I've read on the trivia section of the IMDB that during the funeral scene, Kaylee is wearing a medallion that symbolizes "marriage". I was wondering if she really married Simon, but there was no time in the movie to show us, just that little detail...what do you think?

I highly doubt it. Kind of a significant plot point to 'neglect to mention'

Seems like an awfully quick step. Simon admitted at the threat of being Reaver Meat that he was attracted to Kaylee.

If their feelings were this significant already, I'd imagine he would have told her earlier. *g*

Those two are probably just enjoying the first blush of romance (and healthy, life-celebrating sex, hehe!) without thinking too much about committment or the future.

Who knows why she's wearing such a symbol.

She is wearing the character for double happiness usually displayed at wedding banquets or marriage festivities. It does not mean marriage in of itself. (Chinese normally does not wear it as an amulet nor a good luck charm on the body.)

Hey, thank you you all or your replies...indeed seemed strange to me that they skipped such a relevant event...anyway it's great to finally see those two together, with Simon and admitting his feelings a bit more openly...and without being drunk!!

Maybe it was so inconspicuous in case it was picked up for another season and they could use that as another story. But if they don't Joss at least did to address it anyway. That's so cool I had no idea.

I also want to point out that the characters on the poster for Serenity are actually the right characters: they really mean Serenity. How cool is that?

I however, hope not.

If they had gotten married, it would've been in the deleted scenes and the script. If they had, it would mostly kill any possibility of return of the show. It's like if Mal and inara ever hook up. The tension there spawns story and character development.

i read somewhere this symbol, like many chinese symbols, is not so strict. Could mean mariage engaged, love felicity, etc

A very popular theory is that it was an engagement symbol. Maybe in the future they use necklaces or Simon couldn't afford a ring.

I agree and disagree. While the budding yet unspoken romantic tensions make for more fun stories, how long can it be drug out before it gets stale? I think that if Simon and Kaylee tie the knot in a return of the series, the stories that follow 'could' be done well. If you ever watched Frasier, I figured the humor would end when Niles and Daphne got hitched, but it didn't. It changed, sure, but it still stayed fun to watch (for me anyway, and I generally don't like television). This depends on whether or not the writers drop the ball...and providing we don't get any more "The Message" types of episodes should the series return, we shouldn't have anything to worry about.

Besides, there's always Mal and Inara for the romantic tensions...I personally can't see them ever hooking up. I'd like to see it someday, but I can't see it being realistic.

I agree with that for the most part. And Fraiser is a great example of how that can work to a degree. Part of my not wanting it to be that way is partly because I don' tenjoy Simon's character as much as the others. Them being together kind of takes away from Jayne. Because now every time hr says something that upsets her, he has to answer to Simon, instead of realizing it was bad and "apologizing" for it to her later.

That's an interesting observation. Your mentioning that brings up another possibility for Kaylee and Simon should they wed...that is, would Simon "step up to the plate" and defend his wife's honor should she need it?

From the pilot episode(s), I would've thought that Simon would be the honorary whipping boy of Jayne...in other words, Simon would be "Frank Burns" to Jayne's "Hawkeye Pierce". This, I think, should've been explored a bit more in the 14 episodes, but by the time we get to "Trash", it becomes obvious that Jayne really doesn't have a bluff in on Simon, and if anything it's the other way around.

I don't know if Simon would be the type of guy to ask Jayne or whoever else to step outside if they offend Kaylee (providing they're not out in space of course *lol*), but it could be interesting to see this possibility play out. Would Kaylee expect him to resort to fisticuffs on her behalf? Would she give him a guilt trip if he didn't? Would she try to talk him out of it before he got thrashed?

Not only that, but it could work toward the further evolution of Simon's character. Not just the fighting bits, but also the daily routines. For instance, we know Simon comes from money...high society, the works. Kaylee's meek and down-to-Earth personality would likely clash with the richie prima donna's he'd dated and become accustomed to prior to her (providing the man had a social life and didn't just work at the hospitals)...she'd be low-maintenance, humbling, more or less completing the other half of his heart, and wake him up to realizations he may have never been aware of before.

Oh well...sorry for getting carried away. Damn, I'd LOVE to be a writer on that show WHEN it comes back one day!

No...thats cool. I understand that. i just hope that it isn't immediate, I'd like to see more of their characters in the single life. Or heck, just have it drag on for a while.

Or see her back in the "Shindig" ideal and have her start to dislike the world. It comes down to a question of which side would "win" that battle. Or would they truly mutually fix each other flaws.

Although this isn't really a response to this thread, it is about Kaylee in the movie.

I recall reading somewhere that when Joss cast Jewell as Kaylee, he wanted her to gain 20 pounds for the roll. When production came up for the movie, they didn't ask her to gain the weight again.

At the risk of being a "MCP," I'd like to put the questions to the rest of you, did anyone else notice that Kaylee looked VERY different in the movie, when compared to her look in the series?

FWIW, I happened to like her look far better in the TV series. I felt that her face looked gaunt in Serenity. Not bad, mind you, just thinner and somewhat drawn.

I still LOVE her smile, it just melts my heart.

She does look different (and I too prefer the other look), but considering that wanting to eat is right up there with keeping the ship in the air as a reason to keep doing jobs, it doesn't seem too odd that she might lose some weight over the months. Things are desperate, a 'drawn' look isn't exactly out of place.

Or, hell, maybe she went on a crash diet to try to get the doc's attention.

Yeah, I noticed in the first scene she was obviously smaller than in the show. Not to say she was overweight or anything, but noticable thinner in the movie.

You should see her in real life. After the Flanvention I really believe the old saw about the camera adding ten pounds. Jewel is a truly slender gal.

Not that there's anything wrong with that...

She had some interesting things to say about the weight issue in the Q&A sessions. She says her current weight is her normal state, and that it was incredibly hard to put on pounds (and keep them on) during the series. Morena says she felt so sorry for her, watching her trying to choke down donuts and such.

Ain't about you, Jayne. It's about what they need.

AURAPTOR

America loves a winner!

Maybe Kaylee wore the medallion to the ceremony, and then left it as her tribute to Zoe and Wash ? We know Kaylee showed up on SERENITY later, but was it before Zoe and Wash were married ? Maybe she wore this medallion at their wedding, or gave it as a gift.

Now, she wears it to Wash's funeral, as a tribute and to say good bye. It might not have anything to do w/ Simon at all.
