So... I just saw Bushwhacked for the first time last night. And, can I just say? that was so creepy! I guess I'm still confused about what exactly a reaver is. But good golly miss molly! That episode was creepy, with the dead folks hanging from the ceiling, and the creepy survivor messin up his face and trying to kill everybody.

Here is my question (and why I don't really understand what a reaver is):

why would they come on to a ship, kill everybody, hang them from the ceiling, and not take the valuable stuff that was in the room where they hung the bodies? Seems like somebody said something about them eating the insides, but I wasn't sure if that was metaphorical or not. and if they eat them, why wouldn't they take the bodies with them?

None of us are quite clear (yet) on what a Reaver is, I think... there's a whole load of questions I have, including: How does Mal know so gorram much about them? (More of his Reaver knowledge shows up in the pilot, in case you haven't seen it)

The eating people part is not metaphorical - we know that ("If they take the ship, they'll rape us to death, eat our flesh, and sew our skins into their clothing. And if we're very, very lucky, they'll do it in that order." - Zoe in the pilot ep)

Questions abound though - some of their technology doesn't look like other stuff in the Firefly universe (the organic look of the booby trap)

I don't buy Mal's theory on how people become Reavers though - and I'm sure we'll at some point learn more about this. (I'm assuming that the series keeps going here)

Bushwhacked was actually one of my favorite of the pre-"Out of Gas" episodes. I've wondered about the Reavers motivations myself. Perhaps they have other means of support and their attacks are for other reasons than mere conquest or profit. The various nations seeking a foothold in the colonization of America were eager to use 'savages' to further their own ends. State sponsered terrorism, if you will. I just hope we get the chance to find out.
Anybody heard anything from Joss since last friday?

Hi all,

Did anyone notice in "Serenity" the reavers ship had an unshielded reactor, massive radiation exposer to anyone on their ship. Wash thought that was absolutly nuts. Maybe the reavers are REALLY crazy? Anybody else on this line of thought?

I'm just curious as to what Jayne's past with them is. He's awfully jumpy around them, for being all...hehe...fearless.

Jayne IS very jumpy when it comes to Reavers. I think it's because A: he heard the stories around the campfire too and B: for all his muscle and might, I don't think he feels he can fight them. NO ONE survives a Reaver attack. It's what you've never encountered that is the scariest. I think he's a total 12 year old when it comes to Reavers. I noticed in Serenity that his hands are shaking when he's loading those huge bullets into that huge gun - was that Vera? Poor guy. It's tough to see a tough guy tremble with fear.

Indeed it is. I'm wondering if there's a some backstory there of a personal experience with Reavers. There was a time before Serenity for him, afterall.

I'm curious. In Bushwhacked, the ship was hit by Reavers. If they are so violent and disgusting, why wasn't there any evidence of flesh-eating and skinning? Wouldn't the ship be covered in blood and stuff? Can't be that the Reavers cleaned up cuz the cafeteria was a mess. Seems like something Mal would have noticed right away. I have to agree with a previous post...I don't really buy Mal's theory.

Whedon's great at exploring the shades of grey in everything. As gross as it could potentially get, I want to learn more about the oxy-moronic "high-tech savages" known as the Reavers.

Despite everything we've learned about them, I still don't believe everything is black and white with the Reavers. Obviously they are intelligent and teamwork-oriented enough to fly large spaceships (albeit in a hazardous manor), track other ships, attach to and board them, etc. before plundering murderously. This suggests to me there is some sort of hierarchy on board a Reaver ship complete with roleplayers... mechanic, navigator, perhaps even a "Captain" like individual.

If they just sat around drinking bone marrow all the time, their ship(s) wouldn't get very far. It would have been interesting to further explore the "Reaver lifestyle".

Which, of course, brings us back to: Damn you FOX for pulling the plug on this show!!!

That's my point. The bodies were there, all nice and stripped and gutted. Yet on the ship itself, no blood anywhere, no flesh, absolutely no evidence of a slaughter. Mal, Zoe and Jayne all did a good bit of looking around before they found the bodies. Wouldn't they have seen some blood somewhere? Or perhaps the Reavers don't kill and gut like savages but maybe more like surgeons? Guess we'll never know.

>>perhaps even a "Captain" like individual.<<

Funny you should mention that. I got the strongest feeling during Serenity, that the guy on Persephone who called Book Grandpa was a Reaver. His ship looked a whole lot like the Reaver ship. The captain may retain a certain sense of... sanity in order to conduct business, pick up unsuspecting passengers, but he enjoys a good chew as well.
