Lionsgate’s Losing Streak: What’s Behind the Studio’s Seven Consecutive Box Office Flops

https://variety.com/2024/film/news/lionsgate-box-office-flops-borderla
nds-megalopolis-1236187749
/

Lionsgate’s genre-spanning 2024 slate of heist comedies, weepy coming-of-age tales, cheeky video game adaptations and horror stories was aiming to fill a void. Most of these were the kinds of movies that major Hollywood studios have either stopped making entirely or largely relegated to streaming services.

And yet, instead of packing seats at multiplexes due to pent-up demand, everything from director Eli Roth’s irreverent console-to-screen adventure “Borderlands” ($32 million globally), the “Crow” reboot ($23.7 million) and historical crime drama “1992” ($2.9 million) to Halle Berry’s post-apocalyptic horror story “Never Let Go” ($16.2 million), Dave Bautista-led action-comedy “The Killer’s Game” ($5.9 million), Francis Ford Coppola’s sci-fi epic “Megalopolis” ($11.2 million) and “Wonder” prequel “White Bird” ($6.8 million) has sputtered at the box office. That’s a string of seven consecutive flops — each with paltry single-digit debuts — in the nine weeks between early August and mid-October.

“It was a pretty diverse slate and certainly wasn’t cannibalization of films,” says Matthew Harrigan, a senior analyst at Benchmark Co. “It was more that nothing really worked.”

Lionsgate tends to keep budgets in check and sells foreign rights to its theatrical titles, which helps recoup losses for underperforming movies. In the case of “Megalopolis,” Coppola fronted the $120 million production costs and other fees. So, as a distributor for hire, the studio will actually make money despite the film’s poor box office showing. The $100 million-budgeted “Borderlands,” a rare big-budget tentpole for Lionsgate, is expected to result in a $30 million write-down. Yet for the most part, none of the studio’s misses is damaging enough to force heads in the C-suite to roll.

“Lionsgate does a good job at mitigating risk on their releases. Nonetheless, you can’t hedge that bad of a run,” Harrigan says. “The cumulative loss from mid-budget films can be as bad as a tentpole.”

The downturn is striking when compared with the studio’s streak last year of “John Wick: Chapter 4” ($440 million worldwide), “Saw X” ($111 million) and “The Hunger Games” prequel “The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes” ($348 million). Those films, as well as most of 2024’s lineup, were greenlit by then-motion picture group chair Joe Drake, who was replaced by Adam Fogelson in January.

Industry experts commend Lionsgate for catering to underserved demographics, such as faith-based crowds and Black audiences. Low-budget Christian drama “Unsung Hero” powered to $21 million in August, while horror satire “The Blackening” amassed $18 million in 2022 and justified a sequel.

“Part of their strategy is filling the gaps. Strategically it’s a smart thing to do,” says Jason Squire, professor emeritus of USC School of Cinematic Arts. “But this is the ancient struggle of the movie business: You just don’t know if audiences will show up.”

Wall Street has been skeptical of Lionsgate’s ability to compete in a media business dominated by tech giants and studios that exist within sprawling conglomerates. Shares are trading at $7.84, falling more than 30% from the prior year. Lionsgate Studios is spinning off from the premium cable network Starz, to cleanly separate the two businesses and pave the way for potential M&A deals.

Upcoming releases like King of Pop biopic “Michael,” Ana de Armas-led “John Wick” spinoff “Ballerina,” another “Hunger Games” prequel and “Now You See Me 3” could spark a rebound in fortunes in 2025 and beyond. And Lionsgate is turning to its vast library to expand the life of movies beyond the screen, with planned stage adaptations of “La La Land,” “Dirty Dancing” and “The Hunger Games.”

Lionsgate is far from the only studio that’s endured challenges in 2024 — just ask Warner Bros., Universal or Apple, which fielded expensive misfires like “Joker: Folie à Deux,” “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga,” “The Fall Guy,” “Argylle” and “Fly Me to the Moon.” As a whole, the domestic box office is struggling, with revenues down more than 11% from the same point in 2023.

