Okay, so I'm new to the community. Hi.

A little about me. I'm a 20-something college student and part time writer from the Netherlands. My field of study is policy, management and technology, for those who are interested. When I'm not studying or working (an honest job, I swear) I'm working on the manuscript of my first book. (or on Fanfiction, because I like to steal characters and toy with them.)

I got into watching Firefly over the weekend because I had it sitting on my hard drive for a while now. I'm ashamed to admit I downloaded it because of the references made on The Big Bang Theory. (Seriously, I couldn't stand that there was a show mentioned that I didn't know, so I downloaded it) And then, after I watched everything (in order, or so it turns out) I rewatched everything. I swear, it's the best show I ever saw, how did it ever get canceled?

So here I am: I volunteered to be a browncoat because, well, it seemed like the thing to do.

How many references on BBT did you notice? With Nathan I thought the reference was subtle enough to slip by anybody not already in the know.
Does this mean you've seen Serenity as well? Done the Impossible?
I know I have enjoyed the Official Visual Companion books of Firefly & Serenity.

Yeah, I saw Serenity too, but I haven't dug into any of the other stuff making up the canon. Are the books any good?

As far as BBT goes, I got the obvious 'be mad at FOX for canceling Firefly' jokes, but I think I missed a lot. It wasn't until after I started googling that I realized that Nathan Fillion was in the last season. I have to admit, that scene got a helluvalot funnier once I understood who he was.

There's no place I can be since I found Serenity.

Welcome, Xipper, glad to have you aboard.

Seems you may already know about the infamous "running the episodes out of order," which is one of the major reasons Firefly didn't catch on quickly. The biggest mistake was FOX not running the pilot episode first, and instead made Joss and Tim Minear write another episode to convince them what the show would look like week to week, and they only gave them four days to do that. It was also preempted by sports and holiday specials numerous times, and I'd bet many people thought it had already been cancelled long before it actually was.

For those of us who watched when it was originally broadcast it turned out to be both ironic and downright cruel that the last lines we heard on the show were:

Mal - We're still flying.
Simon - That's not much.
Mal - It's enough.

The shortest explanation is that FOX put Firefly into the Friday Night Death Slot. Why is not known.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Friday_night_death_slot#Fox

Maybe that happened because Rupert Murdoch is petty and vindictive. That wacko billionaire has enough kinks in his flawed personality. Maybe he passed the word indirectly down to Fox Entertainment President Gail Berman to kill the show.

For the rest of her life, Gail Berman will be rationalizing why she had to pull the plug on Firefly by saying “Ratings! Numbers!” She never explains why Firefly was scheduled into the Friday Night Death Slot, a decision made months before Firefly had any ratings or numbers to justify going into the Death Slot. Will we ever learn the real explanation of why she sabotaged Firefly? Probably after she retires and writes her memoirs. Or Rupert Murdoch dies, whichever comes first.

Gail Berman interview here:

Tim Minear, who wrote for Firefly, said: I was more angry about "Firefly." In this case, I came in to help these two guys, I wrote a lot of the material, and I'm just too tired to be mad. It's hard to be mad when they pay you this much money. And I don't want to whine. But after they scheduled it on Friday nights, I was like: "Friday nights! That's where we're promoting our 13-episode DVD." www.nytimes.com/2004/04/18/arts/television-same-night-same-channel-sam

I honestly didn't know that those were the last lines of the show, I'm still a little fussy on how the show was originally aired. It's sort of prophetic in a way though, seeing how the show just seems to have lived on despite it being canceled. Just sayin'.

And thanks Second, I'll read into that because this must be the greatest blunder in TV history to have Firefly canceled.

And I just realized I wasn't even in highschool when this aired, I'm not even quite sure if I spoke English at the time and I'm not even sure if Firefly ever aired in the Netherlands at all... I'm just very grateful for Internet right now.

The last lines we heard here in the States, but of course that should have been the last lines of the first episode we saw.

This was the broadcast schedule for Firefly:
20 September, 2002 - The Train Job
27 Sept - Bushwhacked
4 Oct - Our Mrs. Reynolds
11 Oct - preempted
18 Oct - Jaynestown
25 Oct - Out of Gas
1 Nov - Shindig
8 Nov - Safe
15 Nov - Ariel
22 Nov - preempted
29 Nov - preempted
6 Dec - War Stories
13 Dec - Objects in Space
20 Dec - Serenity (finally, the pilot)

Trash, Heart of Gold & The Message never aired, not seen in the US until the DVD release.

The way it should have aired:
Serenity
The Train Job
Bushwhacked
Shindig
Safe
Our Mrs. Reynolds
Jaynestown
Out of Gas
Ariel
War Stories
Heart of Gold
Objects in Space
Trash
The Message

Then Joss reshot and/or looped some dialogue in the last few and rearranged them for the DVD set, so the last four after War Stories ended up:
Trash
The Message
Heart of Gold
Objects in Space

Just to add that Firefly had already been cancelled by Fox, and Joss was able to finish shooting the final scenes/episodes, and the entire filming was wrapped on 20 December, without the Pilot ever being broadcast, and none of them knowing if it ever would be aired. That night they all went home and saw the Pilot broadcast.

Not sure about them not knowing the pilot would be aired that night, or that day being the last day they filmed, but what I remember is that FOX promoted that broadcast as an "Origin Special." IIRC, they had not officially announced the cancellation, but Joss and crew already knew. It was some time in January 2003 when they finally admitted it.

It was officially on "hiatus" at first, but deep down we all knew what that meant.

IIRC, we knew the pilot was airing at least a week ahead of time.

Here's one of the old threads about it the cancellation.
http://fireflyfans.net/mthread.aspx?tid=1146
It was started a week before the pilot aired and it mentions Adam and Tim posting about it elsewhere. Damn, has it really been that long ago?

And welcome, Xipper!

Thanks for clarification.

The last day of filming on 20 December I believe was detailed in Official Companion Vol 2.
