You think you know--what's to come, what you are. You haven't even begun.

So in this thread over here http://www.fireflyfans.net/thread.asp?b=20&t=23573 there was mention of getting some marketing slipped into favorite comics on the web. The biggest comic (that I know of) Penny Arcade has already made a few references. There are several others. I suggest combing buzzcomix and other webcomic lists for the most popular webcomics and seeing if any of them seem likely to make reference or have in the past.
Anyway, I drafted a quick little form e-mail that could be sent to those artists who have mentioned it in the past:

Dear (name),
I'm a big fan of your comic, (name). It's been in my favorites for (pick a period of time) and I think you do excellent work.
I've noticed a few references to Firefly in some of your strips. I myself am a devoted Browncoat and a member of the Browncoat Signal Corps. We would love to see more references to this shiny show, especially as the anniversary of the theatrical release of Serenity approaches. Our hope is to get more and more people interested in a sequel. Anything you could mention on your site or in your comic would be wonderful!
Keep up the great work,
(name)

For those who haven't made any noticable mention... Well, I'm not sure how to approach them. We don't want to seem too overbearing; "Have you heard of this show it's so great and you should plug it for me!" kind of thing. We wanna be nice, and fairly casual, while still getting the point across.
Anyone gets ideas for how to write that out, or even an alternative to what I have above, post it here. Make sure to make mention of appreciating their work.
Okay, so here's the comics I can remember as having made Firefly reference. Any you find, please add:
Penny Arcade
The Devil's Panties
Sam and Fuzzy
Comedity
The Nice Guy
And I know the artist over at Something Positive is a fan, but hasn't made mention basically anywhere. He's been a guest at cons where he got to meet cast members, and has been excited about it, and that's the only way I know.
So whatever you can do, be it sending them e-mails, writing some e-mails for us to use, or finding more candidates, go for it!

Please don't be overly aggressive, and please don't send e-mails that the Signal Corps haven't seen or anything. As 11thHour says on a regular basis, we don't want to come off as crazy and scare people away. That will only hurt our cause. Okay? So let the shininess begin!

CYBERSNARK

Greg Dean, creator of RealLife comics ( http://www.reallifecomics.com/) is a Browncoat.

He even did a Joss Whedon Cameo on the Serenity Premiere: http://www.reallifecomics.com/archive/050922.html, and found out that JOSS READS HIS COMIC ( http://www.reallifecomics.com/archive/050927.html --scroll down to the blog entry)!!

Quote:

Best part of the whole night, though, was actually meeting Joss Whedon. He was just wandering around, doing his best to meet everyone. I got my chance, and asked if he had a public e-mail address that he checked. He said not yet, but he was talking to some people about setting one up. (Hell, I've got a gmail invite. Let's do this.) I say, well okay, all it really was is that I'm an online cartoonist, and today's (thursday's) comic had him in it, and I wanted to send it to him. And even before I finish my sentence, he says "Oh yeah... I saw that!" I about hit the floor. He thanked me for not making him look fat. (I guess people tend to make him seem fat or something - dude is in SHAPE, though. Maybe he's lost weight, but seriously. He's probably skinnier than me.) I told him no offense on the whole buffy/angel thing, and he waved his hand and said "Nah, please. Not everyone's thing." We congratulated him on the movie, and assured him it'd do great. (spoke with quite a few people who had never seen firely, and they all loved the movie.)

Here's the real kicker - while I was talking to Joss, the guy standing right next to us said "Wait, you're the guy who does Real Life?!" Right then and there, my life was given new meaning. :) Nothing beats talking to one of your heros, and have someone recognize you while doing so. Dude, if you're reading this, send me an e-mail. You made my night. :D

I think a lot of webcomic artists are Browncoats.

Tim Buckley is from "Ctrl Alt Del" http://www.ctrlaltdel-online.com/
as you ca see in here: http://www.absath.com/?m=200512

although gotta say one of the best webcomics so far is Crimson Dark. Very Firefly/Battlestar feel to it, yet completly original! http://www.davidcsimon.com/crimsondark/ Great work Dave. Always look forward to a new page

Im just going to work my way through my favourites list and just e-mail every comic author at some point this week.

I need to know exactly what I need to say though, what are we trying to get these guys to do, plug the series, or plug the letter campaign?

Thanks, Keyoke!
Idealy, they would mention the upcoming anniversary and letter campaign, or even post the web address of the Browncoat signal corps. But any mention is shiny. They can do an homage to the show, they can talk about it, they can do anyting they feel like doing that might get people to sit up and take notice.
Remember, these are artists and writers, and aren't going to want to force anything. Anything you can do to personalize it to their comic is great. Walk soft. We don't want to trample them.
If they haven't mentioned Firefly in their comic at any point, write them a letter that focuses on your enjoyment of the strip. Then say something in it along the lines of "I'm a fan of the show, Firefly. I don't know if you've seen it, but given your interests/subject matter/writing style (or whatever you think is relevent), you might enjoy it." Give any sites you think are good for information (but don't overdo it), and let them make their own call. Maybe if they become a new fan they'll mention it somehow in their comic.
Also, those artists who have active news sections or blogs should be at the top of your lists, because they can put a lot of information in something like that.

Im going to start my little e-mailing campaign shortly then. What would be real useful to me is if all you folks who read webcomics would post some adresses for me to visit. I have about ten on my hitlist already.

Not a webcomic, but I just learned that Joss will be taking over "Runaways" a Marvel comic... with issue #25 (?) think he'll slip in a reference?

Sorry for my abscence, im now e-mailing all the webcomics I can find since no-one else seems to have done so in my computer-death days.

Im signing all the e-mails from me, the signal corps and from Fireflyfans.net, since we're all in this together and all.

Plus, if anyone gets angry at me your all coming down with me, mwahah.

Thank you kindly, Keyoke! It's frustrating for me not having e-mail outside yahoo. I can never get them to send right to those addys that pop up in a new window, you know? Can't understand it.

Well... it was only a partial success. Only one out of the twelve comics I e-mailed actually bothered to mention anything.

Bunch of ignorants.
