Who was that dweeb, and what was he doing on Inara's shuttle?

One thing still perplexes me. In the pilot, Inara has a stupid whiny AND clingy dweeb as a client.
"Cheat us out our fun...", she shoulda smacked him. She certainly couldn't have picked that one, could she? It wasn't like they were on a small planet with a limited number of possibles, now. What a loser.
Any thought on this, people?

Just thank the girl for a great time, dummy Chrisisall

But EVERYBODY who engages Inara's services is a jerk. Go through the list.

Young Higgins doesn't count, but then again, it was his old man who paid for it.

Hmmmm... and the female politician. Her whole attitude was a bit stand-offish, but I guess that goes with the territory. Okay, she wasn't a jerk.

He was on her shuttle because he was a client.
In Shindig we see how Inara picks her clients.
They send her a wave which is like a video introduction.
You can only glean so much from something like that.
Had she met him in person and he inquired about hiring her, she might have picked up on subtle hints that he had elements of jerk in him.
I'm sure on the vid he was pleasant enough.
Definitely easy on the eye, and, as he said, has parents with influence.
All of her clients can't possibly be jackasses.
The son of the magistrate in Jaynestown was nice, just oppressed by his father..until Inara, um, "wove her spell" we'll just say.

And the ambassador from War Stories seemed to be very pleasant...and helpful later when a dermal-mender was needed.

Before deciding if you like 'The Councilor', read this...

Quote:

. . . . .The device WHIRS TO LIFE. The mouth attaches itself to Mal, writhing
metallic tendrils shooting out from its jagged teeth, burrowing under his
flesh, creeping outwards from the skin on his chest down to his nether
regions and up to his head. As Mal SCREAMS --
CUT TO:
EXT. COUNCILOR'S HOUSE - NIGHT
The idyll of a lavish country house, to establish.
INT. COUNCILOR'S HOUSE - NIGHT
Inara waits in the foyer of this opulent home, uncomfortable about being
here. The Councilor is sitting, a bit blindsided by Inara's presence.
Imperious -- but also a bit nervous.
COUNCILOR
This is an unwarranted imposition.
You are in my home. It belittles
both our stations to --
INARA
A man will die, horribly, if I do not
act. I apologize for my conduct, but
as a member of the world council you
cannot be unaware of what Adelai
Niska is.
COUNCILOR
His skyplex is beyond our
jurisdiction. I really must ask
that --
HUSBAND (O.S.)
Sweetie, we're looking for
Maynard's elephant...
The councilor's very vanilla HUSBAND enters with a young boy, their son.
The Husband sees Inara as he kisses the Councilor on the head. He regards
Inara with benign irritation.
HUSBAND
We're taking solicitors at the house?
I thought you promised...
The councilor blanches, moves to speak --
INARA
Forgive me. I imposed on a mutual
acquaintance for the audience. I
appreciate your position, Councilor.
Goodnight.
Inara, now getting the Councilor's coldness, exits.
EXT. COUNCILOR'S HOUSE - NIGHT
Inara descends the steps to the house.
COUNCILOR (O.S.)
Inara --
Inara stops as the Councilor approaches.
COUNCILOR
You had me in an awkward situation,
you didn't press your advantage.
INARA
I'd never take advantage of a
client's confidence.
COUNCILOR
I... I appreciate it. I'm just sorry
I can't do more to help you.
INARA
(temper rising)
Then do more -- help me. The Council
can claim jurisdiction over Niska's
Skyplex--
COUNCILOR
A year ago, maybe, but Niska's
become... he's bought off most of the
Council. I'd be in the minority and
on my way to the grave. I wish --
INARA
(leaving)
I haven't time to wish.
COUNCILOR
I thought Companions weren't allowed
to take lovers.
Inara stops one last time.
INARA
He's not my lover.
COUNCILOR
He must be an extraordinary captain,
then.
INT. SERENITY - DINING AREA
A stash of weapons -- guns, knives, grenades -- is laid out on the dining
room table. Zoe and Wash are strapping on as many as they can. . . . .

The shooting script of War Stories: one version is available on the Wiki http://www.fireflywiki.org/109.html

Its significance, of course, is to emphasise the weakness of the Councilor's status, which brings us close to topic. Serra appears to be establishing a network of people who have potential for power rather than those in the first rank; the politically embattled, the young, the nouveau riche.

I never really got the impression that he was mean spirited, just a bit of a newbie like the other guy's son later on. He just slipped up in what to say because he was embarrassed about the whole situation and the fact that he just made a fool of himself asking her to stay with him. You can see on his face after he says the line that he realises it was a bad move on his part and is just further embarrassed.

Ohhh...that's an interesting thought. Of course Atherton Wing doesn't fit the profile, and it's not clear she knew about the Councillor's weakness given that she tried to solicit her aid...

Jayne, your mouth is talkin. Might want to look into that.

Very interesting theory. Does make me wonder if that's Inara's policy or Guild policy.

From this perspective, Wing is nouveau riche - socially inept, possibly uneducated by the standards of the elite, and shunned by its nobility.

Or possibly a task given to Serra by the True Alliance faction?

Like you've never been young and stupid? I'm thinking he was a first-timer if you know what I mean by FIRST...

He was probably the son of someone VERY influencial on Persephone. A girl does what she can to survive in the big bad verse, even grapple with a dweeb from time to time.

Funny thing about being a companion - it's more about pleasing the client and giving them their money's worth in order to obtain repeat business. I only hope that his getting all embarassed doesn't mean he won't recommend her.

And this is even more interesting. I'd always assumed Inara had gone loose cannon, was fleeing something - but what if she was sent out to do some grassroots work for the Guild, making contacts? Gauche, naive, easily swayed people with money to burn... young, soon-to-inherit sons in particular. (An older generation might be more canny, and perhaps put off by her mode of transportation).

I wonder if it's possible to invest in the Guild as an organisation, and if so what the Guild wants the cash for? I imagine it gets plenty from its day-to-day operations, it could only be seeking extra for something big. Obviously, not all her choices fit the profile - but then, there have to be some perks in the trip for her, too. But many of them do.

She didn't bank on falling head over heels for Tight-Pants, though.

I've been both, and the latter far too many times.

Actually that was a very effective and well directed scene; it made us feel his akwardness and insecurity in the face of this lovely woman, and let us into the sometimes not so joyous moments of Inara's profession when dealing with younger clients and hurt feelings.

I called him a loser to see if anyone would come to his defense, and maybe get a lively thread goin'. It worked.

Been there Chrisisall

America loves a winner!

While Inara might 'prefer things w/ a few miles on them', she certainly does tend to favor breaking in the young, dweeby sons of affluent, powerful men.

Curious, that is.
