Okay, so I saw this yesterday afternoon and I was going to post about it after I got back but decided to let it settle in my mind first. I gather that those across the pond have got to wait a few more days to see this so I will split this up into the sections of a general non-spoilery part and a spoilery part which will pick on specfic details that you should only read if you've seen the movie. So here I go:

3D or not 3D - that may not be your question
I wasn't particularly bothered about seeing a 3D version but as my cinema only had one showing in 2D and we couldn't get to that it didn't leave a lot of choice. So 3D it was. It is only my second 3D movie (Avatar being the other) and I was impressed by the 3D. It wasn't as constantly in your face as Avatar was and worked well in some subtler moments and also in the more obvious moments like Hawkeye's arrows and Iron Man flying at the screen. IMO they did a good job but the problem I have with 3D is that it isn't 3D. It still looks like moving cardboard cutouts placed on a backdrop. But if you like 3D then it's worth seeing it in 3D.

The Non-Spoilery Review
The film was truly excellent for a comic book/action movie and the world will finally get to see what we already know. Joss Is Boss. It had all the action, humour, tension, character interplay, and thrills you could ever want. Each character has their moments including the 'normal' members of the team. Joss works his wordy magic on an excellent 7-way argument with everybody talking at each other and over each other. There is some great use of reflections in shots and his trademark of turning one type of moment into another one at the flick of button but making it seem so natural. Joss takes his time to bring the characters in get them all together and he doesn't retread too much ground that was already covered in the previous movies. It would certainly help to know the other films, or the source material, as there are several references to past meetings (i.e. Agent Coulson meeting several of them before) but it didn't appear to be essential.
The acting was great for this type of movie and everyone was on good form and worked well with each other. It featured some character development that does carry on from the previous movies, like Iron Man working as part of a team, Capt America finding his place in a new world etc. Again everyone has their moment and all get some funny lines, although Robert Downey Jr probably gets the most but that's because it suits his character more. Personally, I thought for humour that the Hulk stole the show from all of them for most laugh out loud moments but I'll save that for the spoiler section. Which brings me to Mark Ruffalo, who was the untested one in the bunch. All the other main actors have appeared in at least one other movie as their character. I thought Ruffalo was the best of the three cinema Hulks/Banners. He brought that sense of not wanting to deal with 'the other guy', that he was even uncomfortable talking about it and just wanted to be left alone. It really came across in his feelings that everyone was in danger if he was around.
From the trailer the one part I thought might be a let-down or OTT was the clip of the flying beastie chasing Iron Man. It left me with worries that Joss was treading into Michael Bay's dank and stinky waters but I needn't have worried. They fit well with the rest of the bad guys.

There's plenty more I could say but I don't want to go into too much detail. So I'll end this bit with:
If you like any of the other movies (even if it's only one) you will enjoy this movie, it is fun, has great characters, excellent dialogue, stunning FX (I don't recall one bad shot), plenty of action mixed in with the talky bits and not one single moment of it is wasted. Plus it's Joss with a big budget. What's not to like.

So you've seen it? Read on.

I thought the one on one fights in the early part of the movie were very well done and very believable how they got to that point. They weren't contrived just to see the characters fight, they all made some kind of sense.

It was sad to see Agent Coulson go (I liked him) but then it's Joss so he had to kill someone. It was always going to be someone we liked and he couldn't kill any of the seven main characters in the first movie, so going by the numbers he was the obvious choice. And in his last words he gave the very reason his death had meaning, it brought the group together, it gave them a reason to avenge that linked them all. Even Tony Stark would admit that he liked the guy. I loved his line after Pepper called him Phil and Tony remarks that "His first name isn't Agent".

For laugh out loud moments I have to give it to the Hulk, even though he says the least. After he and Thor crash into the building and he just punches him away like he was nothing was excellent. Then when Loki called out that he was a god just to have Hulk smash him around like a limp ragdoll was even better and funnier. Banner's tranformation was post on and I'd even consider his final size to be about right, big but not too big (like the Ang Lee Hulk movie).