“It’s not unique to Lionsgate to be in this challenging economic time,” says Squire. “But they don’t have the ‘magic’ that big studios have in terms of shifting dollars around and being protected from major losses.”

No. It is not a smart thing to do at all, strategically.

It's why Lionsgate has a 7-flop chain right now.

The outdoor drive-in movie theater business is going extinct for obvious reasons. The indoor movie theater industry is following the same path. Former movie ticket purchasers are now seeing movies for free from the comfort of home.

Back in the 1950's at their peak, there were over 4000 drive-in theaters operating in the United States. Currently, there are about 330 Drive-in Movie Theaters still operating in the United States. There are many more that are permanently closed but still remain standing and could potentially be re-opened at some point in the future. In fact, there have been several drive-in theaters that have been re-opened the past couple of years after sitting dark for 20 and even 30 years. We list all open drive-in theaters in the United States and have also listed those that have closed in the past 20 years. To search for drive-ins in a specific state, click on the state above and all the drive-in theaters in that state will be listed. To search for drive-ins in another country, return to the main search page.

The Hollywood Reporter has its explanation for why ticket sales are down:
Quote:

“You get to a point where you’re living in your beautiful house in the hills, you’re meeting only other wealthy people and you’re not connecting to the audience,” adds Galloway. “And the moviegoing audience is primarily young, so at a certain point you become really detached from them.”

Which explains why so much of what Hollywood is producing these days feels so familiar. For instance, there are currently remakes or sequels in development for ’80s classics like An Officer and a Gentleman, Ghost and Dirty Dancing — projects that have little or no emotional resonance to anyone under 50. Obviously, remakes have long been a studio staple. But a War of the Roses redo? A new Running Man offering? It’s unclear whether these nostalgia plays will be all that appealing even to people over 50.

Personally, Hollywood has always made crap, but the big difference today is that you don't have to pay $20 for popcorn, drinks and a ticket when the same crap is available on your home TV for free.

An alternate explanation:
Quote:

So, how did Hollywood die?

This shouldn’t have happened. But the fear, the love-of-money-above-all-else, and the abandonment of that singular goal of making outstanding art, no matter the emotional or financial cost, caused the whole magic web of scaffolding to fall.

When you have something this special, you should know better. You should know to protect it, to support the structures that make it possible for it to breathe and exhale beautiful pieces of filmed movement that change people’s lives.

These are pretty words to describe Hollywood's death: "the abandonment of that singular goal of making outstanding art, no matter the emotional or financial cost, caused the whole magic web of scaffolding to fall." The truth isn't pretty: "Why in hell pay to see a movie in the theater when you can see it for free at home?"

So many great directors of the past seem to no longer have it for whatever reason
Robert Zemeckis you expect comedy, action, maybe a fun active kids animation with CGI but 'Here' is something else...

it seems to be the wrong type of film, Robert Zemeckis is expected to bring fun comedy or action fast paced moving scenes or maybe both, but now it sounds like something for an arty modern art theatre show or arthouse yoko ono show...he does or did experiment, he is know for early use of computer graphics when Hollywood tried to ban it and ban movies like 'Tron' from getting Awards so there is that visual pushing the envelope CGI element to his work people might look for.

Robert Zemeckis is he done, over? he started with comedy 'I Wanna Hold Your Hand' maybe even a culture comment on "Beatlemania" for the group's fanatics, then a War Comedy '1941' the plot is loosely based on what has come to be known as the Great Battle of Los Angeles or Los Angeles Air Raid of 1942 with a little War of the World paranoia, race conflict Zoot Suit Riots brawl at a jazz dance bar joint internment camps and wacky Hollywood comedy, another hit Romancing the Stone following a romance novelist a femake writer who must leave NYC to Colombia's South American jungle in order to save and rescue a damsel from criminals.

