Rewatching Objects in Space I am curious about 3 things.
Did anyone notice that while Kaylee's describing River's phenomenal gun play during the War Stories Episode that everyone is displaying some measure of shock accept Book. He doesn't even seemed shocked at the notion that someone could fire a gun that quickly and kill three people without looking - on purpose. Why does this not surprise him? Has he seen or heard of people with this ability before?
Also when the camera pans throught the innards of the ship to show River listening a deck below in that odd way of hers, it kinda' struck me, was she listening to the others deciding her fate, or listening to Jubal Early two floors above? Wasn't she supposed to be locked in her room? How'd she get out?
Last, (maybe)when Early and Simon are searching the ship for River and they begin searching the shuttles, on leaving the empty shuttle Early says, "Her room's not saying a damn thing." This after the comment about "Is it still her room if its empty?" Is it a misplaced scene? The shuttle they are leaving looks like Inara's shuttle with its red and gold decor. But they have not entered Inara's shuttle yet. If he is not talking about Inara than who?

Looking for answers.

Hmmm. He's not gasping with shock, but he does react. It's a bit subtle and the way the scene cuts to and from him you need to watch carefully. As Kaylee describes how River shot the three men, Book lowers his head and looks down, then when he's next in shot he's got his hands clasped together in front of his mouth.

I'm not sure whether I'd say he's not surprised. I think he looks distressed at the thought of River killing someone.

Depending on what you think Book is (Alliance office, former Fed, criminal, whatever), you could probably read his reaction to support whatever theory you support.

ooh question!

anyone have any insight as to what it means when River sees the glimpse of Inara and Mal?

Inara: I'm a big girl, you can tell me.
Mal (in husky emotional voice) None of it means a damn thing.

i have a few theories myself but i'd like to hear others ^^

also whats up with the River/Jubal scene where Jubal freaks out "you'll be wanting to shut up now little girl!"

this and Message are my two favorite episodes.

also on more Rivery things.

in Bushwhacked River seems to know whats going on with the Reaver she says "no johnny dont" i think when she wakes up screaming when he wakes up.

also just curious does anyone know why River decided to take a nap on Tracy's coffin?

i'll post more later.

River takes a nap on Tracey's coffin because it's "comfortable", because he's comfortably reposing therein, not dead.

I'd like to understand the Inara/Mal comments too. I assume they have something to do with their relationship, but I can't quite figure out what they mean. The best I've got so far is "I'm a big girl, just tell me [you love me]," and "None of [our time together on this ship] means a damn thing [to you in the end]." If anyone has a better fit, please tell!

---------------------------------------------------
Early: Where'd she go?

Simon: I can't keep track of her when she's NOT incorporeally possessing a spaceship, don't look at me --

Another thing about that episode that got me puzzled... At the very end of the episode with Jubal, is it me, or does it seem like there's a reflection of something in his helmet? It probably isn't Serenity, but it's definatly something. Anyone got an idea of what?

Am I dreaming?

I'm thinking it's his ship on remote control. It is returning to get him, and he survives to stalk the crew another day.

Just my silly idea.

See I'm wondering why they didn't take any measures to destroy, confiscate, or at least immobilize Jubal's shuttle afterwards. I seem to remember that it's not there as the ship continues flying onward.

Objects in Space used to be the episode I liked the least, since I didn't much care for Jubal. After re-watching it, though, my opinion did a 180 and I now really enjoy it. Still not among my favourites (Out of Gas, The Message, and Serenity rank there), but nonetheless quite good. KF

just bumpin this aged post coz there are actually some nice questions raised...

as for Book's reactions to the River shooting - i think he's playing down - so no/one will say 'hey an' you were pretty handy there yourself preacher!' which leads me to my next question...

just what has Book told Jayne???
- since Jayne seems to regard Book as a man of action - see OiS etc.

wytchcroft, maybe it's just because they've worked out together, that Jayne sees Book as less of a "sit and do nothing" person. Also, remember War Stories where Book shoot that one guy in the kneecap?

Glad you bumped this, Wytchcroft.

One of the previous posters posed the question (several years ago...) about Mal and Inara's thoughts that River picked up on.

I don't think that "Go ahead tell me, I'm a big girl" and "None of it means a damn thing" necessarily are about each other. It seems to me that River picked up on deep emotions/thoughts from the crew members. Not what they were thinking at the time but more some unconscious thoughts that "define" the character.

"None of it means a damn thing" seems to describe Mal's outlook on life.

I think that "Go ahead tell me, I'm a big girl" is something from Inara's past and has nothing to do with Mal.

yes... it almost sounds like she was getting bad news - so more evidence that she might be sick...

I'm not a believer of the Sick/Dying Inara theory. Something's going on with her but that just doesn't feel right.

I have my own theory about the "Go ahead..." line which I will be working into a fic at some point in the near future.

i think there's evidence for it - but it's not a likeable theory - not one i would use myself - but the kind of thing a show might easily go for nonetheless...

I'm of the opinion that Inara's thoughts are her longing for Mal to finally be honest with her about his feelings for her and Mal's are his believing that he cant be honest with her as he cant give her what she needs. But that is just my personal take on it.

This is just my theory on the Mal/Inara vision River hd, and in no way is it any more valid than any others, but I sense Mal's saying none of it matters, [sic] I think that is his general outlook on life. Mal had nothing after the war, but refused to just lie down and die, and is plotting forward without a guiding star. I think the Inara comment might also be along the same lines.

I'm gonna agree with Vader on this one.

I think River was reading the things the characters were feeling at the time of the "reading".

===
Simon: "I'd be there right now."

He was talking about "there".
---
Kaylee's blank face.

Maybe she doesn't relate to Simon's story very well. *shrugs*
---
Jayne: "I got stupid, the money was too good."

Could be that's the first thing that enters Jayne's mind each time he sees River after Ariel.
---
Book: "I don't give half a hump if you're innocent or not. So, where does that put *you*."

Book was talking about a "bad guy"(Jayne) taking Orders, and thought for a sec of why *he's* taking Orders.
---
River "feeling" Wash and Zoe.

Nuff said.
===

The other characters seem to fit this theory.
