I am currently watching Age of Uprising.

Although fictionalized, Braveheart was based on the real William Wallace.
Secretariat
Thin Blue Line
Schindler's List
JFK
Not sure how accurate Black Dahlia was
Apollo 13
The Imitation Game
Although stylized, The 300 did seem an accurate depiction.
We Were Soldiers
Blackhawk Down
13 Hours
Silkwood
Miracle
Patton
I don't recall if Memoirs of a Geisha was actual, or fictionalized.
United 93
Tucker
Sully

I liked "Schindler's List", "Silkwood", "Black Hawk Down", and "Braveheart" as well as "Apollo 13".

Anything else I will have to have a think on.

Although all based upon Ed Gein, I don't think Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Friday The 13th, Halloween, Manhunter/Silence of the Lambs were intended to be accurate. Seems the most faithful was Psycho, which was pretty good.

Some fairly good films are derived from various parts of the different autobiographies of Whitley Streiber. Close Encounters, Fire From the Sky, Communion, were liked by many. But Phenomenon was likely my favorite.

I really must include The Entity, one of the scariest of this category.

I recall that some films have been based on real-life exorcisms, but don't recall if The Exorcist was one of them. If so, it was pretty eye-opening.

Fargo.

I know the "True" disclaimer for the TV show is bullshit, but wasn't the movie actually based on real life events?

Good call. Yes it was, although some claim not. They occurred in late 1987 or 1988.

Saving Private Ryan? Behind Enemy Lines? Which of those characters were actual people?
Ghost and the Darkness seems much more fictionalized that I had in mind.

Good call on Casino and League of Their Own.

Since My Blue Heaven was released first, wouldn't Goodfellas be the prequel?

But my absolute favorite is To Hell and Back about the WWII US soldier Audie Murphy...starring Audie Murphy!

One I didn’t see listed is Gettysburg.
But I’m a little biased since I got to see it with a bunch of reenactors at a special screening.
That was a fun night.

Well you have to wonder how "true" any hollywood depiction of stories actually are.

Yes. Goodfellas would be the prequel.

I didn't know that until my brother was telling me about it the other day.

Henry Hill. Hank Hill?

Was King of the Hill the sequel to My Blue Heaven?

I remember "Stand and Deliver". Edward James Olmos and Lou Diamond Phillips.

My mom loved "La Bamba" and it was a good film too.

Had a teacher in history class that showed "Full Metal Jacket" that was when I was in High School. Didn't know Adam from a hole in the wall. Not keen on the film.

Thanks for the info help Moose.
The Saving film was about as much based on Niland as the Sullivan brothers. There was no massive search for Niland. Ryan never returned home or to the Rear Echelon before the end of the film battle, the whole film was about searching for him.
Behind was no more based upon O'Grady than the thousands of other Pilots shot down - what the S&R Teams were created for.

These 2 have as much to do with the topic as the great Jake & Rose story which Cameron didn't even attempt to display the actual cause of the Titanic's sinking - although his film was the first opportunity to show the known and confirmed cause.
Including them would be like including Forrest Gump.

Also, I keep holding back on Rocky Blier Story and Brian's Song.
But Brian's Song was really good. And 42 seemed pretty accurate.

If not for bafflack, Argo could be on my list.

But Munich should not have slipped my mind this long.

Next month is Chappaquiddick, but other than Kate Mara I'm not sure the cast can raise it above the despicable event.

I don't recall if The Help was actual or not.

Hidden Figures was quite good, but the only decent authority figure was the fictional character.

They weren't at this level for me, but did nobody like Free State of Jones, or 12 Years A Slave? Rob Roy? Alexander? Gallipoli? Papillon or The Great Escape?

Although the story is certainly hard to verify, Troy seemed to be faithful to the tales handed down from the ancients, and the dig site of that incarnation of the City seems to confirm portions of the tale.
Similarly King Arthur seemed to me the most faithful version to history (King Otha), so far. As more about him is unearthed, better versions might be forthcoming.

The USS Indianapolis is hard to watch.

Although not very accurate, U-571 was apparently loosely based upon Operation Primrose, HMS Bulldog taking U-110. Some of the inaccuracies may have been due to the sensitive Secrets, and lack of full declassification by the time the film was made.

