Incidentally, I subscribe to the Washington theory. I realize it's boring, but I'm kind of the boring type, and while I like the idea of a nickname, I woulda thunk his wife would call him by his actual name.

As for Jerry Lee? If he had said it, I just assumed Jerry Lee was a reference to some hotshot famous pilot, and Mal was congratulating him--y'know, like if you were ... I dunno, like, if you were a hockey player, and your captain referred to you as Gretzky, even though your name was really Ben.

My 10 yr. came up last year...did not even cross my mind to go. Not only was I a chessclub/star treak/heavy metal/stephen king weirdo...but my friends and I started our own club...The Sci-Fi Fantasy Horror club, which incorporated all the geek interests in literature, movie and gaming forms....not so affectionately known by the general populace of the school as The Satanist Club. i think you're all crazy to get this worked up over his name.

imdb does its cast posts from production material - that makes it as official as anything we have.

the only way to undo that would be a conflicting statement in the show - which isn't happening any time soon.

jerry lee warren - yeah it's a crappy name - but he's a texan - `least the actor is, and texans often have crappy names. that's why he goes by wash.

maybe he was adirty kid. looked like a surfer when he came on board - maybe he eschewed the shower until mal got pissed and yelled at him to "wash!"

least thats my theory.

Yeah, not a big deal either way. I feel that anything that's not said on the show itself isn't necessarily canon. IMDB is good, but not infallible by any means.

If "Jerry Lee Warren" were correct it would mean Wash and Kaywinnit Lee "Kaylee" Frye have the same middle name. That's a little odd, but not that unlikely a choice since Anglo and Chinese cultures dominate in the "New West."

Kaylee is my favorite character too, by the way. Not just because I have a huge crush on her.

That is a factor, however.

I have OMR on my computer right now and I keep listening to that scene over and over again. I hear "Jerry Lee" (very clearly); however, I'm now convinced that the statment Mal makes is directed at Kaylee. Mainly so because of her following line. But he does say "Jerry Lee". Perhaps a blooper?

Though, I do agree with Matt, the character is fictional. I'm thinkin' some people are developing an unhealthy attachment. Star Trek fanatics come to mind.

By way of backing my opinion, I can tell you almost the exact moment I thought he was a good James Bond. I don't remember which movie it was, but I think it was the first one he was in. There was a firefight going on, lots of automatic weapons fire, and Bond was behind cover, reloading his weapon. While he's looking down at the weapon, a bullet ricochets off the wall, and he just tilts his head away, still looking down at what he's doing.

It could be a slip on Nathan Fillion’s part, or a slip on Mals part, or a slip on Nathan’s part left to be explained as a slip on Mal’s part. Or it could be that Wash’s name is Jerry Lee, regardless that is what was said.

The way the camera is used implies that Mal was talking to Wash

Wash: We got it! (Mal regards Wash, and the console around him) It’s not pretty but we can steer enough to turn the hell around.
Mal(Facing directly at Wash, head pointed to him, eyes on him): Nice work Jerry Lee.

Sorry guys but he was talking to Wash, you can say that it was just Nathan messing up, but he said Jerry Lee, and he said it to Wash.
