I posted this awhile back but I can't find the thread, so here is the text of the narrations and the episodes they were in:

ttj - book
bw - book
omr - book
jt - book
oog - mal1
sd - mal1
safe - mal2, followed by previously
ariel - mal2
ws - none, starts with a previously
ois - none, starts with a previously
serenity - none

scifi uk airings:

trash - none, starts with a previously

Mal : Here's how it is: Earth got used up, so we terraformed a whole
new galaxy of Earths, some rich and flush with the new technologies,
some not so much. Central Planets, them was formed the Alliance, waged
war to bring everyone under their rule; a few idiots tried to fight
it, among them myself. I'm Malcolm Reynolds, captain of Serenity. Got
a good crew: fighters, pilot, mechanic. We even picked up a preacher,
and a bona fide companion. There's a doctor, too, took his genius
sister out of some Alliance camp, so they're keeping a low profile.
You got a job, we can do it, don't much care what it is.

Mal : Here's how it is: The Earth got used up, so we moved out and
terraformed a whole new galaxy of Earths, some rich and flush with the
new technologies, some not so much. The Central Planets, them was
formed the Alliance, waged war to bring everyone under their rule; a
few idiots tried to fight it, among them myself. I'm Malcolm Reynolds,
captain of Serenity. Shes a transport ship, Firefly class. Got a good
crew: fighters, pilot, mechanic. We even picked up a preacher for some
reason, and a bona fide companion. There's a doctor too, took his
genius sister out of some Alliance camp, so they're keeping a low
profile, you understand. You got a job, we can do it, don't much care
what it is.

Book : After the Earth was used up, we found a new solar system and
hundreds of new Earths were terra formed and colonized. The central
planets formed the Alliance and decided all the planets had to join
under their rule. There was some disagreement on that point. After the
War, many of the Independents who had fought and lost drifted to the
edges of the system, far from Alliance control. Out here, people
struggled to get by with the most basic technologies; a ship would
bring you work, a gun would help you keep it. A captain's goal was
simple: find a crew, find a job, keep flying.

rhuttner, you're our hero! Thanks heaps! Bein' a relative newbie, this is a real discovery, of sorts. I had no idea, why didn't they include it in the dvd's? Not like I needed it to get the show, but it surely sounds cool.

Thanks, Rhuttner, I had completely forgotten about those intros. I guess it's okay they're not on the DVD's. I kinda got tired of hearing "Into every generation...yada yada yada" at the beginning of every episode of Buffy for the first couple of seasons.

hear hear! Agreed. Into every generation, we already know what happens so shaddup!

Big help on t he voiceovers though. Nice backstory to help people understand what's happening.

For some reason, I recall someone having told me that when they watched it on TV, something had been mentioned about how the only two surviving civilizations were the Chinese and USA. I know a lot of people that I've showed the dvd to that I've had to explain that to myself, but I never recall ever being informed of that by the dvd's themselves. Am I forgetting something? Is it somewhere in the commentary? Or was it on TV to begin with?

It was never explained in the show itself. There were things about the concept and characters of Firefly that were on the net before the show premiered. The merging of China and the US was explained there. It is also mentioned in the commentary by Joss in either Serenity or The Train Job.

Oh Rat, thanks for those! I'd never heard them either, but now I have. Shiny! I do wish they'd been on the DVDs just so I would have known what it was like. Oh well...

Much obliged Chrisisall

I've seen video clips of the intro segments on WinMX, too. In fact, I have them, just I'm not often logged on. They run about 6 to 8 megs each. Look for files titled "Firefly - MalIntro" or something similar.

MAL "You only gotta scare him."
JAYNE "Pain is scary..."

Ok, I'm fairly certain there was a fanmade trailer for Serenity the movie which made use of one of these Mal voiceovers, but now I cannot find it.

Anyone have any idea what I'm talking about?

Thanks.

Yes, there was - it's GREAT - much better than the OFFICIAL first trailer (perhaps not the new one!), IMHO. Not sure where to find it here, but it was posted here.

You know, those voiceovers could have gone on throught the season like Buffy Season 1. Yes annoying, but it reminded you of the basis of the story. Maybe they could've changed every so often to keep it fresh.

I think I heard the Book one. It's for the "Safe" episode, is it not?

I'm so happy, I think I'll keep those file samples in my little Firefly collection-thanks

For those who embrace the trivial, there was yet another voiceover, but it was never broadcast.

The original 'test' pilot that was initially declined by Fox (but was later tweaked to become the pilot that we all recognize and love) had the following intro performed by none other than Joss himself, affecting somewhat of an "Old Fashion" accent, with nothing but each sentence in white letters on a black background as he spoke (then cuts straight to Mal, Zoe, and Jayne scavaging that ship's cargo.)

The War to Unite the Planets was six years
done, and the victorious Alliance was spreading
its control further and further throughout the
galaxy.

Those who had fought for independence and
so bloodily lost had no choice but to live by
Alliance law.

Some never would, and those few found
themselves drifting... flying to the furthest
reaches of the galaxy, to the worlds less civilized
some barely settled where the Alliance might not
control their lives.

These were hard worlds, and work was where
you found it. Those who got by lived by a simple
creed.

Any job, anywhere.

. I'm known to some.

I remember that one - in the leaked copy of the pilot. I'd go ahead and call it a 'Southern' accent that Joss uses :)

Nice bit of trivia - well done!

I'm hoping they'll have a NEW voiceover for the Sci-Fi release - so far, no voiceover, but I wouldn't expect it for the pilot (even if Joss DID do one). Makes more sense after Serenity parts I and II air.

Being from the South myself, I just couldn't quite get to callin' it that (), but yep, I think you're right, I think that's what he's shooting for. He uses a lot of central Alabama intonations (but a couple of words indicate that Joss hasn't spent a heck of a lot of time in Dixie, lately at least).

Yeah, the only thing I was upset about on the dvd's, was the fact that none of the episodes had the intros. I still have 90% of them on tape, but still.
