SHINYGOODGUY

I'm a sucker for sword and socery movies, so I was all aglow with geeky excitement when I saw the trailers for Snow White and the Huntsman. I saw the 'dark' treatment given in the trailers and thought it had a LOTR kind of vibe.
It did, but it was all style and no substance.

I went with my nieces and her husband, and the only one who had any fun was the 8 year-old. What went wrong? Well, for starters - the script, then the direction, and then the film editing. I really liked the performances of Chris Hemsworth, Sam Claflin, Ian McShane and Bob Hoskins, but even they could not save this rather uneven script. And here's the main reason why it was uneven:

The above article gives inside info as to the workings of Hollywood and how easily they can let egos totally sabotage a project. Like I always say, unless your Steven Spielberg, they will fuck with your vision. A young man named Evan Daughtery can attest to that. Plus you had a first-time director as well, Rupert Sanders, who must have felt he won the lottery getting this plum assignment.

For instance, take this line in the movie "she's the one" now where have we heard that one before. And notice I did not mention Charlize Theron's name. Can anyone say Over the Top. She screams, snorts and huffs and puffs her way through the film. I would think that Charlize would have heard of the old adage "less is more," but apparently the director did not. Her performance could have used a bit of reigning in, and a veteran director most likely would have insisted. It was as though she were playing MacBeth while the rest of the cast an episode of Game of Thrones, yes there were ladies and lords, armor and swords, but Charlize was going for broke while the others did their best to keep up.

It felt as though there were several moments where the director didn't quite know what he wanted to do with the material, as several scenes either went flat, had no focus or was simply edited horribly. It even ended with a lurch, like when a car's engine continues to sputter and start long after you turn off the ignition key. Don't get me wrong, there were flashes of brilliance, but they were few and far between. Which brings me to the lead characters, there was no chemistry whatsoever between Hemsworth and Stewart. Hemsworth was one of the few bright spots in the film as the Huntsman, but Stewart was still in Twilight mode, although she was not entirely bad, but she just didn't convince me she was in love with anyone. That, to me, is part of the story's appeal.

But, there I was, sitting in the dark, my geek heart pounding in anticipation of the coming epic battles, and I'm still waiting. Disappointed? You bet. It started out good, the narrator properly setting up the premise, but somewhere along the line it began to meander it's way through the story written by the Brothers Grimm. The movie ended, as I said, with a thud rather than a bang. Too bad, because it had such potential.

Now my geek sci-fi heart must wait a week to get it's fix, and it will hopefully be satisfied with Prometheus.
