I'm in movie heaven.

Holiday movies so far this year are kicking ass. I say this because, well....Breaking Dawn was not as bad as I feared. I actually had fun watching the latest installment.

The Muppets brought back fond memories and was also loads of fun. Take the kids, don't take the kids (although I recommend taking the kids) you will have a blast either way. Some of the most hilarious scenes involve the humans, but make no mistake this is teh Muppets movie. You have the standard Muppet humor and songs, but some new original songs that had us lol-ing in the aisle. There is a song called "Am I a Man or a Muppet" that will probably get an Oscar nomination it's that good.

J. Edgar was a solid movie worthy of Oscar nominations for DiCaprio for acting and Eastwood for Direction. DiCaprio, IMHO, may very well win the statue this year.

The only competition for him comes from George Clooney in his most emotional and honest performance since, well, ever. Clooney reveals a rawness rarely seen in today's 3D movie universe. The Descendants is a movie that sneaks up on you and steals your heart. Go see this truly awesome movie, it's perfect for the holiday season that celebrates Jesus' birthday and the family as a unit. It's not syrupy sweet, like most holiday fare, but still delivers it's emotional message of family "no matter how dysfunctional."

I'm saving the best for last, Martin Scorsece's Hugo. For me Hugo doesn't need to be presented in 3D, both because of the movie's theme and the irrepressable Scorsece. He gives a master class in movie making while all along entertaining you with a wonderful story. It is old fashioned filmaking at it's best. Magical, albeit somewhat dark, Hugo is the story of the history of film. It is the story of inspiration, of purpose and belief. Scorsece pays homage to the early filmakers and, at the same time, promotes the importance of film preservation. At no point do you feel that you being lectured to, quite the contrary, you are transposed, transfix and transported to the magical land in far off Paris, France. It is a labor of love and a masterpiece by the wizard of film Martin Scorsece.

Merry Christmas to all.

I've been looking forward to this. I'll certainly wait until I can take my nieces and nephews though. Thanks for the heads up Shiny

Would this suit someone who knows little about J Edgar? Or in reality doesn't have much interest in the guy? I'm open to being enlightened of course, but it's just something that has never really crossed my path...

Interesting.... I did like Clooney in Up in The Air - although I thought it was a little over hyped, so may consider Descendants.

Hard to take a "time for good movies" thread seriously when it opens with praise for Twilight....

I do want to see Hugo.

"Goram it kid, let's frak this thing and go home! Engage!"

I'll agree to disagree. I hated it. I felt they were just beating a dead horse instead of bothering to come up with an actual new storyline... Am I a man or a muppet?? I didn't care, it was whiny, I took a nap... Even my kid gave it a "B" and she's not picky...

Yeah, I know, right. I would never have thought I would use "Good" and Twilight in the same sentence, yet I did have "fun." Yes, there were some cringe worthy moments, but I found that it did not take itself seriously - the film was poking fun at itself (at least that's what I got from it), in my mind that's the sign of a good movie. Star Wars 1,2&3 failed miserably in this area, but not X-Men: First Class or Raiders of the Lost Arc. Believe me, I was the last person looking for anything remotely entertaining about Breaking Dawn, but I laughed in spite of that. Like I said, there were some moments that it was intentional and others - not so much - but there you have it.

Hi Sleepy,

The Muppets is pure fun. Take the kids.

J. Edgar - Well, to be honest, I wasn't interested at first but my date wanted to go. Clint Eastwood and DiCaprio convinced me. You don't have to know anything about J. Edgar to see the film. It's more about his personal life and his demons than about the FBI. Somewhat historical, but mainly about what made him tick. It's not for the casual movie goer. Let me say this: it's a tour de force for DiCaprio.

The Descendants is funny and sad, but without being manipulative. It seems to come natural and is not predictable with a perfect ending. Payne is at his best here which includes the cast. Clooney is solid, better than Up in the Air. And I liked Up in the Air.

Hugo surprised me how good it was. Nothing more to say since it flowed from me in my review.

Thanks for your response.

Naw, I was looking forward to this one, maybe a little too forward. You'd have no way of knowing my kids fav vids are "Ode to Joy with Beaker" "and "M'na, M'nah"

It seemed to me that they were re-hashing and they knew it so they were just making fun of the re-hash and hoping it passed for entertinment... There was no child-like wonder to this one, just anti-climactic Blues Brothers style dance numbers, fall flat one liners(most I had heard used before) and forced nostalgic references. I was waiting for the adventure, the innovation...Not reliving the same movies I've seen a dozen times. Heck the only real good part was the last ten seconds...
Will you marry me?

M'na m'nah

Well, I went with my niece and her 2 girls (15 and 8) who absolutely loved it. Silly, yes. Corny, yes. I agree that some scenes were a bit flat. Rehashed, yes, many jokes were rehashed - but I laughed and so did the rest of the audience in the theatre I was in.

I recently went to see another movie at the nultiplex and saw a line outside the entrance for the Muppet movie. It was primarily made up of young adults (mid 20s and 30s), with some kids mixed in. Of course, that doesn't mean much in today's time. People lined up to see the Star Wars trilogy (Episodes 1,2,3) which were less than stellar and have lined up to see the Twilight saga unfold, so yeah, there's no accounting for taste.
