In other episodes she also has a second pair of overalls (most notably in 'Safe') with a purple mouse on the top left breast pocket.

I just paused the DVD and saw that too. Very cool. I wonder if anyone has ever taken the time to make a good Kaylee costume with all the little details needed? It would be a cool thing to see.

It occured to me that 86 million miles, spacially, isn't all that far - you know, about the distance from the Sun to the Earth-that-is.

That's our lovely Firefly writers. They're great with the stories, but when it comes to the science of space, uh...

Unless maybe the blue hands man came from a
planet near to the ship they were in. hmm.

I have a strong astronomy background and I too felt this was a gross error. However, after I saw the film preview I see now I did not know all the facts.

if you want to know now I'll place it in spoiler text.

Select to view spoiler:

The film states clearly that the 'verse is all contained within 1 star system. The planets near the star are the core worlds and those on fringes (mostly moons) are rim worlds. This makes a trip of 86 million miles totally viable.

However, it still leaves the terrible problem that a star system with 100's of earth worlds is utterly implausable if you subscribe to modern threories of planet formation.

Also at odds with the film explaination is that planets need to be in the "sweet Spot" near the star to be an earth. This range is around 89-99 million miles from our sun. Earth is nested at 93 million. There are actually far more science holes in the firefly verse than the perceved mis-statement from the hands of blue.

I was just watching Bushwhacked again and was surprised to see a tiny detail I never had before: Wash putting his hands up (in an oh-so-Wash-like way) when the Alliance Commander first boards the ship. That scene is great for the way each character has their own way of presenting themselves. I guess I've always been busy focusing on Mal that I never caught it...

"Not a blooper, but at 12:22 into "The Message", right before River calls Simon a boob, Jayne (with letter in mouth), walks by Simon and mutters something. Sounds like he's calling Simon a hack or something"

I've listened a couple times. It sounds like the rattle of a loose deck grating to me. Anyone else?

Well I finally caught on to something just today and I feel silly.

It involves Two-Fry's nice hat. I never got the fact that as Mal is talking to Patience and Two-Fry he was actually speaking in code to Jayne.

So many people get all caught up in the misdirect of Jayne sighting Mal into the crosshairs of the rifle scope they loose sight of the fact that what Jayne is actually doing is using the sight as binoculars of-a-sort to observe what's going down. This, coupled with the transmitter in his ear, allows him to understand the gist of events twixt Patience+Crew and Mal+Zoe.

Knowing this, Mal prepares for the fight by saying "That's quite a Rifle. Boy must be your best shot to carry that" Which translates to Jayne as "Two-Fry is the one you need to eleminate ASAP, I will identify him in a moment for you" Then the line "Two-Fry, nice hat" translates into "Two-Fry is wearing the fancy hat. Shoot him now"

Ok, i admit i didnt read the whole thread... sorry :(

Could someone tell me where in 'Serenity' it shows that they wrote the name of the ship? I always liked the idea that, unlike every other sci-fi ship, they didnt write S E R E N I T Y in big letters on the side because it would identify them...... now i'm sad!

In the Pilot episode, after they land on Persephone, there is a still shot of the Bridge of the ship from the ground. If you look carefully you can see the name. It's also one of the random pictures that will appear on this website in the upper left corner of your screen as you move from page to page here.

Maybe it's just me, but ...

At the end of "Trash", an unclothed Mal steps onto the ship; Wash and Zoe are trying not to look down or laugh, and as Wash steps away, you can hear him say something to Zoe that sounds like, "He's Jewish!"

Anyone else hear that?

I have yet again noticed a new thing I hadn't noticed before.

In the flashback of the Battle of Du Khang, Tracey refers to the Lt who has lost his mind as being 100% ok and having "10 pretty little fingers like the most of the men"

By phrasing it that way, Tracey is indicating that not everybody in the Platoon still has 10 fingers. Thus the rigors of combat.

It was a very subtle line.

At the end of "Safe", in the kitchen, Jayne takes a dinner roll out of the basket and passes it to Zoe. A second later, he reaches for another roll while she's passin the basket along.

Last week I noticed the reason he reached for a second dinner roll: River snitched his while he was passing the basket to Zoe!

It is indeed Early. If you listen to the commentary for OIS, Joss states clearly that it is Early's voice we hear. You'll also notice that River sleeps through the other voices but snaps awake at Early's voice.

the reason she snaps awake at the sound of Early's voice and only the sound of Early's voice is because the rest of the murmurs are of the crew on the ship - people who she's familiar with (her family). Early is the one who is not familiar.