Hollywood is afraid of itself and won't experiment much on a 'risky' idea? other critics will say it does not entertain and the movie wasn’t good
a self fulfilling prophecy with people telling him it wasn’t marketable and wouldn’t make money also people want certain style of escapism, story and entertainment and are not going to spend their time and money on just any movie now

Here 2024 American drama film its like trying to watch 3 snapchat tikkytok clips on 3 different phones at the same time or watch 3 tv sets at the same time? story triple jumps a non-linear fashion, screen is often sub-divided into multiple panes, presenting events from different time periods simultaneously. They say it had difficult getting backers, Hollywood would not support or advertise and the movie was largely financed by foreign sales

Robert Zemeckis was a big film maker for a while Back to the Future trilogy, The Polar Express and the live-action/animated comedy Who Framed Roger Rabbit ...but...

Yeah.

https://www.the-numbers.com/box-office-records/worldwide/all-movies/cu
mulative/released-in-2024

Up until about a month or two ago I thought for sure Joker 2 was going to make half a billion even if it was terrible and knock the 3 Chinese movies down to 8th, 9th, and 10th place at least.

Unfortunately, Beetlejuice x2 fell just shy of what it needed to make to displace any of them. It still needs $18 Million to take 9th place from Pegasus 2, and unless Bruce finds a whole lot of money in the international cushions, that's probably not going to happen.

So what else does Hollywood have?

https://www.the-numbers.com/movies/release-schedule

You see any movies in there you think can break half a billion?

Gladiator 2?
Wicked?
Moana 2?
Kraven the Hunter?
Mufasa: The Lion King?
Sonic the Hedgehog 3?
Nosferatu?

Whatever the hell "The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim" is?

The only one I'd say for sure should do it is Moana 2. Other than that, I'll give it to Mufasa as well. Disney has only put out two movies this year and they both made well over a Billion. I think people liked Moana. I know people loved The Lion King, and I count myself among them. If they stripped the woke shit out of these two cartoons, I could see them easily crossing half a billion and making quite a bit more on top of that.

I don't think Sonic 3 would do it. I dunno. Maybe pre-covid it would have.

Wicked and/or Gladiator 2 might, but I know they're both woke trash that I'm never going to watch.

Very unlikely that a movie named Nosferatu would ever crack half a billion.

I'm guessing the numbers for Kraven the Hunter makes Sony decide to end the non-Spider-Man Spider-Man movie experiment once and for all. At least we should all get a good laugh out of that one.

With that short list of "blockbusters" still yet to come out, there's pretty much no way out of having at least 2 Chinese movies on that list at the end of the year.

That's really not the end of the world though. I was under the mistaken impression until some time earlier this year that the Chinese never had a Top 10 movie on the list at the end of the year until now. But when I was doing research on something unrelated I discovered that seeing a Chinese movie on that list over the last 10 or 12 years at least isn't super out of the ordinary.

I don't think it should be happening for any reason, but I if Hollywood starts making better financial decisions going forward I think it could easily take back the Top 10 for many years to come. That should happen because all the free money and venture capital dried up. We've seen the shift taking place. I'm hopeful for the future.

I wouldn't write off Kraven the Hunter yet, its got Japanese involved and as Hollywood stumbled they have got very good at the whole tv, movie, anime, cinema thing, they have US brands Ghostbusters, Men In Black but the really got things going with other brands. Japan studios often double up as Video Game studios and the gaming entertainment they have good profit.

Sony - Spider-Man No Way Home ...one of the few movies that made money with this Covid pandemic era stuff happening
Godzillia minus one was one of their most profitable movies
the new Venom is doing far better than expected
they seem to advertise well overseas, no tranny DEI SJW stuff in their ads just fun entertainment by a Japan studio
Kraven is getting feedback as extreme 'gore' all it needs is people complaining in an interesting way and controversy and shock can sell and generate its own publicity.
They own Bond that 007 brand, Angry Birds, Hotel Transylvania, 'The Da Vinci Code'.
'It Ends With Us' another hit.

