Can anyone guess why I couldn't play HOG on my windows media player. It seemed unable to obtain the proper codec. Am I wrong in thinking most mpegs are mpeg2? I had to go get an independant mpeg2 player.

I think it uses the DIVX codec. You can download it from http://www.divx.com/

It's an MPEG2 file, not DIVX. I can't open it with anything on my PC either. I downloaded the torrent version.

Trash is a DIVX AVI file, and you need the codec for that, but not HoG. I went ahead and burned an SVCD in VCDEASY and will try it out when I get my hands on a DVD player.

But it's not looking good yet!

I've downloaded HoG using BitTorrent. I get video and audio, but covering over a third of the right side of the picture is a blue/green/purple/plaid corruption thing. Media Player tries to download a codec in the beginning, but there's an error and the episode starts playing? Anyway to fix it?

I've also tired realplayer and that doesn't work either.

From what I can gather, it sounds like a problem playing mp2. Someone on this thread mentioned that they had to download an mp2 player. I'm sure there's a bunch of free ones at download.com.

For them that need it, I have a FTP site up with all of the aired eps on it, as well as "Trash". I'm in the process of downloading "The Message" but it's a few hours off still.

The site is http://CCTalbert.homeip.net I'm limiting it to 5 clients; I'd do more but my upstream speed is somewhat weak.

IS there anybody out there that I can download "Heart of Gold" from? My server is a plain-vanilla NT box, no Kazza or Bittorrent etc., just FTP or HTTP. (I've found that the less software you load on an NT box the better it works. If you graph it you find that with 0 software it approaches 100% reliable! Too bad that also makes it 100% useless..)

AERUNDEL:
HoG works perfectly fine in Winamp 2.91 ( http://classic.winamp.com/) as well as Windows Media Player(6.4 or newer).

Winamp appears to have the required codecs built in, so it may be your best bet.

Windows media automatically downloads the codecs you need (it gives an error message after the download, but the file plays just fine...).

I just tried winamp 2.91, and the picture's terrible. It's got green interlacing over it all, with only half the picture showing. And that half is TILED across the whole window. Also, Mal sounds like he's on Helium.

...I'm gonna try it on a different computer, but I'm not expecting much now

Update:

I tried it on another comp, and it's fine. But as I look at it, I notice the picture is smaller than I thought it would be. So the big green crap on MY computer wasn't actually covering anything, it was just being ugly Funny thing is, I come back to my comp, play the file, and the green stuff has shrunk, thereby showing it wasn't hiding anything in the first place. Kinda creepy, but I have my eps now, so I don't care. Thanks for the advice guys. Off to watch some Firefly!

Honestly - tears in my eyes.

I love this show so much . . . and clearly you all do just as much. Only with the most dedicated fanbase in the history of television shows could something like this have happened. A show that was cancelled still completely watchable because of the dedication of those it has infused with it's love.

I love everyone who's a fan of the show, Whedon and his team, and the crew of the Serenity . . . just as real to me, amazingly, as all of the previous.

Let me first say that this is completely awesome that we are getting to see these episodes ahead of schedule (not sure which schedule that is, but hey). Unfortunately, my problem is that I downloaded HoG usin' bittorrent and it went smooth as..well I've seen nothin smoother. But the audio track doesn't work! This would be expected of real player or any other program thats not up to playin MPEG2 files, but the audio doesn't even come through on the DIVX codec. Yes, my speakers are on. Yes, they are turned up. Just wondering if anyone else is having this problem or if there is yet another alternate download site. Thanks everyone, little bummed to be able to see all this greatness right before me but have to "subtitle" it by reading the script!

Yes, I understand how life can get in the way sometimes.

Thanks again for all you've done already. I'll just have to keep saving my pocket change for Christmas time. So far I have plans to buy 5 sets of the DVDs - 1 for me, of course, and then for each of my friends that I know/think would get into FF. Come to think of it, I better get two (always good to have a backup!).

I'm expecting to see FF DVDs in the top 100 list on Amazon for a while like all the rest of Joss's work...

First, Hello everyone. Long time lurker, but this is my first post.

I just needed to show my gratitude to people like TRS, and LJC. thank you, thank you, thank you.

TRS for the rips, and LJC for the awesome web-based DL. I got 'trash' from you as well, both at about 250 k/s. Hopefully HoG will end up on loony-archivist or versaphile soon.

A few Q's though. I thought VCD's were limited by video length, and not file size. Since an ep is only 2/3 of a vcd, I would expect them to weigh in at about 430 M, the average size of most good Ep's available. So why are these files bigger than average? will it be re-encoded into a 400+ M file if I put it on a vcd? Or are these some kind of higher quality SVCD files that will fill an entire CD?

