TRS80

Hi all,

I've made SVCD MPEG2 copies of the missing episodes from the VHS tape I acquired recently. Please bear in mind the quality of the VHS wasn't all that good to start with. On a scale of Bad/OK/Good/Excellent I'd rate these as OK.

It is my hope that those who download these files will share them with others via whatever means available. If you can point me to evidence on the messageboard which shows you share files with others to help out, please contact me directly using the email address below. I have setup one special login with a faster connection and no timeout so that you get priority access to the files so you can share them too :)

RULES FOR DOWNLOADING PLEASE READ!!!
------------------------------------

4 users max / 1 login per IP address allowed

10Kb/sec max upload per user

idle time-out 5 min (sit idle on the connection this long and you'll get auto booted)

session time-out 24 hours (if you've been connected to the server this long you'll get auto booted, even if you're actively xferring data) This should give you time enough to download ONE of the THREE EPISODES available. After that you'll have to try to get in again to download another of the 3 episodes.

PASV xfers and RESUME are supported

DO NOT HAMMER THE SERVER!! You know the server is going to be very busy...be patient! THE SERVER WILL AUTO BAN you for 72 hours if you attempt to connect MORE THAN ONCE EVERY MINUTE! CHECK THE SETTINGS IN YOUR FTP CLIENT TO MAKE SURE IT WILL COMPLY WITH THIS REQUIREMENT!!

If when trying to connect you see this in the status window of your ftp client:

STATUS:>Connecting to ftp server ftp.hitechgadgets.net:21
STATUS:>Socket connected. Waiting for welcome message...
ERROR:>Control connection closed.

it means you've been auto banned from the server.

You can either click this link:

ftp://browncoat:serenityvalley@ftp.hitechgadgets.net

to download it using a browser (not recommended), or use an ftp client:

ftp.hitechgadgets.net port 21
username: browncoat
password: serenityvalley

Enjoy!!

I suspect the server is just overloaded and refusing additional connections; I am getting "Host is unreachable" errors from my FTP client. Guess I'll have to wait until I get home tonight and search for it on Kazaa (unless the bit torrent link goes up first...any luck, physics chick?)

I'm downloading Heart of Gold right now, BitTorrent should be up (knock on wood) by ~8 pm PST. I'll get The Message after that and put it up tomorrow morning (or, my fiance will do it late tonight since he goes to bed at 4 am), and Trash after that (I'm assuming this one is a MUCH better copy than I have - no ICQ noises! - but I still do have that old one for BitTorrent if people want it, so it goes last).

Oh, I should add the page:
http://grove.susurrous.net/trash.html
will have the links on it when they're ready. It's got the old version of Trash and the Kaylee fan vid (with authour's permission) up there now.

Okay--I'm working on downloading the eps and then re-uploading them to my site. However, it looks like it may take a day or so (8 hours to download each 800meg file, even on my work's t1 line. "Whoa," she says, using her best Neo voice). But as soon as I get them uploaded, I'll let you guys know!

Bit Torrent is a program that makes it easier to distribute files on the Internet by allowing those who have already downloaded a file to help by automatically sending the file (or at least a part of it) to those who are still trying to download it. A little bit like those peer-to-peer file swapping applications like Naptster/Morpheus/Kazaa. You can download it here for Windows:

http://osdn.dl.sourceforge.net/bittorrent/bittorrent-3.2.1.exe

For the Bit Torrent program, you can just right click on the link I gave and select 'save as...' and then double-click on the file after it downloads to install the program. However, you have to wait until PhysicsChick uploads the new files tonight before you can get the new episodes (but you can always test it by downloading Trash from the link PhysicsChick provided, if you don't already have it)

You'll really see it at it's most powerful once downloading hits it's highest rate. I've had BitTorrent downloads come in at over 300 k/s... you almost never see that on Kazaa.

That was pretty much my first reaction to reading TRS's post. Just was not expecting to see that the remaining unaired eps were available. Holy Crap!!! We needs it...it's our precious!!! Damn the fact that I have to go to work in an hour. Means I won't get to start downloading until sometime tomorrow. Tomorrow's gonna be a damn good day though. Hopefully two new eps of Firefly and season four of Buffy the Vampire Slayer on DVD. Woo-Hoo!!

I'm afraid the files I've made available are all I'm going to have time for in the next 2 months at least. Real Life(tm) is keeping me pretty busy.

Making the MPEGs was easy...I just clicked a few things and walked away. DVD authoring is a lot more time consuming than that!

Does anyone know who runs "Hello Cowgirl"? That's where I downloaded "Trash", and I would love to see "The Message" and "Heart of Gold" there. I cannot use BitTorrent at work (too many proxies and firewalls) and the DSL at my apartment is of extremely s(low) quality. OH, well, I guess I am just too impatient! I truely love Firefly and still can't believe it was cancelled! I feel like a beloved family member has died. I grew up on science fiction, and love Star Trek only because that's what it is. Compared to Firefly, Enterprise is a disgrace. Please, "Hello Cowgirl", distribute "The Message" and "Heart of Gold"!!!

Any chance of getting these episodes in lower quality... like maybe the 300-400 neighborhood? I'm gonna be getting the DVDs whent they come out, so I don't really need them in uber high quality right now... and my DSL slows to a crawl when I have to upload at the same time I'm downloading, like with Bittorrent.

Once I have them downloaded, if I can open them in Quicktime Pro, I can see about making smaller versions and uploading them for folks who don't intend to burn them to VCD.

I have HoG downloading via BitTorrent and "The Message" from LJC's site. Thanks.

I'm a mac person as well, and I wouldn't use QuickTime Pro for this application. Instead, consider ffmpegX, available from http://homepage.mac.com/major4. It's very fast for VCD, does avi reasonably well, and has DVD/SVCD features also. I use it frequently to make XSVCDs of Buffy, Angel, etc. direct from captured digital source and the results are pretty good.

Finally, I have a DVD burner and some media. I think with a little hacking of the content I should be able to get DVDs made relatively rapidly with DVD Studio Pro, and without Tmpgenc transcoding. Making DVDs from SVCD dubs of middlin' quality VHS tape is a little like choosing the wine to serve with a Big Mac, but it would be nice to be able to watch them in that format, too. So, if TRS80 doesn't mind, I would be willing to sling DVDs at cost to such browncoats as wants them.