Joss even managed to avoid the obvious cliches of setting something up early on to be used in the final battle. When Thor and Iron Man fought and the lightning gave Iron Man 400% power I was sure this would be used towards the end but it wasn't and so he didn't fall into that cliche. It was also nice that Hawkeye didn't have the usual endless supply of arrows

If I did have to pick any faults it's that the end of the mothership was a little bit too close to Independance Day with a single nuke being shoved up the middle and somehow it destroys an advanced alien ship. But I can live with that, it's no worse than most others, and the rest of this movie more than makes up for it. I also thought that Banner going from an out of control Hulk (trying to kill Natasha) to one that took orders (brilliant smile when told to 'smash') and could be controlled was a bit too quick but again I can live with it.

Thanks I hadn't realised it was a post job. I didn't check beforehand because, as I said, I had no plan to watch the 3D version. So in a way the 3D impressed me even more, but I'd still recommend sticking to the 2D version.
I saw your scene that you mentioned many moons ago but it was dark and, obviously, I had no idea what you looked like so I can't say if you made it. I'd be curious to know if you spot yourself when you see it.

@Wish - As I briefly said I don't think you'd need to see the movies, as some background is provided, but it would be a definite advantage to know something about the characters from somewhere, especially their origins. I've seen all the movies and knew various degrees of backstory before seeing them so I am not really qualified to answer that question. It really needs someone who knows virtually nothing about them, although how many people are going to see this and not know anything? Surely most people at least know the Hulk's basic backstory?

Saw it last night. It was good. I think he did a good job of giving all the characters some time to shine. That being said it was still flawed but I can't really go into it without spoilers.

I really liked Hulk in this movie. Which I wouldn't expect because he's my least favorite of the big 4. He was just really good comic relief and as part of an ensemble it didn't mean that the answer to every situation was to just smash stuff really hard. That's why I think he doesn't carry his own movies too well.

The aliens were the big flaw IMO. They were not established well at all. They're just the faceless bad guys who are there to be cannon fodder and are bad for the sake of being bad. I think they could have used a lot more exposition and purpose.

Loki was cool but even his motivations seemed paper thin. "I'm still pissy about being slighted as a kid". Deep villains can sometimes be the best part of super hero movies. I guess they just didn't have time to cover everything.

The fight scenes were top notch IMO. One of my most common complains with super hero movies is that they rarely have much action. This movie had plenty of action. They didn't skimp on iron man or anything really.

I like that Colston got Washed. I didn't see it coming like most deaths in the Jossverse. My prediction failed here though. I thought the after movie scene was going to be Fury and Hill standing over a body bag with a skrull in Colston's suit and Fury saying something like "we've got bigger problems to worry about" or something like that.

I was kinda hoping Hawkeye would eat it. He's just not a very interesting character to me and I don't buy that his arrows were taking down such highly advanced aliens.

All in all it was a good movie and I'm sure I'll be buying it when it comes to blu-ray. I'd probably even see it again in theaters if my friends wanted to go again.

LWAVES - You nailed it. Or, at least, you saw the same movie I did.

As for the spoilery stuff, things you pointed out, I too took notice of them, but wasn't terribly bent out of shape of this or that. Save for one minor issue I had with The Hulk. Easily over looked in some of the later scenes. Awesome.

This is a big movie. Multiple main characters, all with their own hero stories, all coming together. Thank Joss that each character worked out, so that you could really view things from each perspective, and it still works. They all stay, ( best as I can tell ) true to their own selves, which is what makes the conflicts and camaraderie both work out, in the end.

Best flick I've seen in a long time.

* Oh, and 1 more thing. I did see it in 3D. Kinda cool, here and there but I'm just not sold on the whole 3D hype. Aside from the 'cut outs on poster board' remarks, it just comes out too dark. I like to see colors and brighter screens, and w/ those glasses, things seemed a bit dark. Might just be my eyes.

