Something odd in The Message

Did anyone else think this was rather odd:

River and Simon were walking about the station. A public place where people, including feds might see them. The fugitive alerts on them may even be posted on the station. Seems rather risky.

Also, in Serenity when Wash tried to outrun the Reavers he wanted Kaylee in the engine room. When she was in there she asked if he wanted to go for hard burn. He said not yet but to set it up.

In The Message, Kaylee was in her room and Wash went to hard burn without any prep. When outrunning another ship, shouldn't the engineer be in the engine room?

Other than those 2 things I thought it was a typical Firefly episode. In other words GREAT

Nifty highlighting technique.

I don't know about the first one, but about out running the ship without Kaylee in the engine room I guess it had to do with the whole 'Crazy Ivan' and the way Serenity manouvered in that one. In Serenity when they break atmo it looks like a nuclear explosion just went off. In The Message, they were just going pretty fast.

But Wash wanted her in the engine room before the thought of a Crazy Ivan came up. It just seems a little inconsistant.

i don't think they did a hard burn in "the message" i'd have to watch it again, but i don't remember seeing the engine in the back glow like it does when they go into a hard burn.

As to the first question, I didn't see much evidence of a significant Alliance presence on the station, so it may be that they knew it was low risk to be out and about (otherwise, they would *never* leave the ship at any time, in case a Fed happened to see them on some backwater planet)

He may not have actually done the hard burn, but he did say to get ready for hard burn, then hit something and everyone jerked like the ship moved faster. But in general I feel she should have been in the engine room.

In Safe, Simon was afraid to leave the ship on a backwater moon for fear of being spotted by a Fed. That was probably a lower risk than a station where they could have been picked up on security cameras. Plus it was an Alliance franchise post office at the least, station at the most. Greater chance that there was a fed there to check up on it.

regarding the station. if they were still making episodes they might have done something with that. perhaps the blue hand group would have gotten some info on simon and river being spotted at a station and they would follow the trail as best they could to find them.

My take on the first one, without having scene the ep, is that only a select few Feds actually have photos from which to ID River and Simon.

Oh, but wait, in OoG, when Mal says that Simon's birth date was on the cortex, did he mention that it was under a picture of his?

Hrmmm.

Ah well. We can put it off to consistencey sacrificed for story purposes, some elusive reason, and maybe Simon has become a bit more comfortable about venturing forth since we saw him in Safe and Jaynestown.

I didn't notice the discrepancies you mention but can understand your wonderin' about them. What bothered me most was: (SPOILER BELOW)

Why didn't the bad guys blow up Serenity (or at least try) after they were chased off? They knew the crew could ID them for illegal activity and they knew exactly where they were so I gotta ask, "whubba whoo, huh?"

Other than "cos then the show would be over and that's not gonna happen"? Probably because it never pays to follow up one illegal activity with another.

As for the burn question, having watched that scene quite a bit now (it's Washtastic!) he says "hard burn" in The Message, but in Serenity it's "full burn." I'm thinking that there might be a difference.

Right, could be (reaching to make sense of his beloved Space Western, he said:) "hard burn" is similar to an afterburner as used on an aircraft, i.e., it's an atmo flight mode trick.

Maybe, as is often the case, I should really just relax.

Having grown up on Marvel Comics, I have it in my head to always go for the "No-Prize" (once described as a box of anti-matter Crackerjacks). This was once a prize awarded for finding mistakes in the comics, but later became an award for finding them and coming up with plausible explanations for them.

Every show, over a long enough time line, is going to have some inconsistencies and to me it's most fun trying to reconcile them without breaking anything.

I am a sad, strange little man.

(every time I hear the episode title "The Message" the little sampler in my head plays "Don't push me 'cause I'm close to the... EDGE," etc. Am I showing my age here? Too old school?)

What she said. What they did in the pilot was diffent, in the pilot it went boom-go here it was constant, clearly a diffrent thing.
