Take one part 10 Cloverfield Lane, and one part Signs, and one part War of the Worlds; mix generously, add a bit of silence and you get a wonderfully taut, suspenseful sci-fi/thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat.

A Quiet Place's premise is depicted smartly in it's trailers....a young family must remain quiet due to an alien invasion of creatures that attack whenever they hear a loud sound. It stars the husband and wife team of Emily Blunt and John Krasinski, on a screenplay co-written by Krasinski, Bryan Woods and Scott Beck. It is, as I stated above, a smart taut and scary movie that combines some of the elements of the above mentioned movies, with a twist....it is mostly a silent movie.

The family communicates through sign language, and the soundtrack provides the tension, as well as the action of the aliens, which are cleverly hidden throughout the movie. With a running time of 95 minutes, and a budget of just $21M, this film flies in the face of giant tent-pole blockbusters with their multi-multi million dollar budgets. But don't be fooled, this is a smart, well timed and well paced movie. And nary a frame goes to waste in this thriller. So much so, that Krasinski and company have been offered an unnamed sci-fi assignment. The movies that I compare this thriller to are good, but the suspenseful and tightly written "monster" movie far surpasses it's predecessors and you leave the theater wanting more.

What I found surprising was that it was as emotionally charged as it was scary. I really enjoyed myself watching this family survive the onslaught of these savage aliens. You are dropped point blank, right smack dab in the middle of the story as if you're experiencing the catastrophe along with them. We don't even get properly introduced to the members of the family, which I thought clever and added to the suspense. It gave off a feeling of "you are there" and you realize the terror of the invasion. Again much like Cloverfield Lane, little information was given as to how, why or when the aliens landed. The only bit of information is a reference to the numbers of days since their landing. Nothing else is known, other than they track their prey by sound. And you are there with nothing more than that going for you. Absolutely brilliant premise and set up.

Both Krasinski and Blunt are spot on as the mother and father who are desperately trying to protect their kids. Which brings me to them, the kids that is, they - Millicent Simmonds and Noah Jupe - are magnificent. Whoever these kids are, you will be hearing from them. One of them has a special gift, that I will reveal shortly, but trust me, it is truly remarkable how these unknown actors bring their skills to the forefront. I really liked this movie a lot. I am going to dub it one of the Top Ten of the Year 2018. Go see for yourself, you'll most likely agree.

I did a little digging and found out that actress Millicent Simmonds was also cast in the film Wonderstruck. The skill she has is that she's deaf, due to an accidental medication overdose.

She was nominated for several awards for best youth performance. She is very good in A Quiet Place.

This sounds like my kind of movie. I won't be watching any potential spoilers about it.

This is probably what the Tremors sequels could have been if the first one didn't already set the tongue in cheek tone and the sequels had more than a budget for a Happy Meal.

Man... I could watch Tremors once a year. That was such a great flick.

I still had a facet of Pitch Black in the vibe. But more of Signs.
I was looking forward to this, and was not disappointed.

I'm not sure if I should start a discussion thread, with spoilers.

SPOILERS!!

I was irritated the guy dropped his weapon instead of taking a piece with him.

It seemed clear the reason they survived the first 88 days was because of the daughter, so they already knew sign language.

There were still some irritating issues, so maybe we just shouldn't think too much.

I had just watched Wind River again the night before, with Cory's explanation to Jane about not letting them out of sight, not for an instant.

So her guilt about not ensuring guardianship for Beau had even more resonance that many viewers likely had.

One thing about watching a mostly quiet film: you heard EVERYBODY'S Mobile Telephone, from every row in the theater.

I got nothing, no vibe about Pitch Black. But I did, however, get a Signs vibe.

As the story unfolded, we got that the daughter was born deaf, and that the father was looking for a remedy. I assumed he was some sort of scientist or teacher. And yeah, the family learned sign language to communicate with the girl.

I didn't find anything irritating at all. This was a well written and well directed horror/sci-fi thriller in the line of War of the Worlds. Very suspenseful, well choreographed and familiar without being very cliché. I put it right up there with 10 Cloverfield Lane and the aforementioned War of the Worlds.

The key was that they had all already learned sign language, before the Aliens. That gave them the advantage over the rest of the population, which seem to be mostly dead.

Also, anybody with allergies, coughing or sneezing ailments are gone. I couldn't tell which son needed the meds, or what they were for.

Apparently the Aliens had highly directional hearing for loud noises from long distances, then when near their prey they either continued to use passive sound to detect noises such as heartbeats or breathing, or else used active sound, emitting a single or variable frequency to get bounceback, like SONAR, RADAR, LIDAR. They would need to be effectively stopped (motionless) at this point if the sound source had gone quiet - they would have made too much noise in transit to hear the quieter sounds above their noise. Once dad had stopped on the train bridge, it had not found him. It seemed weird that the Shuttle had survived.
They didn't seem to be bothered, or attack electrical power, which would be 60Hz, a hum. What was used didn't look like DC power was feasible. Heartbeat and respiration would be 1Hz - 3Hz. Human sound detection is about 20Hz - 20,000Hz.
How any wildlife critters had survived for over a year is a mystery.

Their satisfaction of the baby's gender seemed to suggest their intention, having conceived a month after we first meet them.

How the heck did that slow ass truck make that distance? A year of immobility must have generated squeaks and squeals galore.

She would return at night saying she danced with penguins, and he would share that he killed a kid today.

Mary Poppins out about 10 months after Quiet Place.

There is a sequel to A Quiet Place being written as we speak. It's due out in May 2020, according to Business Insider.

Finally got around to watching this but I couldn't suspend disbelief enough to appreciate the movie. The monsters just had too big of a weakness for me to believe they were a threat at all.

I mean they run full speed at any noise. That's about the easiest thing to trap/kill that I can think of. There's no way humanity would be wiped out by something that basic. They really needed to develop the monsters more IMO. Give them some intelligence that would make them more believable IMO.

I appreciate the so-called weakness within the monster culture - you know, the one thing that saves our hero - but I'm not too certain that we can't find that in the majority of monster/sci-fi flicks.

In Aliens - perhaps the most beloved modern sci-fi flick in recent film history - why doesn't the Mother Bug kill Ripley during their final battle.
I mean she could have easily stabbed Ripley with her tail...right through
the open area of the loading dock loader frame. Obviously it was written into the script that Ellen is to survive, come on she's the hero.

What was it in Independence Day - a computer virus!?

The Walking Dead - they walk after you, so run away. (One of the reasons why I'm not a big fan. I'm not into zombies, well, these zombies.

I could go on, but I can see why some wouldn't necessarily get excited about the premise of the movie. For me, Signs was more about the suspense of the unknown. Once I saw the monsters, well I was not impressed. Same thing for
I Am Legend. Total disappointment.

There were some minor flaws in Predator, but it continues to be one of my top sci-fi flicks. Still, I really did appreciate the film's approach and execution. Not only that, Krasinski found an audience, A Quiet Place 2 is being written as we speak.

My question to you is: How would you have overcome that flaw? How would you solve the problem of savage aliens eating the locals?

Throw a radio into the grand canyon? If they survive the fall and climb out how about tape a cell phone to a live grenade? Pull the pin, throw, call the phone.

Surely the government could put some hire yield explosives to use in the same manner.

A grenade would work?
Their Armored bodies made them bulletproof. Was there evidence that a grenade on their outer Armor would injure them?

If they were able to negotiate dense wood at lightning speed without bumping into steel bridge structure, methinks they could avoid Canyon environs incompatible with their viability.

Your answers seem substandard.
