I, for one, have always just smirked at speculations that Jubal Early survived his space walk, and would have appeared in some later episode. The death was just too cool, too Joss, for him to let him slip the noose.

Until today.

Now, I have the impression that Joss isn't above speaking "from the hip" to frack with people's heads. Still, today I readn an interview with him; here's a little bit of it:

----

The Dude: You also have to bring back Jubal Early, man.

Joss Whedon: I know! Especially because I love that character.

The Dude: It would be fitting if he survived that.

Joss Whedon: Oh, I know he survived.

----

In Mal's immortal words, "Hunh."

Here's a link to the whole interview:

I KNOW. I totally knew it in my gut that he called his ship back to him or something. He had to survive. I just hope we see him in the comics or whatever venue continues.

I am so glad. That character was way too wierd an crazy to just be written off.

That... would actually be really, really cool. Jubal was an awesome character. Steeped in badass with a touch of Wash's silliness. He was one of the best characters.

Oh, hi, btw. I am new.

I wonder how he'll come in conflict with Serenity again. It's actually a good thing that he didn't capture River, if he had, the Hands of Blue guys would have splattered his brain.

I've wondered why Jubal's ship drifts off there at the end. I'd figure that Mal and the crew could, if nothing else, tow it along and then sell it off for money, gut it out for replacement parts, or both. Plus, River was about half-way back to Mal and the Serenity when it took off. Unless she set the controls to have a delayed activation to send it away, I got the feeling that Early may have called his ship back to himself, or perhaps his ship has a homing mechanism to something in Early's suit.

Also, when he boards the Serenity, he doesn't bother with a safety line. If the Serentiy had taken off suddenly while he was in mid-drift, he'd have been screwed. Surely he's entered ships in this way before (he is a bounty hunter after all), so he's bound to have a safety net kind of plan for himself.

Finally, there at the end, Early isn't panicked at all as he's floating through space. Yeah, he's a cool character, but he's not above freaking out...look at how nervous he got when he found out that River had boarded his ship.

It's reasons like this that I think Early survived...he survived by his ship coming back to pick him up. Now, whether or not he's going to go after River again has yet to be seen. Personally, I'd think we would, but he'd try to catch her off of the ship.

For that matter, is the Alliance even after River or Simon anymore?

Early's ship is very small, almost as small as the hospital shuttle in "Ariel", it's entirely possibly that there's a bigger ship waiting for him. Plus I don't think Early ever said that he was working alone. Maybe Early has an arrangement with the crew of a bigger ship similar to Inara's arrangement with Mal.

I hadn't even considered that...but it sounds feasible to me!

I don't think we should assume that the bounty Early was planning to collect was offered by the Alliance. Early appeared to have a great ability to accomplish his plan. To allow himself to get set adrift in space without some contingency in place would not be in keeping with the character as portrayed. Though Early appeared as a villain, he could later have acquired information as to River's plight and what caused it. He then could have become an ally or suddenly come to the rescue of Serenity in an inescapable predicament. Following the BDM certainly there are some empty places in the crew needing to be filled. That's why I love scifi: so many possibilities.

So many worlds. So little time.

Some have speculated about another war for independence after the events of the BDM so maybe the Browncoats will hire Early to hunt down River since she can be very useful against the Alliance.

If I remember right, the bounty on River was 200,000 credits. Now, remember back on the "Jayne's Town" episode where Jayne is talking about the money he tried to steal...he was so sick over losing 60,000 (untraceable) credits. Now, I wouldn't turn down $60,000 in real life, make no mistake about it, but even in today's times that'd only last a person about two or three years tops. Early said he could retire on the 200,000 credits (and he's a reasonably young man), so that was probably (guesstimating) the equivalent of $2,000,000 or perhaps $20,000,000. Who, besides the Alliance, would be willing to put up that kind of money for River, especially since her abilities and/or potential is a mystery for the most part at this point? The only other option I can think of would be the Blue Sun, but aren't they and the Alliance essentially one in the same?

Oh man...now that would be excellent! Jubel as a regular character on the Serenity? Damn, that's coolness just waiting to happen! For some reason, I'm picturing him trying to "comfort" Zoe in her time of mourning...

From the script:

While he works the controls beneath these readouts, the camera pans over to see a picture stuck to the hull near his head. A picture of River -- the one the Blue hands sported in the Train job. Around it is a warrant showing River with the legend, FUGITIVE, and at the bottom, REWARD 200,000 CREDITS, Alliance Bond Standard. WANTED ALIVE.

It's definitely an Alliance bounty.

I just finished watching Objects in Space again. The "reward" definitely was an Alliance reward. The hands of blue guys probably would have done the same to Early as they did to the Alliance guys that held Simon and River. If Early survived his walk in space, I think he was too much of a villain and too untrustworthy to make a good fit among the crew of Serenity. In the BDM, the Operative changed his point of view and even helped put Serenity back to gether but Mal said he would shoot him if he saw him again. Early had no change in point of view and is still dangerous.

So many worlds. So little time.

You're right...it's not a feasible idea, at least not right away. Heck, his pistol-whipping Inara is reason alone to not let him onto the ship as one of the crew (to strike a face as lovely as her's...the man really is nuts!). Still, if the writers could make it happen, pull it off semi-convincingly, and get Jubal on there as a regular, can you imagine some of the situations that would ensue? Jayne is kind of the "odd man out" already. Heck, Early's presence would have Jayne as welcome as Mal to the rest of the crew!

... I hope to god he's alive. Jubal Early was fresh, intelligent, odd, sleek and dangerous.

... He made me recall an interview I saw once, with ... what's his name? Pulp Fiction writer/director...? (I'm drunk at the moment, can't remember).

... Anyway, this man said, bad guys are people, too. They have thoughts and feelings, wants and desires, etc... (he was talking about his Pulp Fiction baddies). They're not just scowling bodies with guns.

... Jubal observed what he saw, thought about it, and commented in a very intelligent, if very odd way . . . very cool for bad guy, in my humble opinion.

Thanks for the info y'all.

My Bro picked up the Serenity role-playing book yesterday, and going on what it said, one credit is roughly about $25. So not only was I way the heck off with my guesstimation...but the Alliance is obviously wanting River back VERY BADLY to offer that kind of dough!

So on that note, if Jubel lived, and I sure hope he did, that man is going to be back for River. To be so close to kind of money and have it slip away, he's going to try again...he's bound to.