Whelp - I saw it, the ex dragged me off to see it with them and just got back, NOT fond of movie theatres, especially that one, seats too close together, very crowded, my seat next to a stoner who kept mumbling to himself and was obviously wasted out of his mind, not to mention being kicked in-under my kneecap repeatedly by people trying to get by in the too narrow, crowded seating and now my good knee is all swollen up and work tonight is gonna massively suck.
THAT theatre gets my "thrown tomato" rating, only one star better than thrown molotov.
Oh yes, and although it was IMAX, the seating was at a BAD angle and range so at any time 1/3 of the screen was just blurry gibberish, again, due to overcrowded seating, i.e. GREED.
If yer gettin the idea I am pissed at the theatre, yer right.

I concur with Lwaves - what there was of the 3D wasn't actually 3D but more of cardboard cutouts at various ranges, and of course, it might have worked better looking right at it instead of from a terribly skewed angle, but I doubt it.

I did actually like the flick - while I watched the first Iron Man, most of this stuff has been obvious go-se and I wouldn't have seen this save for Joss magic, which it has in plenty - focus on character and story was nicely done, special effects were present and credible within the range of a comic-book movie, although I still have issues with Samuel L Jackson trying to carry Nick Fury, he seems almost TOO low key in his portrayal for it to work, but sometimes less is more, sure - doesn't work for me though.

Downey of course completely robs it as Stark, he does deliver a truly powerhouse performance as an entirely credible Stark right down to the personality flaws, and the guy playing Rogers/Cap just rolls back and forth with him so naturally - also the guy doing Banner really nails it, which kind of surprised me, and this one managed to stuff in a lot of humor and didn't take itself too over the top serious, and some of the humor is all the funnier cause it's NOT appropriate for the moment, but folks under stress dealing with it the only way they know how.

Ok, yanno - I damn near peed myself when Loki tried his usual chicanery on the Hulk, and got so completely curbstomped all he could do for some time was lay there wondering what hit him, that was friggin HI-LARIOUS...

And Spot on character development for the Hulk too, Stark is telling Banner earlier that he really believes there's more to the Hulk than just rage, and later on this comes back around when Hulk rescues Stark, whom Banner happens to actually like.

Also, the dynamic between Thor and Loki would be easier to understand by folks who put meaning into blood ties, which I do not, but I comprehend it well enough - they do manage to evolve a sort of love-hate-responsibility thing which works even though it logically shouldn't.

My two favorite out of nowhere bits tho ?

The Shield guy playing Galaga!
And the old guy who stands up to Loki - sure he was outmatched and outclassed massively, but HE STILL STOOD UP - score a serious moment of awesome for the guy, a mere normal nobody, I thought that just kicked ass, all by itself.

Saw the 3D version. No problem with it, but definitely not on level uv the 3D in Avatar. Aside frum sum uv the computer cartoon moviez, are there any other truly 3D moviez?

The movie iz great! After 4 yirz uv bild up, I wuz afraid nobody woud be able to make it live up to expectationz. Joss did not disappoint!

I'm going to see it again in 2D during the week.

Wishimay, I recommend seeing the previous moviez first. Iron Man, Iron Man 2, Hulk, Captain America and Thor. I watched them all a week ago, plus the underrated first version uv Hulk with Eric Bana.

And in case you dont know already, sit thru the credits, they all hav a little scene afterward, including Avengerz.

I'm one of those people that don't hail Joss. To be honest I believe that he is brilliant, but has a pathological need to sabotage himself, which is why fans are treated to things like having a truly beloved character randomly impaled while speaking his new catchphrase. I'm glad that we'll never get any more Firefly because of this. I will also never forgive him for Season 4 of Angel.

This is why I was so happy when I found out that he was doing the Avengers - he's playing with someone elses toys which means he's not allowed to break them.