Do you wish to see the comic book that inspired the movie “Here”? Free download:
https://getcomics.org/other-comics/here-2014-1989/

The comic book convinced Hollywood to make this movie. What is in the comic?

There is no plot and no story to “Here” the comic book. The comic book sets up a camera at one location, pointing in one direction, and records everything that happens over 3 billion years. The comic book, and probably the movie, is the highlights, presented in no particular order, jumping back and forth across time. There are dinosaurs. There are meteors killing the dinosaurs. There is the American Revolution, at least what can be seen from where the house was built, but before it was built. There are dull house parties. Thank God these people are dead, but there are scenes from thousands of years in the future when the house is part of a museum exhibit. If the movie is at all similar to the comic book, it is a dull museum exhibit. A snooze-fest. Hollywood should never make another such movie.

You know what the best thing about comics compared to movies? You can move through the pages as fast as you want. You are not locked into the speed that the director, Robert Zemeckis, thinks is appropriate for his 3 billion year long epic. I stopped going to theaters because there is no fast forward button to fast pass through the dull parts. Who wants to spend 90 seconds watching the logos of production companies at the beginning of a movie? Or the credits at the end? You can leave before the credits complete or you can just avoid the whole experience by watching a copy at home where you do have a fast forward button.

Warner Bros. “Must Deliver More Consistency,” CEO David Zaslav Says After ‘Joker: Folie à Deux’ Flop

"Even in an industry of hits and misses, we must acknowledge that our studios business must deliver more consistency,” the studio chief told analysts during an analyst call.

“For the past two years, we’ve been driving changes within our motion picture studio to improve green light governance and franchise management, which remain focal points going forward. This is a business where translating operational changes into results takes time, but I believe we’ll see those strategic shifts deliver improved outcomes in the coming years,” Zaslav said.

Hindsight is 20/20 but Zaslav realized that foresight can detect movie ideas/themes that will never be successful and should not be green lighted. A Joker musical sung off-key? Joker dies before meeting Batman? That is certain to fail.

Oh... That's a LOTR cartoon, huh? Yeah. That wont' make much.

You might be on to something there, but I'm still firm on Kraven until proven otherwise. I haven't been a comic book guy for decades, but I don't even have any clue who Kraven is. I'd guess that 95% of the people in America don't know who the hell Kraven is.

People are just burnt out on comic book movies anyhow, and none of these no-name characters have done well at all, particularly for Sony. Madame Web was a hilarious flop that even Sony didn't feel was worth doing reshoots, so they just did a ton of bad dubbing and people saying stuff when their mouths are moving. Fuck Sony for that. Everyone knows that the studios only care about the bottom line at the end of the day, but they didn't even try on that one.

Morbious was at least a character I knew. That didn't go well. Wasn't there another non-Spider-Man Spider-Man movie in between the two of them too?

I give this somewhere around Shazam II and Blue Beetle numbers from last year. Maybe in the area of $120 to $150 Million worldwide.

Joker 2 Co-Star Unloads On Joaquin Phoenix Sequel, And Has A Good Theory On Why It Flopped

https://www.cinemablend.com/movies/joker-2-star-tim-dillon-unloads-on-
joaquin-phoenix-sequel-lady-gaga-todd-phillips-dc

"It’s the worst film that has ever been made. It’s actually not ‘so bad.’ It’s the worst film ever made. I think what happened, after the first Joker, there was a lot of talk like, ‘Oh, this was loved by incels. This was loved by the wrong kinds of people. This sent the wrong kind of message. Male rage! Nihilism!’ All these think pieces. And then I think, ‘What if we went the other way,’ and now they have Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga tap dancing, to a point where it’s insane."

