I saw 2 of the 3 paid test screenings over the summer. I also managed to see a press screening and a sneak preview during the few weeks in September before the movie opened. I've since seen the movie about 5 or 6 more times, and I've taken many people with me who have all enjoyed the movie. Some of these folks were complete newcomers to the 'verse. And I intend to continue.
Why?
Because it is a great movie! It is exciting and suspenseful and funny. It is very smartly written and directed, wonderfully acted, and beautifully crafted. It has a strong story and engaging characters that break away from predictable and trite formulas and stereotypes. And the movie speaks to wide variety of audiences - people who love sci-fi enjoy the movie, and people who love good storytelling but typically dislike sci-fi can enjoy this movie. And on top of everything, it is simply a fun night at the movies.
In short, "Serenity" rocks!!!

Don't great me wrong, i am an original Fan, die hard from the beginning and all that, but i can see where the critics are coming from. Its the anti-napoleon dynamite. There is just so much plot. I dragged my girlfriend to BDM, and she just was mind boggled. She couldn't absorb it all, and wasn't prepared for it.

ROCK ON SERENITY!

I didn't know what to expect when I was going to see Serenity as I never caught the episodes on TV and went on the recommendation of a friend.

I came out after watching it and said, "It makes star wars look like all the crap that's ever been crapped on gods green earth."

If I hadn't been sat down whilst watching it someone would have had to hit me with a defibrillator. I now own the Firefly series and since I got it there's always been one of the DVD's in my player.

I've been watching the show from way back and I still don't know where the heck he came from.

Joss went with two new characters to move the plot of the story. The blue hand guys would have needed more time than he had, so he created the Operative. Mr. Universe is new the way that lots of people in that 'verse would be new to us.

I agree with that, but I think the main problem was that he was introduced as sort of "part of the gang", and a lot of people thought "hey, I thought we already knew everybody in the gang!?!". Obviously he was a necessary plot device and all that, but I didn't really see the point of making the crew seem so chummy with him.

How did they meet him in the first place? Did he hack into Serenity's computer and start having a conversation with all of them? He just doesn't seem like the type that the crew would usually be friends with.

Spoiler for novelization:

According to the novelization, Mr. Universe went to flight school with Wash and was the only that graduated higher than Wash (and that's only because he hacked into the computer and changed all his test scores)

see, I don't get why anyone would believe we know everyone Mal & Zoe & Wash ever worked with...
the gorrum TV show was cut short!
We don't know MOST of the people they ever worked with...
we never got to see MOST of the shows we should have gotten to see before the movie....

so when Wash says 'let's call Mr. Universe' and everyone on board knows who he means, then obviously the audience is supposed to know that our BDHs know him, like him, and have worked with him before.
The first time Zoe speaks to Mr. Universe he makes a joke

don't you go falling in love with me...

no one would joke around like that w/Zoe (who can kill you with her pinky) if they were NOT a close friend...

the fans of 'Firefly' need to stop assuming that the aborted partial season we got told us anything more than the tip of a HUGE iceberg....

sorry....rant over.

Okay, I totally see your point, but my point is why would he be so close to Zoe in the first place? How did he become such a good friend to all of them when they haven't even been to his home before (in the movie he had to give them directions to get through the ionic cloud)?

The fact that they haven't been to his home world before leads me to think that they couldn't have seen him in person that often before either, since he hardly seems like the type that would go to the planets they go to, if he ever gets out anyway. Which leads me to think that their friendship must have been built up mainly by talking to each other via videophone, and do you really think Mal and Zoe would be so trusting of somebody that they've rarely met and only got to know in this way?

In fact, it's exactly that quote you gave that shows how close they all are that bothers me the most. Nobody on the ship except for Wash could get away with talking to Zoe like that, yet here's this guy that can take such liberties and Zoe gives him a warm smile. It doesn't make sense! Even if they had met him often before and had lots of video nights and great parties together, I really don't think that Mr Universe is the type of person that Zoe would like.

Of course, it's like you said, we hardly know Mal and Zoe, or anybody else, so maybe they would be friends with somebody like that after all, but by the evidence presented in the series I don't think Mr Universe would have a chance of becoming as close to them as he apparently is in the movie.

Just to be clear, I'm not bitching about the film. There's been a lot of that going on and I don't want to be one of those people. I'm just bitching about Mr Universe, or rather the type of close friendship he apparently had with the crew. It just seems out of character - not just to Mal and Zoe, but also the whole "feel" of the series.

don't get me wrong Khyron, I don't think you are bashing the film...
but my point was that rather than wanting evidence that the personal joking was warrented (wanting proof that Mr. U was a close friend)
I think you should instead take the personally joking as the proof that there is this close personal past relationship that we just don't happen to know about.
Joss introduced this character to us as though he was obviously known to everyone...so I think we need to say 'hey, any friend of our BDHs is a friend of ours' without needing further evidence that he is what they believe him to be.

I still hope that we'll get back stories...
not 'prequels' but like in the episode Out of Gas I hope we'll find out about Book's past, and I hope that we'll find out that Mr. U actually rode on Serenity at one point...before he got set up on his little moon....(because I'm thinking that only someone who actually had been onboard once could be that good of a friend)

Him staying on the ship for a while is of course a plausible explanation (one that I didn't think of), although if he did stay on the ship, I don't think he'd be there too long. He seems like the type that would've just wanted to go from A to B.

But obviously it's best if we get some backstories, just to know for sure. So let's hope we get them (and preferably as part of a new season on TV - that could take a while to happen, though).

Hey, I know, since there's this petition fad going on here at the moment, let's petition Joss to give us Mr Universe's backstory! He'll undoubtedly bow to the pressure of seeing a list of signatures and be forced to ingeniously include the backstory in Wonder Woman in some way. Problem solved! Khyron's a genius!
