I went with my son and his girlfriend this past weekend to see Logan.
I saw the trailer, which gave away some good scenes (I hate how Hollywood promotes most movies/trailers give away too much IMHO), but I must say that Logan was packed with major league wallop, and then some.

To say it was violent would be the understatement of the year, not that that is necessarily a bad thing, it's just that it came this close to spoiling what was otherwise a well-written, well-acted and directed piece of cinema.
Somehow Marvel managed to pull off a gem of an R-rated movie. Okay Shakesspeare could rest easy, but Jackman and company gave us perhaps the best X-Men movie of them all. And the young actress, newcomer Dafne Keen, who played Laura (a wolverine protégé) was excellent in her movie debut. She held her own alongside the likes of Jackman and Stewart (who was also excellent as Professor X).

Even if you're not familiar with the whole X-Men franchise, it's okay to go see this movie as a stand-alone film. It grabs you from start to finish and rarely disappoints. To watch the 3 leads work was a joy to watch, especially Jackman as an older and far grumpier Wolverine. It's set in the future (2024 to be exact) and Logan is working as a glorified Uber driver in Las Vegas, and he's trying to keep a low profile so as not to be put upon. He meets a mysterious lady who proceeds to "put upon" Logan as she recognizes him as Wolverine. Older and seemingly weaker as he slowly deteriorates before our eyes.

She has with her the aforementioned Laura and asks for his help to protect the young mutant. The mission is to get her to North Dakota to a safe haven and that's when the fun begins. Of course we have the obligatory villain who is hired to hunt down Laura by a mysterious and secretive corporation that helped spawn the young mutant. There is, as I said, lots of fun X-Men
violence in all manner of positions and choreographed slam sessions. It is, after all, an X-Men action movie but I found it to be a tad overdone. Nonetheless Jackman, Stewart and Keen were the driving force behind Logan. Their on-screen chemistry and presence was palpable. I dare say that the young Ms. Keen will be up to her pretty little head in scripts from here on out.

I give it 4 out of 5 Stars. Do not miss this, even if you don't get to the theater (which I recommend), catch it on DVD.

Believe me Brenda you will not be disappointed, my little amateur review does not do it justice. This was an excellent vehicle for Jackman and company
(Patrick Stewart and newcomer Dafne Keen are pitch perfect and greatly complimented Jackman's Logan/Wolverine).

But the Old Man Logan story may have been Jackman's idea (I'm guessing here)
because, the role that put this man on the map, is slowly outpacing him. Meaning that Jackman, unlike Wolverine, is getting up there in age and may not be long for greener pastures (as far as his on-screen character is concerned).

Jackman, I dare say, is a truly gifted actor and performer and would do well in just about any role. I read somewhere that he asked Seinfeld when he knew it was time to hang up the character/show and that he shared his secret with Jackman. Basically, like athletes, you want to go out on top before you are asked to leave. Let me tell you Brenda, it is beautifully handled.

Plus I have a theory that Hollywood may have overstayed their welcome in the superhero genre. But that's me.

Now, on a different note, judging from reaction to her appearance in the dreadful Batman vs Superman debacle, I'm going to go out on a limb and say that the new Wonder Woman - the actress and the film - is going to be a major hit. To be honest, the only good thing about B vs S was the cameo of Wonder Woman. But that's for another day.

I am a little ticked off to think that this is an "Old Man Logan" story and not something else from his long and illustrious career as an X-Man.

Unfortunately I was not impressed by Logan. The story just didn't impress me at all. It felt like the movie spent half it's time showing Logan coughing and showing that he's old and weaker than his prime. Yeah yeah we get it. However, when the plot needs him to be in his prime he suddenly shrugs off all the previously established weakness. There was no consistency. The "bad guys" were just contrived and never built up to a level that you cared one lick about them.

I mean the acting in the movie was well done, but when the story is contrived and full of issues it just doesn't matter to me. I do give the young girl props for doing a great job. I always worry about child actors and she was great. Hopefully if she stars in more x-men films they will hire better writers.

Finally saw Logan. For me the biggest draw in the trailers was the girl and she was the best part of the film. Things started off in slow gear for quite a while.
I wondered if she was the next Chloe Grace Morentz, but the cinematography wasn't as clear. Her fight scenes were just a flurry, a blur, and maybe didn't do her justice. But she did a wonderful job on all fronts .
I'm not sure if it was the best X-Men or one of the ten best this year so far. I didn't get the Reavers.

A bit O/T:

One of my favourite Logan scenes doesn't even come from a movie - rather, from Astonishing X-Men: Torn, the comic co-written by our very own Joss:

For Kitty Pryde (Shadowcat) and Peter Rasputin (Colossus), it's the morning after the night before, i.e. they've finally consummated their relationship (to such sizzling effect that Kitty lost control of her phasing powers and fell naked through the ceiling of the students' common room - or is that 'homeroom'?).

They enter the kitchen; Logan's there eating a bowl of cereal.

He looks from one...

...to the other...

...mutters, "'bout time," and returns to his breakfast without further comment. If that ain't classic Logan, I don't know what is!

As for the movie, I loved it. I actually think Logan might've made a good dad: any kids he raised would sure as hell be disciplined and obedient (hell, would you mess with a dad as utterly badass as him?!), but he would also know when to cut them slack; he'd be firm but fair. I think he could've learned to love Laura (Dafne Keen should've had more dialogue, but she was superb - here's hoping we see a lot more of her).

And even with the adamantium poisoning him, I wouldn't bet against his healing power helping him recover even from such severe injuries...

I agree here too. But I think it's harder to portray feelings without dialogue, although it's a bit easier on the big screen than in a play, but she held her own opposite Hugh Jackman and Sir Patrick Stewart. Now that's saying something!

So yeah, I hope she gets more roles, this girl is all kinds of good.

I think Jackman wanted to end his Wolverine career on a good note; it's the role that put him on the map. But I would think that if they ever throw enough money at him (let's say a couple of Brink's trucks) that they could do the flashback thing a la "Days of Future Past." (which was actually well done).
