JEWELSTAITEFAN

The first Serenity passenger booked during Pilot Serenity, along with Simon Tam and his box, and Dobson. Despite Kaylee's assertion, he is not a grandpa. His pre-religious past seems to be a mystery, but intriguing.
He is the first of the 9 BDH to expire.

Played by Ron Glass.

In War Stories, he points out that although the Bible specifically does frown upon killing, it is somewhat fuzzier on the subject of kneecaps. This is prep for going to save the Captain.

In the film which he expires in, I liked the campfire scene with him and Mal, discussing the concept of a "plan" - or not.

So many great Shepherd moments. But when I think Shepherd Book, this popular scene always pops into my head first:

Yep. Special Hell.

Also, the hair.

Does anyone actually like the direction the comics took his character?

ANONYMOUSE

Jaynestown:

RIVER (O.S.): They say the snow on the roof was too heavy. They say the ceiling will cave in. His brains are in terrible danger.

BOOK: River? Why don't you come out?

RIVER: No! Can't. Too much hair.

ZOE chuckles.

BOOK (nonplussed): Is - is that it?

ZOE: Hell, yes, Preacher. If I didn't have stuff to get done, I'd be in there with her.

BOOK (giving her a nonplussed look too): It's the rules of my order. Like the book. It symbolizes...

ZOE: Uh-huh. River, honey? He's putting the hair away now.

RIVER: Doesn't matter. It'll still be there...waiting.

As to The Shepherd's Tale, to which you're probably referring...well, it had to be something like that. He had knowledge of Alliance procedures and some sort of high-level security pass, as shown in Safe, so...

Except if he left the Alliance the way he did, he wouldn't still rate the VIP treatment he got in Safe.

I always hoped he would have turned out to be the commanding Alliance General at Serenity Valley.

I liked the dialog in Serenity. Just off the top of my head...when Kaylee is asking about him not caring about where he is going he says something to the effect "sometimes how you get there is the worthier part." Loved the pseudo-high talk. Throughout the series and it is one reason I find it so intriguing and charming.

Also liked the part where he tries to put River's outburst with the cans in perspective "We'll have a few mystery meals" while shaking his head.

Then in the last one (Objects in Space) I believe where River is perceiving their internal dialog and he says "I don't give a flip if you are innocent or not, so where does that leave you..."

Because Book was written to be a mystery (and because the show was cancelled so early), I find I'm very appreciative of any moment where we see what's going on with him. I'm sure it didn't stand out to me as much the first time around, just because so much else was happening, but in retrospect I really love the last scene between him and Inara near the end of the pilot.

BOOK
I've been out of the abbey two days,
I've beaten a lawman senseless, I've
fallen in with criminals. I watched
the captain shoot the man I swore to
protect.
(beat)
And I'm not even sure if I think he
was wrong.
