How long before Mexican Spanish movies or Hindu Street Shitters start to outsell Hollywood movies in North American theatrical releases?
For some reason Hollywood refuses to support indie American film makers

Canada seems done as a film location, for a while it did good providing location for US shows and movies

Hollyweird has crashed, there have been foreign waves that beat Hollywood before, the French, the Japanese Samurai movies, the Italian-American spaghetti Western, HK Kungfu films, then J-horror, Korean tv a return of anime and Chinese films arriving

Then we had 'RRR' a 2022 Indian Telugu-language epic

Big Fx and explosive space effects and CGI but very shallow like a Zack Snyder movie

Bollywood has been around a while and India does have good movies but this one is strange
the Hindu Street Shitters don't always make what people note as 'Art'
even foreign mediocrity with no real story or message can compete against Hollyweird

Look at how good Chuck did it

some online NPC bots are blabbing about Kill Hindi I have not seen many Hindi Indian at Kickboxing, MMA, Judo, UFC, Wrestling, Karate, Boxing...they do the dance thing but for me the martial arts thing is a hard sell and I'm not really buying it in some of their movies, in real life sports they are terrible at winning Gold in the Olympics...screen presence, the stage and movement and stardom?

Arnie had terrible English when he started but he made it part of his thing, I liked some Thai stuff but they did not sell to the English speaking audience, Chuck Norris, Donnie Yen, Bruce Lee, Wesley Snipes, Dolph Lundgren, Ray Park, Randy Couture, Stallone, Toshiro Mifune, Jackie Chan, Van Damme some are real fighters they got in the ring and took hits and others are martial arts stage but they can all sell action that looks ok on screen
nobody will tell you Jack Dempsey can not sell strength and action in old film real like Mr Broadway or Daredevil Jack 1920 they look tough, that guy can throw a punch
Mike Tex Cobb or Mike Tyson are filmed where their physical skills come out and look the real deal. Although 'Charles Bronson' just looked tough a fighter even if he was not a martial arts guy, some of the Actors in epics like Spartacus could sell their role. Burt Lancaster and Paul Newman were very physical guys in their youth even if they were not martial arts guys, in the USA the stars are dying?

Actor Steve Reeves was already a beast and known as a 'Strongman' freakshow. Dwyane the Rock Johson, Dave Bautista and Hulk Hogan were Wrestler monsters but I'm not sure if Hulk Hogan was much as an actor in live action movies it seemed very Wrestlemania like.
Shaquille O'Neal does not need to do much to look big and tough but his skills as an actor are poor, Actors like Russell Crowe is another who just looks tough and mean a New Zealand and Australia actor.
Something also changed in the late 1960s era of film, and early 70s of Hollywood once Bruce Lee arrived you were expected to kick a bit, judo, knees and elbows, a real martial art street fight and an actor had to do more than throw a haymaker punch, the old action heroes of the 1940s could no longer do it in the new era of hand to hand stunts, a lot of it is still carefully timed behind the scenes camera work and choreography and stunt teams.
but I'm not really getting the Hindi Fight thing, some countries have it some actors have it physically but are missing the lines and 'screen presence' Tony Jaa was ok from Thailand but lacked the actor ability never going beyond stunt actor.

To be fair, we really don't release anything decent this early in the year, and the studios seem happy to ride whatever coattails they have left from the final releases of the year before. The 2nd highest grossing movie of 2025 is only $53 Million right now, so all of those other Russian and Spanish movies will be bumped down into the 30's and 40's very quickly in the coming months.

But it is going to be funny watching that Top List in 2025. It won't be until summertime before the US even has a shot to beat that Chinese flick. And if said flick grosses over $1.6 Billion like they're predicting it will, there's a somewhat decent chance that this movie stays at 1st place all year long.

I would disagree with this, in the good years Hollywood often had cult hits at this time of year and would make box office money also, cheap low budget indie films in Jan-Feb but also some Box Office hits

The Lego Movie, Sonic, M3GAN, Spider-Man No Way Home, Aquaman, Rogue One Star Wars, The Book of Eli, LOTR, Scream

the market however has changed, maybe it started crashing in 2015-ish?

also budgets for movies are insane these days

I can't tell because I'm not up on local politics.

Did they have the balls to name real-life enemies and hostile foreign countries in their movie, or did they puss out like the makers of Top Gun II did and just make it some nebulous possibly Russian, possibly Eastern European, possibly army from alternate dimension enemy force?

Don't get me wrong. I liked Top Gun II. But it's hard to really get invested too deeply in a movie that's taking itself more seriously than Starship Troopers, but has the most generic bad guys you could put on the screen.