"It has no plot. We would sit there, me and these other guys were all dressed in these security outfits because we’re working at the Arkham Asylum, and I would turn to one of them, and we’d hear this crap, and I’d go, ‘What the fuck is this?’ And they’d go, ‘This is going to bomb, man.’ I go, ‘This is the worst thing I’ve ever…’ We were talking about it at lunch, and we’d go, ‘What is the plot? Is there a plot? I don’t know, I think he falls in love with her in the prison?’"

Joker 2 kept audiences guessing about its true intent until the very last shot. And as I wrote, I disliked what the finale said about Arthur Fleck’s journey, mainly because I thought that it negated the impact of the first movie. Why would anyone go back and rewatch two movies about a guy who doesn’t eventually become the Joker? It’s almost like Todd Phillips was playing a joke on his audience. Which is why Tim Dillon ultimately surmisses:

"It’s not even hate watchable. That’s how terrible it is."

(Hollywood knew from the script what they were financing [Joker dies before meeting Batman] but still greenlighted it. And as it was being made, Hollywood could see what was made, but didn't pull the plug early. And once finished, Hollywood could have called it a loss, and shelved it, but released it to theaters, instead)

Yeah... I just found out [SPOILER ALERT] that he just dies pathetically at the end after basically being beat up by everybody else in the movie, whether physically and/or emotionally and/or mentally.

Maybe one day I'll watch it for a laugh. As a troll, it's pretty funny, considering how much money people lost on it. Phoenix and Phillips banked $20 Million. GaGa got her $12 Million. A terrible movie was made and some rich people lost some money. And an IP that might have been successful is now dead too.

I think Phillips knows that he'll never be trusted again, but I'm pretty sure he was well aware of that going into this.

Is she a pornographic actress, maybe not but she is a movie tv star and a Pinup softcore girl, Pamela Anderson a Playboy Bunny Playmate, movie The Last Showgirl is a 2024 American drama film directed by Gia Coppola and written by Kate Gersten. It stars Pamela Anderson, Jamie Lee Curtis, Dave Bautista, Brenda Song, Kiernan Shipka, Billie Lourd and Jason Schwartzman. Controversy has surrounded her with Rockers, Tommy Lee, Kid Rock and STI STD rumors AIDs, she was born in Ladysmith, British Columbia, Canada, she has issues and told stories of abuse, Anderson decided to have breast implant surgery, increasing her bust size to 34D, she is a self made 'star' one of her starts in film tv was role as Lisa, the original "Tool Time Girl", on the ABC comedy series Home Improvement, her big breakthrough role was as C.J. Parker on Baywatch, which she played for five seasons, she has appeared in many reality tv shows like Big Brother, Dancing with the Stars, Dancing on Ice etc outside of her pip-up girl look she had to struggle to be taken seriously.

it has potential as a film from the trailer, it seems to have Blonde 2022 film vibes or The Fighter, The Cutting Edge Going for the Gold, Flashdance, Myra Breckinridge, Fatal Instinct, Strictly Ballroom 1992, Roseland, Eyes Wide Shut, Saturday Night Fever, Black Swan, Wild Things, The Wrestler 2008 film

Pamela Anderson was a sexy icon Bunny before youtubes and the internets and the Snapchats and Facebooks and OnlyFans Pronopgraphy Camgirl and Instagrams of people half naked advertising themselves online
the Hugh Hefner era, women became exhibitionists and I guess it still had 'class' before everything went trashy, the Alan Dershowitz era would come to back up the wife killers and those convicted of distribution of obscenity, a new age of interweb pornography everywhere while the Aussies now decide only 16 yr old should be on the net, avoid all the temptations of drugs, pornography, gambling other terropr extreme vices and addictions

it could be an interesting subject, somewhat like the 1920s the 'Burlesque' entertainment era
but I don't see it doing huge at box office, the topic is 'strange' maybe adult-ish

Arguably 2014's Whiplash, is a movie of similar style...however they are not 'dance' films and a male role or Mickey Rourke as a Wrestler is a different subject matter

At $210, I don't imagine this one comes very close to breaking even. I think it will go somewhere along the lines of the flops we had in the first 1/3rd of the year before the summer blockbusters came out and made cash. Probably won't lose so much money it's embarrassing like Borderlands or Argylle though.

