Likes to mess with stuffs.

Okay, Maureen Ryan, who writes 'The Watcher' column for the Chicago Tribune, has written a sort of counter article to the 'Dollhouse' being sent to the attic one from last week.

In the article, she makes some interesting (and possibly lofty) points about the relevance of the series to many things that are happening within our society today and why people aren't watching.

Included is also an interview with Jed Whedon.

I sit here and wonder if the ratings will end this show before Summer's character even shows up. I was glad to hear that they do take into account people viewing Dollhouse on Hulu. That is what I will have to do this weekend. Have a party I want to go to.

As for the strong female characters. I was a Buffy fan from the start. You can't get much stronger then that. As far as my history with the shows Joss has produced there have always been strong female roles. I have to admit that is not the reason I watch his shows. They simply are great entertainment. So I guess what I am saying is, I agree with the article.

One thing I did after the season premier was to log onto FOX.com and let them know I watch and enjoy Dollhouse. Now it is just keeping my fingers crossed and hoping FOX will give this show a chance.

So thanks Haken for the heads up on this article. I always appreciate it when people find these and share them.

Bleh.

While the article in the initial post makes some interesting points, my feeling is this: I give DOLLHOUSE props for doing something original... Too bad they're not also doing it WELL.

Didn't FOX give the show a change by letting Season One finish out (despite low ratings and lackluster reviews)? And I'd say renewing the show was a second change they didn't have to give it.

The rundown of upcoming episodes is interesting, but I personally don't find it overly compelling. Indeed, the heavy dependence of guest stars and gimmicks seems to smack of desperation.

Still, thanks for posting it, Haken.

I'm really doubting Summer's eps will get aired. Friday is do or die. If they take another ratings hit Fox is gonna Attic It.

The Hulu thing has been mentioned previously. Perhaps not in an interview but at the panel that I attended Joss thanked everyone who watched on Hulu. I like the fact that Networks are taking net viewings into account now.

The article was alright. I understand why she roots for Dollhouse, because that's why I wanted to root for it. However comparing it to Mad Men? I think that's a little insulting to Mad Men, because Mad Men is executed far better.

Also, I know Jed said a problem was that no everyone has watched Epitaph One, and therefore has not seen what is to come. He also said Epitaph One adds a lot of weight to the show now. As someone who saw Epitaph One I don't feel that weight, nor do I feel it's effect on the show itself. If anything, I just wish the show was set during the Epitaph One jump. When I watch the new episodes I just feel an increased sense of boredom and sadness, and then I turn to my Buffy and Firefly DVDs to make the geek inside feel better.

Damn their guest star list is made of win. If only they had material to match.

Your Indian Pirate Lord,
Ash

Zactly. TV ratings derive from a mandate from the masses, not from some farcical notion on what a show SHOULD have been.

Trying to see past what she is, and on to what she can be, it's sure noble as a grape; but at some point the past just really makes her what she is. I'm fair certain we can agree that we all wanted the show to be more; that it had the potential for greatness; that it could have fulfilled that need to grapple with the more difficult issues brought up by Maureen Ryan. Instead, as you so poignantly put it earlier, we got glandularly-induced breastfeeding.

Hello Ash:

I have never seen Mad Men or Epitaph One, so I can't comment on them. It may be that after Buffy and Firefly I am blinded to the flaws in Dollhouse. The desire for another show from Joss is great inside me. I think how I enjoyed Buffy at my age, when the show was obviously aimed at a younger audience and I realize it was talent that went into it that pulled into watching a show I normally would never have a second thought about. A show needs the numbers and how do you get them now? Even if there is improvement, the viewers are gone. There is no one to see it. I'll keep watching it until they turn the lights out.

To play Devil's advocate against myself, I'm fairly certain that the glandularly-induced breastfeeding is set-up for a way that Ballard and Echo will work around the Topher's process... but I really don't CARE, and that's the problem.

DOLLHOUSE is an interesting concept that has failed to meet expectations. There are many talented individuals involved, both onscreen and behind the scenes, but until, say, FIREFLY, the whole is NOT greater than the sum of the parts. Most of the individuals involved are better than the product they're working on, which is why I personally won't be to upset with the potential mothballing of the show. I look forward to the next projects for these talented individuals.
