I know I seem to be in a minority here but I have to say that HoG is definately my favourite. It's when Mal and Inara's relationship comes to a head. There are so many great moments in it. Mal sleeping with Nandi, Mal and Inara's faces when they meet in the hallway the next morning, Inara's breakdown, Nandi's death and Inara's statement that she leaving. I'd love to see an episode where Inara tells the crew she's leaving, and also when she eventually leaves. Presumably these moments are in the comic.
Who or what is wrath btw. Am I just being denser than usual?

Oh, my, I'm in the same fix, picking ONE or even TWO is so hard.

"Out of Gas" is my most favorite. I love Mal, so Mal in peril and falling in love with Serenity the first time he sees it, is just the best for me.

"Our Mrs. Reynolds" is second.... so much fun, and then again some more peril.

"Serenity" because it's just so damn good.

"Well I'm a fan of all seven, but right now I'm gonna go with Wrath." Mal

There are so few moments in television that can be considered perfect... River dancing as Simon watches from the sidlines. the look on Simon's face (wonder, love, surprise, maybe all three) just simply perfect. I gotta go with "Safe".

Well I guess I am just different as I thought that these two were my favorites.
I liked Shindig, especially where he beats the guy and says your lucky I am a good guy, then he stabs him and says well not that good.

and;

I liked trash cause it had the crew outsmarting Saffrin and had Inara and Mal had a nice moment, but mostly I liked the return of Saffrin.

First post and I cant believe it took me so long to get smart and give firefly a chance. It freaking rocks and I cant believe that FOX cancelled this show.

For me it's Objects in Space

A piece of art. That's what I constanly thought watching this episode. The lighting, the angles, the camera tricks. It all clicks.

The scene with Kaylee and the bounty hunter is probably one of the most uncomfortable scenes in the newer tv history. Frankly, I was quite shocked.

At the moment it is 'Out of Gas' but this will more than likely change the more I watch the series. I like the flashbacks to all the characters origins and interactions in that episode. 'Jaynestown' is very funny I like that episode as well.

Hey all, first post since discovering this forum a few days ago.

Loving the Firefly series, (so much that I bought the box set from the US) and while each episode is a killer in its own right, there are a few standout eps for me:

1 - War Stories
2 - Out of Gas
3 - Heart of Gold
4 - Objects in Space

I also really love River's dance sequence in Safe

Just wanted to add my little bit.

Haven't seen all the episodes yet, but my Faves so far are:

Shindig - Brilliant comic timing and one liners I am in stiches every time I watch it and Kaylee is soooo cute she makes my heart melt when the other people are treating her so badly at the party.

Our Mrs Reynolds - Again brilliant one liners and Mal really gets to show his more noble side with more comic results.

Also just watched Ariel and it had me on the edge of my seat the whole way through.

No bad episodes yet, Safe would be one of my least favourites - No sure why just didn't really do it for me.

And Bushwackers - Nice idea but just didn't reach the mark for me (Being a huge horror fan this episode could have been so much more.)

But as others have said all episodes have had their moments and added extra depth and layers to the characters so there are no Bad episodes, just some that I found less fullfilling than others.

Ariel

Ariel is my favorite. It was the first time where I really believed that Mal respected everybody on his crew and that even though Jayne was there before Simon, River, and Shepard he treats them all as equals.

Out of Gas...

This episode was just so beautifully realized! Everything about it sings... The use of colour (especially in the context of time and placement) is superb. The arrows and lines of the background scenery all lead the eye to exactly where it should be. The juxtaposition of the opening moments of fun and family over the heart-stopping scenes to come.

It is all so heavily textured and thoughtful. I have a soft spot for stories like this... there's no enemy, no opposing forces 'cept for the harsh reality that the ship is just plain ill-equipped for spare parts.

There are moments of joy, fear, shock and relief and they all fit seamlessly into one of the best hours of television history!

Like much? Ahh - yup!

I have to vote Objects in Space first, with Out of Gas, Shindig and Serenity the pilot following.