Top Gun II proves that with the right people involved you can still make a good movie that includes a lot of combat with a generic enemy force, but not too many of them can pull something like that off.

How many Marvel villains do you remember or care about? Outside of Joker, who really cares about any of DC's villains? Lex Luthor is so played out by now but Superman hasn't put out decent flick since I was born and outside of Smallville he's never really gotten a fair shake on the screen. I fucking love Gene Hackman's portrayal of Lex, but most people I know hated it and I can admit objectively why that is. That was Gene Hackman playing Gene Hackman playing Lex Luthor and having a ton of fun with the role.

In my mind, the only real good villain I've seen outside of the Spiderman franchise in the last 15 years was Killgrave from season 1 of Jessica Jones. And to this day I still say that, outside of the Spiderman franchise and the pre-Afflek era Batman franchise, Jessica Jones season 1 is the best piece of Super Hero media that they've put out there.

I'm pretty sure that they did a great job with Thanos too, or else those movies would not have done anywhere near as well as they did. I never saw the last two Avengers movies though, so I can't really speak to it. Everything I heard about the character and his motivations sound like the building blocks for a great adversary.

One of these days maybe I should watch this movie...?

I'm kind of interested in seeing what kinds of lessons that an outfit like "Bollywood" have learned. Not just from Hollywood, but navigating their own culture, pop culture and politics and how that's reflected in their movies.

Is this just a generic action movie to the max, or do they have something to say?

And going in there not knowing much about Indian culture, would I even catch what they were throwing if they did have messaging in there?

I agree with Disparu on this issue. Trump is making a mistake trying to save Hollywood.

I do think it's a funny troll though. After relentless attacks from idiot actors and other idiots out of Hollywood, Trump is the guy trying to save their collective asses.

AMC works really hard to make going to the movies terrible

By Colette Bennett | July 1, 2025

https://www.thestreet.com/entertainment/amc-works-really-hard-to-make-
going-to-the-movies-terrible

As streaming media has exploded in popularity over the past few decades, fewer and fewer people have seen the point of getting into the car and going to the movie theater.

Despite being a beloved activity that people have adored for well over a hundred years, going to the movies really isn't what it used to be.

Add up the price of a ticket or two, overpriced concessions, the cost of driving to and from the theater — not to mention the high possibility of loud groups of kids who don't mind talking over the entire movie — and it's just not appealing.

The pandemic hit movie theaters hard, and although America has recovered, the movie theater industry hasn't.

Typically it made between 10 and 11 billion a year before 2020, but since then, it hasn't exceeded more than 8 billion, per data from Box Office Mojo.

One way theaters coped with getting people back in theater seats was to entice them with limited-edition merchandise like themed popcorn buckets, which actually did wonders for their bottom line. AMC alone raked in $65 million from sales of this merchandise.

Now AMC has a new idea to change the theater experience. But unlike its innovative collectible popcorn buckets, this will actually add yet another reason to justify staying home on the couch with Netflix.

Your movie date just got longer

We all go to the movies expecting to see trailers before the show starts, and some people even like it that way, knowing if they're running a bit late, they won't miss the main event.

AMC has decided this is a good thing, and as of July 1, will now show more pre-movie ads than ever, including "as much as" a whopping five minutes of commercials, as well as a new ad called a "Platinum Spot" that will play before the last few movie trailers you see.

Trailers and other promotions can mean the movie doesn't start for 25-30 minutes, according to the AMC website.

The advertising decision comes as the result of an agreement AMC made with the National CineMedia ad network, which is the largest of its kind in the U.S.

Back in 2019, AMC declined using these ads, despite the fact other chains such as Regal adopted them, saying it believed that moviegoers would react "quite negatively" to them.

But it has since pivoted, saying in a June Bloomberg interview, “While AMC was initially reluctant to bring this to our theaters, our competitors have fully participated for more than five years without any direct impact to their attendance."

Why AMC is making this move

AMC has had its share of struggles over the past few years. While it's been slowly recovering since the pandemic, 2024 didn't pan out so well, with AMC reporting a decline in revenue in 2024's Q3 and an attendance decline.

AMC also announced on July 1 that it had entered into a new agreement with its creditors, which will provide $223 million of new money financing that will be used to refinance its debt.

The agreement will also allow AMC to equitize at least $143 million of its current debt, and has the potential to allow the company to equitize as much at $337 million.

Commenters on social media did not take well to the news of the new ads.

"I would like to warn AMC to expect 25-30 years of me never coming back to their theaters," said X user TexasPharmD.

"Just another reason to avoid the movies," X user Laz252 said.

"Stop. I like how they want more people to watch movies, but they're also still making the experience worse," X user 360 No One said.
