I went, along with my brother, to see the Nice Guys. I liked it, but with reservations. Both lead actors had chemistry up the wazoo, Gosling was very funny
and has really good comic timing, but for some reason it just didn't quite knock it out of the park.

It was entertaining enough - Russell Crowe being brutally physical and loving every moment of it (a la L.A. Confidential, but with comic flair). Their initial meeting was well set up , but some scenes went nowhere. Gosling was goofy, dishonest and otherwise desperate seeking to make as much money as he could working as a private eye, looking to keep his teenage daughter out of harm's way (but more on that later); but he managed to sleuth his way in and out of jams in this L.A. murder mystery. He's sort of a cross between Maxwell Smart and Inspector Gadget, in keeping with the 70s theme of the movie.

Had director Paul Greengrass kept it light and breezy, well who knows, but he tried to slide in a message about the big bad auto industry, with a side order of
government corruption within the Dept of Justice, and it just felt out of place.
It was like trying to slip in the mayo after making the ham sandwich; it just bogged down the goofiness of Gosling's Holland March - the full time detective and part time dad. Another questionable choice was the use of the actress who played Gosling's daughter, Anjourie Rice (remember that name, this girl is going to be
a star).

She reminded me of a young Jodie Foster. Smart, sassy (still with a way to go for
comic timing, but with a sharp wit and a sharp tongue). The chemistry between her
and Gosling was on par with that of Crowe and his co-star. I got the feeling that the director felt she could give the movie some punch. They found ways to include
her in just about every scene and, although she mostly delivered, both my brother
and I felt it was overkill and blurred the vision of the otherwise entertaining film.

Part 2 Tomorrow

I see you mention that a lot. What's a coda?

There were more likes than dislikes, but I'm a Russell Crowe fan from way back and
I found his work in this to be solid in every way, but this was one of the few times where I could actually see that the script and, consequently, the director drop the ball.

There are times when even great actors phone it in, but Crowe had the very capable
Ryan Gosling feeding him lines, and a very funny comic performance, and I've heard
often enough that a well-respected actor can often lift your game. The blame lay
elsewhere. I recommend it because of the fine chemistry between Crowe and Gosling,
but with some reservations due to the script and poor choices by the director.

I may be nitpicking, but this is what stood out to me.

I enjoyed it, glad I saw it in cinema. Could be the Boogie Nights of 2016.
First time I've seen Karrueche Tran on film.

Codas in film are scenes after the end titles start to roll.
Sometimes excerpts, bloopers, outtakes, deleted clips, and other times intentional spoofs, further storyline content, or dramatic scenes.
Marvel has done a bunch of dramatic scenes, teasers, for upcoming stories in the franchises lately. Civil War had one just after a minute or so of the end titles, and then another at the end of the film. I don't normally describe their dramatic content as spoiler, but many consider it a service to fellow fans to know there is or isn't any, so you can know whether or not to sit through the credits if you are that type of viewer. Guardians of the Galaxy had somewhat humorous clips, and Deadpool had gobs of humor clips. Spy had a well developed spoof of future missions, files, dossiers as background through much of the end credits.
Many Burt Reynolds films of old were known for outtakes, bloopers, etc.

I'm glad you got to see it, it was fun except for the whole John Boy scene at the house. This was a pro!? Reminded me of the A-Team, lots of gun-play, but no one
could shoot straight.

But thanks for the info re: Codas. I used to call them "extras," or should I say
there was a newspaper entertainment writer that called it that and I thought it
was spot on. Extras could also be whenever a show mentions another show, a character from another show or a popular phrase from that show. For example: when
Nathan donned his Firefly duster and pistol on Castle - that's an extra. This reporter would cover extras from TV shows (usually on Fridays) and would often ask fans to submit their "finds." That was great, finding and sharing them with fellow fans, kind of what we do here.

Again, thanks.