Other cameos: in HoG the madame is played by the same actress who was a pro dominatrix on CSI.

There're some really obvious things that I don't know why I didn't notice before... But the thing is, I keep noticing more and more details every time I rewatch a given episode.

Anyway, here are a couple:

- In Serenity: during the battle, it wasn't until the second or third viewing of it that I saw the little scene where Mal kisses the cross on his necklace before running out.
- In War Stories: I always thought Niska was killed during the fight... that "I wish I'd killed that bastard" line afterwards didn't tip me off enough until the second time I watched it.

Those're the only two that come to mind at the moment. I'm gonna have to watch for the Hans Solo figure next time. KF

Serenity - Wash holding the imaginery throttle after the Reaver chase scene.

Trash - When Mal's talking to YoSafBridg on the way to the drop point, you can totally see her sneak Mal's gun out of his holster.

Objects in Space - The fact that River reads everyone's mind, except Kaylee's.

There are other things too, I just can't think of them.
Stuff I have yet to spot:
Early's ship in Trash. Apparently you can see it from the window of the the floating island.

RIVER6213

I noticed that in the episode "Shindig" when the crew was passing that store window with all the women showing off the store dresses, I noticed that the street-shot with the buildings in the background, was the exact shot (just dressed up a little) that they used in the movie Starship Troopers.

I also noticed in "The Train Robbery" The uniforms that those soldiers were wearing in that one railcar where the medicine was, just happen to be exactly the same uniforms the soldiers wore in the movie Starship troopers.

Also, in the episode called "Trash", where they showed one of the floating homes, I couldnt help noticing that one of the ships flying in the background was an SR71 Blackbird spy plane.

I also forgot to add:

In the episode "Ariel" that CGI Helicopter/Ambulance, that Kaylee and Wash put together, well, the body/frame comes from a Soviet MI-24 attack chopper.

River and the Letter(s) from School:

In 'Serenity', Simon explains that he received a letter from River containing a coded message, then went off to rescue her.

In 'Safe', Simon confronts his parents with a whole *handful* of letters indicating something is amiss.

And a riddle for you: There's also a scene in which pseudo html/javascript code is displayed on one of the computer readouts. In which episode and where does this occur?

[Edit] Awesome thread, this one.

Maybe both ships fly in the same direction and the Reaver just fly a bit faster (make a little pass to scare them a bit or to check them like sharks do it).

In space you can turn a ship in any direction without changing the course as long no propulsion is in effect.

Great thread! Funny how we could all watch the same thing and see so many different elements.

The only thing I have to contribute is a theory I read somewhere else a long time ago about the whole Zoe necklace controversy.

Theory why the commentary was NOT wrong is that the flashbacks in OoG represent Mal's memories/visions/hallucinations which would be a bit blurry and confused based on the fact he's shot and all. Could be he's so used to seeing Zoe with her commitment necklace that it's just how he envision's her now.

Of course the other theory is that this is just a continuity shift/blooper/whatever like having Wash all calm in the Serenity pilot but turning him into a Jerry Lewis panic in The Message. The costumer may have been told early on that the intent of Zoe's necklace was as a "marriage bond" but the director of OoG and perhaps Gina Torres were not told the same thing.

Just a little thing, but during another viewing of Safe last night I finally had to point out to my wife & son the throw-away line that Alpha Hick hears, telling him that Simon is a doctor. It goes by so fast you almost have to be looking for it, but I was surprised they still hadn't "gotten" it. Guess they need a couple dozen more viewings.

I just watched Serenity Parts 1 and 2 on dvd again... Don't know how many times... When Mal is giving his speech in the kitchen when it shows the view of Serenity moving across the screen, you look in the back windows... it shows the characters standing in the dining room through the windows... Funny thing is, when you mag the screen and study it. People in the window are approximately in the same place where the characters are in the next scene... But different clothing... It appears that there is a person in a tan jacket, with a white shirt and 4 in hand tie standing in the place where Kaylee is standing in the scene. Mal looks like he's in his spot... And Simon... I dunno... I thought that it was interesting...

heaps of things i didn't notice.
-The Train Job: when Mal, Zoe and Jayne are standing on the edge of the cliff before Serenity comes to save them, you can see the outline of a few moons or something in the sky.
-Serenity: Everytime i watch the opening scene, i notice another shot that i must ahve missed before.
there's heaps more, but i have a mental block. i'll add more when i can think of them.

I never realised how funny Simon actually is.
