. It is good to know that it's been set up already, so that when Universal is ready to roll, there won't have to extended legalties while they have to get everyone signed.

Barring some futuristic way to bring Wash and Book back to life, one must assume that their appearances in future movies will be the form of flashbacks... or storylines which cover the time period after "Objects in Space" and before "Serenity".

It'd be so great to have our cast whole again for more of the 'Verse!

VERSEEXPLORER

It is such optimistic news. The other point that Bad2Verse mentioned was that they said the movie DVD sales were in the black. Being profitable is one of the most important things for Universal in order to get more of the 'Verse for us.
