ok. here's a theory:

Inara was born on Sinhon (sp?). her father was a "Burgess" type. rich sort.. maybe Alliance employed family man. In other words, she was his bastard daughter. mother was either a companion or had companion training... some sort of situation forced her mother to leave home... maybe the mother killed the father after trying to steal or legitamately gain custody of Inara...

her mother ended up on the ship that would eventually become Serenity.. maybe even renting out the shuttle to companion/raise her daughter in privacy. Of course, Inara couldn't be in the shuttle when her mother companioned... so... she spent a lot of time as a child with the crew, got a taste for the space pirate's life, and always knew it was the way she wanted to live.

she wasn't necessarily on the firefly for 12 years... she would have returned to Sinhon at some point to prepare for her companion training at the academy when she was 12.

just off the top of my head for fun...what do you think?

Possible, but the mother killing the father is pretty drastic. But i doubt she'd be able to find the EXACT ship she lived on when she was a child.
I always thought she was running away from something rather than trying to find something by wanting to be on Serenity.

i guess its always possible. its a different sort of take on the usual inara theory. i agree with shuttle2, i don't kno about the specifics of our story (the murder of her father andstuff)but the rest is possible.
do you have any evidence other than a gut feeling? cuz i really ike your theory, but i don't want to go along with it without any actual proof. i don't mean to sound mean but something to back it up (a line here, a glance there) would definitely lend credence to ur theory.

I forgot. A while ago i read a fanfic that had Inara being picked by a House Preistess from an Orphanage to be a Companion. That's always a posibility.

In another thread, they said that Joss once said the clue to Inara's past is in the scene with Simon and he is about to describe what it's like to die from suffocation and Inara doesn't want to hear it...
Maybe her family died that way??
Maybe something happened to her whole companion house??
Maybe she killed an abusive client that way??

I dunno....

just a gut feeling... no proof.. but I also read that there was a clue in that scene in Out of Gas with her and Simon talking... and since most theories were based on the suffocation thing... or the I never want to die thing... I tried to think of one based on the "I loved this ship ever since I first saw it" line.

i ain't looking for credence. though I like the theory myself, it surely has no validity.

The Companions are based on Courtesans and Geisha. Geisha houses actually bought young girls from poor families which they train to become Geisha. I think that it is entirely possible that Inara was sold by her parents to the Companion Guild. Although, seeing as how the Companion Guild is far more powerful than the Geisha ever were, it is possible that they didn’t just buy girls from poor families but also from middle class and maybe even higher class families so Inara’s family might not have been poor. Plus there’s also the possibility of the Companion Guild using their influence to get a girl they want from an uncooperative family.

IIRC, in a deleted scene of the BDM, when Inara is speaking with the head of the Training House, it is mentioned that the students are all from the best families. From this and what is said in the series, being a Companion is apparantly a very high-status occupation within the 'verse. so much so that upper class families actually want their children to take that path, and the children have to test well to be accepted.

Given that, it seems unlikely that the Guild would have to stoop to buy or abduct children. If nothing else, it would decrease the lure of the profession for the upper-class. I could imagine Inara being the daughter of a Companion (or two, assuming there are male Companions), or being a "scholarship student", but it seems that most Companions come from very respectable families, and Inara might be much the same.

They didn't say anything about the girls being from respected families, just "good" families, with really good education.

The Guild wouldn't be stooping to buy girls and I never said anything about abducting. You do have to think about the history of the Guild here. I doubt that the Guild was as powerful as it is now when it first started. Buying children to be trained as Companions may simply be a tradition from before the Companion Guild became so powerful. Not to mention the advantages of buying girls, they can be trained from the youngest age and their entire life can be devoted to being a Companion.