I'm a big fan of his run on Astonishing X Men. He's the first to write Scott and Logan right as characters and I knew he'd bring that same thing to this. Take Cap, in this he's very much a member of the WW2 generation - trusting of authority, quick to jump in, and always about fair fights. I also liked that Cap has obviously been reading up on history and has a barely concealed bitterness about him now that has everything to do with how the world turned out. It's all there in a brief exchange with Fury, lots of subtext. But even with all that, he's still the last to figure out that Fury is hiding things. Joss proves that he has as good a grasp on every one of the other characters as he has with Cap, and that's why it all works.

As far as the movie itself goes, I think that it's likely going to set the new ticket sales record. More importantly is that I think that it may in fact get a best picture nomination because it's just so darn well put together. There isn't a single wasted moment in the whole film and every single one of the characters gets their chance to shine that is distinct, that is perfectly in character in each instance. He didn't even do an extended title sequence, just flashed "Avengers" on screen and got right back to the story.

And most definitely, sit through the credits.

I didn't exactly have high hopes for this movie (thought Thor was an embarrassment and Iron Man 2 was straight up demeaning--double slow motion ass cam, really? Really??), but I did hope that Joss finally had a big success so he could get the respect he deserved, get happy and no longer feel the need to pointlessly kill off his characters as the ruling metaphor of his creative career.

So, yay, the movie was lots of fun! I've always believed that straight superhero movies (as opposed to revisionist meditations on dark Jungian psych) need to be funny. Not just Arnold Schwarzenegger quippy, but really funny. Think Gene Hackman in Superman: the Movie. This was funny and smart and Joss juggled his many responsibilities very well, even fitting in some lovely sermons on the nature of evil and how to face tyranny.

If I were looking for the person to direct Hunger Games 2, I'd have found him after this weekend.

Biggest surprise of the evening? Loki's endlessly badass outfit. That coat, with all its gold metal fittings was gorgeous. Even his armored gold bug version was bizarre and scary instead of silly (*cough* freakin' Thor I'm looking at you *cough* never thought I'd see superhero costumes that out-tackied the Schumacher nippled chest piece, but Ken Branagh proved me wrong).

Loved the handling of BW and "the Hawk." Did anyone else get a huge Mulder/Scully vibe off that duo? Can you just see the remake staring these two? Slightly more...action oriented, of course. Loved the first few appearances of the Hulk, how the camera could barely keep him in frame while everyone freaked the hell out. Banner's secret was clever, thought provoking and integral to the plot all at the same time.

I thought the bad guys were suitably frightening and, contrary to early reports, could actually shoot straight and hit their targets. Good times. And, me, I vote for 3d. The fight in midtown was much clearer in 3d than in 2d and the armored levitating whales were pretty awesome 3d-ified.

Fury already 'lied' on the trading cards being in Coulson's jacket pocket. They weren't. Was that even real blood on them ?

Don't get me wrong, I'd love him to have survived. But same goes w/ Wash. Who also got ran completely through, and died. Which reminds me, so did Mal, but he lived. Of course, that through and through was underplayed in the final version. It was was much worse in the early ,sneak peak version.



One of my pet peeves that I have w/ Joss, is how certain folks, non super hero types, get horrific injuries, and some how survive. Not only survive, but are able to carry on, and 'shake it off', until the bad guy is beaten, the signal is sent, or some such.

I think I was wrong about who she is. I went back to the flick with the same buddy I went with the first time, and he was busy looking for details this time around. He says he thinks her nametag read "Betty." The only thing I can thin of in that case would be the "Heroes Reborn" storyline from the 90's. It featured a teenaged girl becoming the new "Bucky," and you just know that has Joss written all over it.

I want time to play it's part and further viewings before I decide where it fits into my all-time faves list. It is certainly my fave comic book/superhero movie of the whole bunch released in the last few years. I don't count Nolan's Batman as 'comic book' or a superhero or that would be top for me.
Joss has made a truly excellent blockbuster movie that encapsulates all that is good about comic book movies and adds that layer of Jossness that we know from his other work. He has shown other filmmakers how it should be done.