Band of Brothers was based on actual events, with the usual Hollywood fictionalization.
But probably more accurate than most movies or shows.

Here’s a great documentary about the unit, it expands on the short interview clips that appear in the series.

I never got the same feel for Rob Roy, any of the times I've seen it. Maybe the foreign language was too much obstacle.

That reminds me of the TV show Little Big Shots. Couple days ago they had like a 6-year-old Scottish kid. He was doing Irish Dancing. During the pre-show interview and background, EVERY SINGLE WORD the kid said had a subscript translation to American English. At first I thought it a pun. But during the show interview, sometimes the only translation available was from the mom.

"A Year of Living Dangerously" was based on a true story too. The man that Linda Hunt played managed I think to get out of Cambodia and I think died in the last year in the US. I might be wrong.

For Crime genre, Portrait of a Serial Killer seemed fairly faithful telling of Henry Lee Lucas, and Otis Tuttle.

Regarding drugs and brain chemicals, Lucas was found to have a brain chemistry with Lithium levels so high they are considered lethal levels in humans. Supposedly due to his mom whacking him with a 2x4 as a child, leaving him sitting at n a corner comatose for several days.

I've heard some interesting marketing for Chappaquiddick, which opens today.

I've heard some Talk Show hosts speak about it, simulating a story, for the last few days. Sounds like they got an early screening.
I can recall Mark Levin, Sean Hannity with these spots the last few days, and not during their show periods.

Just watched The Girl Next Door (2007), with Catherine Mary Stewart and William Atherton. Based on Sylvie Likens in Indiana in 1965, which the film An American Crime also is based upon.

TGND is set in 1958 for the real events, instead of actual 1965. This is about child torture, child abuse, child rape, starvation, child genital torture and mutilation, child Murder.

Commentary helps explain why the director did not add glitz or glam to any aspect of either side.

I've seen it referred to as Real World Horror. Take a break between this and your next fix of Chainsaw Massacre or Hostel.

When I started this thread, my mind was leaning towards inspirational events. This ain't that.

Hard pass on that one. I don't know why anybody would want to watch a movie like that, let alone why anybody would create it in the first place.

Then again, I've never seen a Saw movie, and have zero interest in anything resembling them. It's bad enough that fake movies about human torture are so popular. People are sick.

The creative team for TGND had spent 9 years trying to get it made, with many false starts. The author of the book just passed in Jan 2018. An American Crime was released a few months apart in 2007, based upon the court transcripts of the same events.
Since Saw (2004) and Hostel (2005) had shown the draw for Fake torture-porn, filming a non-fake story likely seemed a reasonable idea.

The "creative team", huh? I think that's a bit generous.

I find myself grateful that I live in a country that allows movies like this to be made and shown to the public, but at the same time very disappointed that enough people go to see them that they keep being made.

I can only imagine what watching movies like this do to a person that is hopped up on a prescribed dose of whatever poison their drug dealers in white labcoats addled their brains with.

Yep. Required reading back in 1995. Why do I doubt that it still is today?

My brother knew I liked the book and somehow was able to buy the exact same hardcover edition that we read in High School for my birthday one year. I've always meant to get around to re-reading that for the first time since I was 15 years old. I wonder how much different it will be to me 23 years later.

Suspect Zero. Although the exact events of the story are not likely based upon actual events, the whole basis and practice of the portrayed procedure are based on actual practices, which most viewers are likely to not believe. The Bonus Material on the DVD includes the excellent Demonstration for the Director, staged for him to better understand how to film the process.

Patch Adams.
Awakenings.
The Rookie, Dennis Quaid.
The Rookie, Nathan Fillion. His love interest is reportedly Melissa O'Neil, another Canadian. His Sergeant is apparently played by Richard T Jones (Terminator: TSCC) and I itch to hear those 2 sharing stories about Summer.

Hacksaw Ridge.
Walking Tall, Joe Don Baker
Brubaker. The first role I recall Morgan Freeman in.
Belle. This the the best role I've seen Gu Gu in so far, with Cloverfield not out yet.

The original was much more faithful to the biography. The remake was, at best, loosely based.