Good? If you want to see baboons and rhinos killing gladiators, sharks eating sailors, an Emperor being assassinated, but that's not my idea of "good."

The movie did carry over one good thing from the first Gladiator: the sad music sung in a language I don't recognize played at the very end, when Russell Crowe is having a death dream of being reunited with his murdered wife and son and he walks across his fields of grain in the Pagan version of an after life.

The song “Now We Are Free” by Hans Zimmer from the 2000 film Gladiator is sung in an invented language called idioglossia created by Lisa Gerrard. Lisa Gerrard doesn't sing in English, but uses "the language of the Heart". “I sing in the language of the Heart,” begins Gerrard. “It's an INVENTED LANGUAGE that I've had for a very long time.

Thanks for the review Lisa Gerrard is a great sound artist, they should have paid her to write more music rather than putting raps or electronic noises in as part of Trailer of the new score or sound track. I'm not sure I will watch this movie.

I think the trailer with Rappers sound may have damaged its chances for profits
checking the new soundtrack it seems fine but missing some of that simple melodic harmonic magic in the original, I have no idea why they thought adding Rappers would make it sell better. The Rap thing seems to have been removed from the sound track.
For some reason Hans Zimmer, who had composed the score to the 2000 film Gladiator, chose not to score its sequel. When the trailer came out nobody liked the Raps saying use of modern hip-hop to soundtrack the film set in ancient Rome was jarring

a guy called Harry Gregson Williams was involved, however even though he's been involved in Hollywood for a while and even though I do listen to movie scores I can not recall a single one of his songs. Maybe they are too busy and missing that simple catchy hook or easy listening repeating melodic line that opens and draws people in to classical music or old film music and has them singing or whistling along to a catch part of the tune, his songs are very well done but its missing something basic a short riff, melody, or phrase, that is designed to catch the listener’s attention. I was listening to his stuff and I think the only think I ever rememver is Antz an animation with a sound track, it stared Dan Aykroyd, Woody Allen, Danny Glover, J-Lo, Gene Hackman, Sharon Stone, Sylvester Stallone as voice actors.

even though Harry Gregson Williams is a skilled musician his stuff just isn't catchy it does not hook you in

Zimmer has however called him a "phenomenal composer"

from what I hear of the new sound track in quick clips it seems ok, moments of epic and Orchestra sound, a Zimmer approved guy and very skilled British composer, the Rap song in trailers that pissed off pans of the original movie was Recorded 2011 on US Billboard Hot Rap Songs and Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs it also received three nominations at the 2012 British Music Video Awards for Best Urban Video

does Ridley Scott still have the magic as a film maker or is the magic gone?

Gladiator 2 Is a Dismal Retread—With One Bright Spot
I was not entertained.

By Dana Stevens | Nov 18, 2024 5:45 AM

Devising a logical sequel to the Oscar-winning 2000 blockbuster Gladiator was not a self-evident task, given that the hero of the original, Russell Crowe’s Maximus Decimus Meridius, does not survive the movie. Rather than go back in time and imagine an origin story for Maximus, director Ridley Scott and his longtime screenwriter David Scarpa (Napoleon, All the Money in the World) have chosen to set the story a generation after the events of the first film. That choice in and of itself was not a bad one: The prequel as an excuse for franchise extension has become such a cliché it’s generated its own genre of online joke (see: calling a particularly maddening news story or social phenomenon one’s “villain origin story”). But Gladiator 2 (or as it’s spelled in the opening title, GladIIator) sadly comes off as less a reinvention of the original than a curiously literal retread of its plot beats, characters, and themes.

Did we really need the full-on naval battle inside the Colosseum to be complete with circling sharks?