So what were your fave bits/lines?

I tentatively agree, I liked that plot towards the end of the movie, but at the very beginning there's a scene that really had me thinking it felt too Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers for Joss. Plus, why were they speaking English? Make up some dark speech of Mordor for them or something and then subtitle it, you avoid some of the easy pitfalls.

Plus, why were they speaking English? Make up some dark speech of Mordor for them or something and then subtitle it, you avoid some of the easy pitfalls.


For a guy who holds to the truism of 'no sound in space', that the aliens speak English does seem a bit out of place. Of course, I also thought the same of those from Asgard. Wouldn't they speak in some Nordic or Sweedish sounding tongue ?

But then, we wouldn't get such great lines as, " Doth mother know thy wear her drapes? "




Saw it again. Despite a few issues w/ the movie I had, minor ones, it was a blast. The 1st time, it was more to a geeky, hard core audience, and in the day. The second time, it was at night, to a bigger audience. Really LOUD reaction and approval from the audience at certain times. Been a while since I've been at the movies where so many folks instantly start hooting and laughing... twas fun!

And I stayed to the VERY end of the credits. Very clever.


( Also... I was very impressed with Cobie Smulders, playing Maria Hill. I knew her primarily as 'Scherbatsky ', from How I met your Mother fame. At first, I wondered .. " How'd she end up here ? ". Then it dawned on me... 2 of her co-stars from the show have ties to Joss.(Alyson and NPH. )

Duh!

I've always found Cobie to be smokin hot, but she really came through on the big screen. Nicely done!

I guess they could have had universal translators on them or something. So that they can yell out "WE WILL BE YOUR DOOM" to any race they come across at any moment. But I could really have gone with some of those lines being delivered in something growling and gutteral. The delivery is almost distracting in English.

Other than that, I have no complaints. The movie brought the entertainment and the funny, and seemed to stay true to the roots of each superhero and the ensemble itself.

Some of those places serve great falafel. That stuff is delicious.

Lets remember, just because we, as an audience, hear English - it does not automatically mean that is what the characters are supposed to be speaking when they are talking to each other (Asgaudians, Chitauri, etc.).

True. It was just... noticeable. And I think some of the lines might have come across better if they'd done something like that. I guess I can accept the Asgardians speaking English, because they're basically mythological gods, and who's to say they didn't influence the evolution of English and German and etc.

But, just not so sure about all them other shiny robe guys and the English. Universal translators is my best guess.

But that's my point - they may not have been speaking English - the filmmakers just did the scenes in English so that we could follow.

For example - the film The 13th Warrior - the majority of the film is in English - yet not a single character speaks English. They spoke Arabic and old Norse. But we still heard English.

They really only had a few lines in the movie, it wouldn't have hurt anything to make up a language and put in subtitles, and it's not like Joss didn't have a scene in Russian with subtitles. Anyway, it was just a thought.

I was a bit miffed that Thor never took a second to at least call Jane, since the whole 'I give you my word I'll be back' and then he didn't come back. There's always hope for a deleted scene, though.



Definitely enjoyed this film. Like, so much. I'm most definitely a Hawkeye fan, so seeing him kick some butt, among other things, was greatly appreciated.

I was pleasantly surprised by Spider-man and sadly disappointed by Batman. Avengers rocked the whole way through though. Marvel's got a tough act to follow.

I guess my main issue w/ Spiderman was in some of the 'science' parts of the story. Lizards 'herding' , down towards the sewer... reminded me of the silly Penguin ( Danny Devito ) from the earlier Batman movies. And there were other, smaller points, as well as the fact that the whole reboot comes so soon after the Toby McGuire version.

I liked it more than I thought I would, at least.

Saw The Avengers again, recently. Did a mini marathon, with Thor, Captain America, too.

And TNT has been showing the heck out of Iron Man, 1 and 2, so I'm really looking forward to 3, this summer.
