Saw the episode the other night, Law and Boarders.

Caskett are playing Scrabble, so they claim. He has 312 or 314, something like that. She has 172. She plays quixotic in the top right corner, with 8 point X on the doubled letter score, plus both Q and C on triple word scores, and gets the 50 point bonus for using all her letters.

He only gives her enough points to attain 314 or 316, IIRC. That is only 142 or 144 points.

8 (X) x2 = 16. 10 (Q) + 3 (C) = 13. 16 + 13 + 5 = 34. 34 x 3 (Q) = 102. 102 x 3 (C) = 306.
306 + 50 = 356.
172 + 356 = 528.

Are Castle scriptwriters illiterate Collegegium Gradutamates who cannot add? They even had a Scrabble board right there to refer to. Is this a repetitive thing, not being able to add in the show?

I haven't had a chance to watch it yet, but I doubt they were being literal. It's probably just supposed to be funny that the cop trounced the writer.
BTW, you play scrabble? It one of the only board games I like myself...Wish anyone in my family would play

Have you tried Boggle? Many groups of smart friends I have often devolve into Boggle tournaments. It is faster and more compact, portable than Scrabble. I do like Scrabble, but have little patience for attempts at using foreign words, and it is more difficult to travel. I have several copies, including that golden collectors version.

Regarding being literal - how difficult, really, would it have been to do it correctly - wouldn't it have been far better to have her behind 172-525, and she gets ahead in one move of 356 points?

I finally watched it on DVD.

The score was stated as 312 to 175.

My math for Quixotic still stands.
He gives her 314. This is not a number which is located in any of the calculations.

Even working back from 314. Subtract the 50, for 264. Divide by 3 from one of the Triple Word Scores, for 88. Now dividing by 3 for the other Triple Word Score, it can't be done.

So was this some sort of Code, that Castle Fans had the Decoder Ring for?