If you answered that question with a hearty “Hell, yeah!” then maybe Gladiator 2 is the holiday movie for you. But I make no guarantees that a taste for bread and circuses will get you through the dramatic longueurs of this two-and-a-half-hour saga . . .

Your choice: Either the original Gladiator 84E46E5A00BAFC0C566845227CF821EFB17263F2

Or an inferior piece of crap called Gladiator II. You decide.

‘Gladiator II’ is a very silly sequel, but only Denzel Washington got the memo

https://www.bostonglobe.com/2024/11/18/arts/gladiator-ii-ridley-scott-
paul-mescal-denzel-washington
/

Since Paramount, Scott, and good old-fashioned corporate greed kick-started the idea of continuing the “Gladiator” franchise, you would think we’d get something more than a rehash of the first film. Yet there are times when the story hews so closely to the original that the sequel plays more like a remake.

Silly is one way to describe “Gladiator II,” but only Washington got the memo. Not only is he acting on a higher plane than anyone else on the screen, he’s savoring every moment. Decked out in ostentatious robes, with rings on every finger and earrings in both ears, Washington strokes his salt-and-pepper beard and plots his Machiavellian schemes with giddy gusto.

In addition to chewing every bit of scenery possible, he throws in all his “Denzel-isms”; that is, all the unique quirks that make him our greatest working actor. We get the laugh, the stern stare, the dialogue deliveries that melt like butter sizzling in a hot skillet. He takes a line like “I own your house, I want your loyalty” and turns it into an Oscar-night clip. If this movie is a hit — and judging by its $87 million international take last weekend, it will be — I wouldn’t be surprised if Washington earned a deserved third Oscar for this role.

The script by David Scarpa, who also wrote Scott’s dreadful 2023 film “Napoleon,” has little else going for it. The emperors are just too stupid to be effective villains, and the war battle sequences are as dreary as they were in “Napoleon.” The rivalry between Marcus Acacius and Lucius is resolved in a lackluster manner, though I must give props to Scott’s homage to Kurosawa’s “Throne of Blood.”

As for the gladiator matches, they’re ridiculous enough for you to wish the movie didn’t take itself so seriously. In addition to the aforementioned baboons, there are guys riding on rhinos and there’s even a water-based battle with ships. I remember being told in college World History class that the Colosseum was indeed flooded for water battles. However, I don’t recall anything about great white sharks swimming in that water.

Between the sharks, the baboons, and a bellowing Washington yelling about how great he is, “Gladiator II” feels like Scott decided to remake “Jaws,” “The Omen,” and “Training Day” along with “Gladiator.” That sounds like a lot more fun than this movie turns out to be. Thumbs up for Denzel; send the rest of this movie to the lions.

Why Red One Absolutely Bombed At The Box Office

It's been close to 20 years since the last time a new, entirely original Christmas movie released in theaters became a big enough hit to enter anyone's annual rotation of holiday movie watching.

Over the last couple of decades, holiday films have been more the realm of made-for-TV movies and streaming originals. A notable outlier was 2018's "The Grinch," which is actually the current record holder for highest-grossing Christmas movie of all time worldwide. But it also happens to be based on one of the most iconic Christmas stories and characters in history, so it doesn't exactly qualify as a new, entirely original Christmas movie.

The last Christmas movie that was neither based on nor the sequel to an existing property and did strong numbers at the box office was "Elf" in 2003 — and even then, its global take of $229 million still would be considered a flop for a movie as costly as "Red One." The way things are going, "Red One" will be lucky to even reach that number.

All the ways Gladiator 2 trashes history – and the surprising things it gets right

Somewhat accurate-ish

Quote:

Although Geta and Caracalla did rule Rome together for a short period, after the death of their father Septimius Severus, a general who served originally under Commodus, in February 211 AD. But in reality, they were not twins: Geta was slightly younger, being born in March 189 while Caracalla was born in April 188 AD. But as the film depicts accurately, their reign was disastrous, bedevilled by poor relations between the two of them from the beginning.

half correct half wrong?