Lastly, since this is my first post, I just wanted to say that some 6 months after firefly was cancelled, I still visit this site every few days, and watch at least one episode a week. I'm sure there are people far more obsessed than I, but considering the apathy with which I treat everything else, That's frickin' nuts.

You need to download and installed the SVCD codec, and then your media player should be able to open it.

Sigh. I haven't posted on a Firefly board since a few months after cancellation. But after seeing "Trash" I just could not stay away. It was just like hopping into those comfy pair of shoes everyone seems to hate, but you love. If only they could wear those shoes for a while they would know just how perfect they are...the ignorant bastards!

Initially I had to do a double take when I first watched it...here were the characters that I grew so passionate about in new situations, sharing witty dialogue with each other and getting into all sorts of trouble. I almost wanted to cry out "Don't you know you are going to get cancelled?!" Okay, I, like most of you, love this show a bit too much at times - but damnit if it didn't feel good to fly again with the best crew in the 'verse. It feels even better now to post with the best fans out there.

Thanks guys and gals for making the early viewing of these episodes possible - and rekindling my love of this show. Never before have I seen such cooperation and love in a fanbase before. I am sending along everything I get from here to Kazaa so those other fans everywhere can grab 'em. Lots of love you guys!

Keep Flyin'

Hi all,

Unfortunately I've unexpectedly had to stop offering the new ep files for now. I need to free up bandwidth for work related matters, and after that project is over I need to take the server down to swap out a failed drive in the disk array (it was on the verge of failing before all of this started, so it wasn't caused by Firefly! ) May be a couple days before I can offer it as a download source again.

Those people currently connected will be able to stay connected for the current session only. Once the file you're getting now is complete (or you timeout without getting the whole file), you'll be auto disconnected from the server.

I hope several people who did get the files already are sharing them!!

In case anyone is interested, there were 37GB worth of transfers off the server for the 3 eps.

-trs

well, happily I'm able to answer my own question. Mac X users can go here http://www.apple.com/quicktime/buy/mpeg2playback.html to unfortunately, purchase, the component needed to play the video. It's $20. Painful, but worth every penny, The Message is playing now and it's gorgeous in Quicktime. There might be a free way to do this but I couldn't wait, two days of it sitting on my desktop was too much. Thanks again LJC for making the download available !

I've just put "Trash" and "Message" up on eDonkey/eMule (I recommend the eMule client if you're new to the system--the eDonkey client is programmed by retards). I've got decent upstream bandwidth, but it'll still take the files a little while to percolate, so be patient. I plan on staying up as much as possible to make sure that enough people get complete copies of the episodes.

If anyone has a source for "Heart of Gold," please let me know. I wasn't able to get it from the ftp before TRS80 had to take it down. (Thanks, btw!)

You can get eMule at emule.sourceforge.net. Yay, no spyware! And remember, you need the SVCD codec to play these files.

For those of you that have the episodes downloaded to help us that don't, here is what you can do. (bittorrent users)

If I understand it correctly, go back to this link
http://grove.susurrous.net:81/trash.html
and click on the episodes you've ALREADY downloaded. This will re-establish the bit torrent connection, allowing us to download from you. The more people that do it, the faster the rest of us can enjoy this shiny goodness!

If anyone can do this I would appreciate it tremendously, as will probably others!

I am dying to see these - downloading and viewing and sharing Trash was the highlight of my MONTH! I made the VCD of that one and shared it with all my FF fans at work, and made some new converts!

You just have to go back to PhysicsChick's download page and click on the link for the file you have already downloaded that you want to share. Then when it asks where to save it, choose the same directory you already have the file in. The program is smart enough to realize you already have 100% of the file, so it won't re-download anything, but as long as the BitTorrent window is showing, you will be helping out your fellow Browncoats with their downloads. I will have my HoG available via BitTorrent all night. Good luck downloading, all!

Many thanks Embassy (and Maguinan for your e-mail) for the info, got it too late though, I had already purchased the component needed from Apple. Impatience and computer illiteracy are expensive !

So for those Mac X users needing to know, free MPEG-2 players available at versiontracker.com, either VLC player or mPlayer were recommended.

I have "Heart of Gold" but only on my work machine. I can transfer it quickly (via T1) to one other person but I am not allowed to be on Kazaa and only have dialup at home. Email me if you have a fast connection, can share it, and know a way I can send it to you.

BTW, add me to the list of people who can't get the files off TRS80's site to run, though the copy of "The Message" from Physicschick runs just fine. Her copy of "The Message" also zips very nicely--down to about 168mb (starts out at 804mb!).

Anyone know what the story behind the susurrous.net bot torrent page/server being down is? Will it be coming back up? Can we get the matster of that site to ring in and give us some info on this? Thanks...

Chris.
