As you all know, Star Trek has been a very present thing for nearly 40 years. Yeah, I know. The quality of the franchise hasn't always been the best. That's not what I'm addressing here. I may ramble, but stick with me.

The original series ran 1966-69. Then what? Syndication. Then the annimated series (1973). More syndication. Then the first movie in 1979, followed by several other movies (the sixth was in 1991). From 1987-1994 there was TNG, which had four of its own movies, bringing the movie total to 10. More series followed with DS9 from 1993-1999, Voyager from 1995-2001, and Enterprise from 2001-2005. Yeah, I know. You all know this already.

My point? What kept the whole thing alive between the end of the original series and the first movie and then all that followed? Two things (I'm not counting the annimated series, sorry): Conventions and books.

How does that pertain to Firefly?

Well, we have our first movie, and in a fraction of the time it took Star Trek to get there. Yay!! Also, many of you have seen our BDH's at conventions (lucky dogs), etc. What more could we want??

Books! Do you remember back in the '70s when you could find Star Trek books in nearly every place that sold books? They were almost always out there. I think their popularity was a major impetus for that firt movie.

So, when are we going to start seeing Firefly books on the shelves in stores?? I know there are a lot of really, really good fanfic works out there. Do you think anyone is going to try to get one published? I mean, how did those first ST books get out there if it weren't for fans who submitted their works.

Sure, it's great reading fanfics on the web. But, just imagine walking down the book/magainze isle in your favorite grocery store and seeing a Firefly novel on the rack.

I've rambled long enough. I want books!!!

I've mentioned on the forum this issue several times, and no one really can give me a good answer to it. I mean, Firefly has come and gone from 2002/2003 and no ones really published anything, which I find rather odd.

You are right about Star trek though. I grew up reading Star trek novels and about the time Star trek the Motion Picture came out in 1979, the shelves in stores were flowing over with ST novels, games, and there were ST clubs all over the place.

So I guess that I simply don't know whats going on, but maybe good things are headed our way soon....you never know.

I hear crickets...

I could be wrong but I'm sure that two Firefly/Serenity books have been confirmed.

I think however that this item has been denied by various sources - apparently it's not real.

On a side-note however, in the back of the Visual Companion for Serenity, there is an advertisement with the comment "And look for all-new original novels starring the Serenity crew, coming soon from Pocket Books" which is surely a sign that something is coming

I checked the US site and it's there, too, written by Keith R.A. DeCandido. Hopefully it is real.

I've posted this in other threads, but the question keeps popping up. There will be two novels set in the 'verse coming out in '06, from pocketbooks. That word is from Keith R. A. DeCandido, author of the movie novelization, who posts here (and on other fans sites) as KRAD. Right now, Joss is looking over the dozen or so submitted manuscripts for the two that will get his approval. KRAD and SF author Steven Brust have both submitted manuscripts. Whether their material will be chosen is up to Joss. As soon as Joss picks a manuscript, there will be final editing changes (no doubt based on his recommendations) and then the books will be sent of to the printing presses. To reiterate, the books have already been written, they just need to be selected and approved by Joss. So, they'll be coming pretty soon.

EDITED TO ADD: I remain doubtful that "Mirror Image" is one of those books. If memory serves, it's been on Amazon for a while and KRAD has said it's not his, it's just an error. Moreover, if the two Serenity novels have been chosen and are already up on Amazon, I find it surprising that KRAD hasn't made some sort of announcement--especially if his piece was chosen. The latest word, just a few weeks old, is what I mentioned above--Joss is still deciding on the manuscript and KRAD doesn't know if his submission will be chosen.

I'm a relatively new fan of the verse. I was a huge Star Trek fan and gobbled up just about every book written. Now Firefly comes along and Star Trek what? I never saw the series on it's original run, but caught the tail end of "Out of Gas". Then I saw Serenity and said "Gee, that kinda looks like the cast of FireFly...derr". I got both the DVD box set and Serenity for Christmas. I then spent almost every waking hour watching the series. I have been converted. Then the novel idea (forgive the pun) comes to me that this verse needs to continue. There are more secrets in that "little girl"s head. Obviously I wasn't the only one with this stroke of revelation. I've been scouring the web and have only found mention on a UK site that three books are slated for late next year, Not including the Serenity script adaptation.

Now, I'm a wannabe writer who is looking for an outlet other than my own crackpot sci-fi ideas to break into the market. I had looked into writing Star Trek books when that interested me sometime in the mid nineties, and they had a huge kit with all the technical specifications, character bios, rules and regulations for writing a Star Trek novel. Being the ultimate nerd I of course had all of this information already indexed in a corner of my brain that now finds itself little used, so I did not apply for the kit and tried to go about it with my own wits. Well, I'm older, wiser (relatively), and would love to know if such a kit or even some kind of doctrine exists for porting the beloved FireFly verse onto paperback. I've found pockets of information relating to the technology, and layout of Serenity, and it is kind of refreshing that Joss himself cringes at the tech questions (gives an author breathing room when he doesn't have to worry about fans that have nothing better to do than to tell him that you can't route power from the primary relays, through the dilithium crystal matrix with a flux capacitor into a Mr.Cofee brand cofee maker in order to extend life support indefinately for the Captain's Lion Fish.)

Long story short, does anyone know the contact information that would be most useful for the powers that be in charge of the FireFly license? Star Trek was easy, there was an address you could write to specifically for this purpose. FireFly being a special case, and me not having an agent, I'm at a loss. My online searches have yielded nothing! I'm sure there are other fans out there that would love to take a crack at the verse. Writing series based novels is one of the best ways for an author to break into print.

Hey yeah! Keith DeCandido wrote the novel of the movie Serenity. SO i think it's entirely possible.
THis would be great beause I LOVE reading EU books. THe Star Wars ones are great.