Quote:

some accuracy, at least, in the depiction of the Roman conquest of Numidia, but the timing is wholly inaccurate. Eastern Numidia, which roughly corresponds to modern-day Algeria, was conquered in 46 BC, leading to the creation of the province Africa Nova shortly afterwards. The action of Gladiator 2 is set roughly sometime between 200 and 211 AD – we’ll come back to that in a moment – which means that, even in the film’s universe, Numidia would have become a Roman outpost hundreds of years before the opening suggests.

Wrong

Quote:

Did the Romans read the daily paper over coffee?

The printing press was not invented until 1440, and the first newspaper of any kind did not exist until 1566, when weekly handwritten gazettes were distributed in Venice. Coffee and tea, meanwhile, were unknown to the Romans, although it is just, theoretically, possible that Thraex could be drinking a herbal infusion of some sort, or that he has a cup of hot spiced wine in front of him.

Why a misfire? Hollywood stretched a Broadway musical, which was watched in one sitting, into a year-long spectacle. See Wicked Part One and Two for free next year and see it in one sitting at home.

“Wicked” also has to overcome the reality that stage musicals haven’t translated to box office riches in over a decade. The last ones to really connect were 2012’s “Les Miserables” ($442 million globally) and 2014’s “Into the Woods” ($212 million globally against a $50 million budget). More recent attempts like Steven Spielberg’s “West Side Story” remake, Chu’s “In the Heights,” “Dear Evan Hansen,” “Cats” and “The Color Purple” all sputtered in cinemas despite being based on popular productions.

And then there are the actual songs, which may well leave you wishing that you didn't travel long distances and pay for tickets to hear this when you could have gotten the experience for free and at home:

One of the biggest Christmas films of the year has been gifted lumps of coal, after making just $34,000,000 on the opening weekend, it has been claimed.

Red One was released in cinemas last week, following Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson and Chris Evans teaming up to save Santa Claus from kidnappers.

On the surface, that sounds like a guaranteed festive hit with two of the biggest A-Listers around, and it climbed the domestic box office, replacing Venom: The Last Dance at the top spot.

However, according to Deadline, it took in around $34million across the weekend, which is just a fraction of the mammoth $250million budget.

I agree with your prediction on this one.

Especially when the lady playing the wicked witch has been spreading cancer on Twitter.

Not exactly Rachel Ziegler levels of cancer, but it should be enough to put a musical nobody wanted to see in theaters in the red.

Also, as a 45 year male I can appreciate what people see in Ariana Grande. I wouldn't be taking any kids of mine to see her. I don't think they possibly could have chosen somebody worse for the roll of Dorothy.

There is no Dorothy! Ariana Grande is the Good Witch! Ariana Grande (who plays Galinda, aka Glinda the Good) and Cynthia Erivo (who plays Elphaba, aka the Wicked Witch of the West).

Ariana Grande is perfect for the role because: "before Grande was a megafamous pop star, before she was even a breakout actress on a Nickelodeon television show, she was a theater kid. The “thank u, next” singer charmed in a local production of Annie at 8 years old, and landed her first big gig at 15, as an original cast member of the Broadway musical 13. Though she swiftly moved onto the screen (in the teen show Victorious) and up the charts (with a handful of high-selling albums), Grande remains known for her love of the stage, still managing to do projects like 2016’s Hairspray Live! She is also, famously, a mentee of Kristin Chenoweth, Broadway’s original Galinda, and has commented on Galinda being her dream role since she first saw Wicked as a tween. If Grande’s Broadway tenure and her musical legend of a mentor weren’t enough to prove her theater-kid bona fides, Grande has also shown a breadth of musical knowledge that only a true stan of the stage could possess."

Maybe the movie can be as lucrative as the Broadway musical:
In 2016, Wicked surpassed $1 billion in total Broadway revenue, joining The Phantom of the Opera and The Lion King as the only Broadway shows to do so.
