um...thats very, VERY! innacurate. Too many things to go on about... And does seem kind of a rip off for £34....

I'd wait for someone to convert the Lightwave Firefly (Treybor [i think built] it AND has posted tutorials for everyone else to build their own version in Lightwave).

Hope that helps

A rip off? Please tell me where you'll find a tutorial set that covers a ship of this size and lasts around 40 hours for this price.

And as for the innacuracy's it still looks pretty damn good to me - if there's bits you don't like then the guy who made the DVD encourages you to change them - its your model after all he's just showing you his interpretation and giving you the skills you need.

It really is fairly inaccurate judging by the screens. I'd personally suggest getting your modelling skills up to scratch and then working on it yourself. It's much harder to reinterpret a model as you go through a tutorial.

Inaccuracies aside - you didn't answer my question about the value of the set - I don't know about other people here but I'd be interested in where you could buy better value training DVD's so I can improve my skills.

You guys are all talking about computer models aren't you? I'm trying to figure out the best way to create a real life 1m long model as light as possible for my friend to fit a ducted fan system in so that I can have a working 100th scale model of Serenity. Yep, I'm gonna get me a remote controlled Firefly I can fly around the room. How cool is that?!

So, any ideas how I would go about creting the shell?

Well for a start I'm not sure how good value the training DVD's are full stop. What software are you planning to use? Sign up to some communities, hang out at some 3D modelling sites, 3DTotal.com, 3DCafe.com, scifi-meshes.com ect. Pick a project of your own that requires a variety of tchniques and model it. Trust me by simply trying to get a shape half a dozen times with varying techniques before you actually manage it you'll learn a lot.

If you get stuck remember google and your software package help files are your friends. Again joining a community can help, if you get stuck post a question, "how do I... ?"

Work through the tutorials that came with your software, and buy some of the big books. I have 3DS Max fundementals and Bible, Character modelling and a more general book on modelling characters aimed at any 3D package. They all weigh in at around £30 to £40, but where as a video tutorial will teach you how to make Serenity etc a book like the 3DS Max Bible will be something you return to all the time. It costs the same but it's worth so much more.

I already know how to model in Max - I learnt from 3D-Palace. All I'm commenting on is that your saying the DVD's aren't good value for money when it appears you don't own any so can't make that judgement.

Oh believe what you like, waste your money on something that'll teach you to do one thing. Hey if you spend a million pounds on DVD's you might be able to make several different kinds of models, won't that be fun.

What exactly do you think you'll learn from the video tutorial that you won't learn from this:
http://www.lwg3d.org/forums/showthread.php?t=27346

A tutorial on how to build one model is not worth any money. If you get a tutorial that teaches you to model Serenity, you learn to model Serenity, if you learn poly modelling, subdivision modelling, nurbs modelling, spline cages, lofting and so on and where and how to apply them you can make any model.

And actually I have used these sorts of video tutorials before, that's why I haven't wasted my money on any. And guess what I managed to make a 3D model of Serenity far better than the video tutorial one without a video tutorial, so maybe I do have an inkling of what I'm talking about.

But I guess you learnt 3DS Max from 3D-Palace so now you're a l33t 5up4 h4x0r.

Well it's taught me how to model so I'm perfectly happy with the product - I can do each of the things you named in your list and I've never read a single book. I find it easier to learn from the videos and I think that if you're giving advice to someone about modelling then you should give them all the available options instead of disregarding it - who knows, maybe they won't look at video tutorials and be worse off for it.

I never said I was a "l33t 5up4 h4x0r" as you put it, I simply disagreed with your opinion. Nor did I say that you didn't know what you were talking about, and I haven't had to resort to insulting you either.

Aren't you the grown up modeller...yawn

So saying you can't make that judgement isn't saying I don't know what I'm talking about. Go away and waste your money.

If you can do all those things on my list you don't need the tutorial, you need to practice them, which can be done just as well without wasting money on a video tutorial.

Aren't I the grown up modeller? I never made that assertion, I'd say I know more about modelling than you, and that when trying to offer advice you threw what I had to say away with "yeah well you don't know anything about it".

You did start out with the insults, and saying no I didn't nah nah nah nah doesn't change that.

So aren't you the great know it all *yawn*

Yes, and of course 3DBuzz, 3D-Palace and Gnomon all make video tutorials which no one buys because you can't learn modelling properly. Go figure

No they make them because people buy them, largely people who want a 'quick fix' thinking that spending their hard earned will suddenly make them a pro. And no, you can't learn modelling from a video tutorial, you learn modelling by practising.

The Books are infinitly more useful than any tutorial, video or otherwise, since they are on hand to give general guidance about a particular esoteric function. But really how do you know that a video tutorial is more useful than a book if you've never actually read one?

Frankly if you already know all about poly, spline, nurbs and so on then a tutorial in modelling isn't going to teach you much, certainly not worth spending the money on. What you need to do is practice what you do know. What you need to do is make a model on your own without a tutorial because that will teach you to model in a way that suits you, rather than teach you to be really good at copying someone else, which won't help if there's ever a model you want to make that there isn't a tutorial for.

But hey, what would I know right.

THINKR, I apologise that your thread has turned into a slanging match...but here's a summary.

I prefer using video tutorials, citizen prefers books and written tutorials. If you're new to modelling then it's up to you how you want to go - if you want to model firefly then either do it yourself or get that tutorial. Whatever works for you.

Here ends my posting, as I'm actually feeling rather foolish but spending time arguing about two different but valid methods. Citizen I apologise that I've had a go at you, now I'm off to do some modelling.

Isn't what I'm saying. I'm saying that practice is the not only prefered but the only method. And for practice a refrence manual is far more useful than a video tutorial that merely teaches you to copy someone elses work step by step. A refrence manual teaches you the tools and how to use them to solve problems yourself, rather than show you one way of doing one thing. Which is the fundemental difference, the DVD will show you how to make Serenity, a refrence manual will teach you how to do it yourself.

They're not equally valid, one's analogous with learning to freehand sketch, the other's like tracing.

I haven't told you anything any person whose been modelling a long time won't tell you. You can either listen or assume you know best, it's up to you.

But with that, good luck with your modelling.

Nice. I wonder if that model will work in Bryce 5? The lightwave model that is linked to somewhere around here sadly does not.