The mix of humor and suspense was right on the mark. Also, the look at the world through River's eyes, as well as her dialogue, was really touching (and the musical score helped here as well).

We also saw a little more of Mal, as evidenced by his figuring out that River is a reader.

Also, Jubal Early was a great villain, and what made it all the more interesting was that Early, for all his skills, weapons and such, was no match for River. She devised a plan which was excellent, affording the crew a way to get rid of Early without major risk of him killing anyone. Her gaslighting Early was brilliant, getting him muddled up and preventing him guessing where she was until she was ready for him to know it.

Finally the end was excellent, with Mal accepting River (amazing scene since they both were in spacesuits)and clsing with River playing jacks with KayLee.

That scene is actually from Trash, when Saffron returns later.

Our Mrs. Reynolds is my favorite episode. The entire first half is hilarious, I cannot stop laughing when I watch it. "Isn't that....special." I like Heart of Gold as well, good action plus I think Melinda Clarke is hawt. My least favorite would probably be Bushwhacked, it just doesn't do anything for me. There aren't really any funny moments except when Wash is talking to the Commander and I'm all about the funny. Jaynestown ranks right up there too, but only because Jayne is my favorite character. I'll stop rambling now, I watch this show too much.

I've only recently completed seeing all the episodes. They are all great, so picking a favorite episode is hard. Picking a favorite "scene" is a lot easier for me though. That would be the last scene, scene 18 on the DVD, of Serenity the pilot. About 10 minutes starting with with Simon trying to stop the layman from taking away River, and running to the end of the episode. I've seen this one about a dozen times so far.

It has just about everything that makes Firefly so good, and by itself would make a great introduction to the show. All the characters have important parts that are played well. Fast paced action, humor, slow beautiful moments. And Serenity herself is shown off at her best.

Some of my favorite bits, rouphly in order... Mal, Jayne and Zoe galloping back to the ship on horses, in a scifi show

I think the look of the spaceship chase is terrific, especially with the handheld camera look of the rest of the show; one of the best chases I have seen.

Mal taking out the lawmen; so fast and cold, and the camera shifting around to each one in the bay and capturing their reaction.

Wash bordering on panic while on the ground ("where are you guys?"), but calm and cool once in the air.

Kaylee tells Jayne to open a box to cut the port engine hydraulics and says "now it's simple", and the look on Jayne's face when he sees what is inside the box. Jayne is the master of funny facial expressions.

The whole scene between Shephard and Inara, with the crisis of conscious. And I always love the rich saturated colors of scenes with Inara.

And of course the scene with River and Simon... "I didn't think you would come back for me." "Well you're a dummy". Both parts played to beautiful perfection. Such a simple, yet so beautiful exchange. Then again, every scene with River in it is terrific.

And let's not forget the music. The musical transition from the River/Simon scene to Jayne telling Mal that the girl is trouble is just terrific.

And finally of course, the scene where Mal says it's been a good day, Simon points out all the potentially disastrous things that have happened that day, and Mal saying "but we're still flying".

Well... I guess maybe my enthusiasm for this particular part is showing...

War Stories - Zoe in charge, Mal and Wash's dialogue, "shoulda, woulda, coulda", Book kicking ass, River kicking ass, Simon trying to kick ass, everyone going to get their captain....

Our Mrs. Reynolds - non stop great lines, the scene in the cargo bay - HI-larious

Out of Gas - loved the flashbacks

Serenity I, II - great pilot (lucky me, I saw it before Train Job)

Of course, these are the episodes I watched most recently, the list could change after i watch the rest again!

I guess I'll weigh in, although after scanning the thread, I'll be in the minority.

I've got to say - Safe is one of my most favorite episodes! As you can tell by my handle (Tamsibling), I am a HUGE Tam fan. Something about brother and sister relationships is just awesome.

I do also love Ariel, Out of Gas, Heart of Gold (the moment when Inara is crying is heartwrenching), The Message (the scene in the beginning with Simon & Kaylee - and then Zoe & Wash - makes me laugh, cry and want to hit Simon every time). But if I ever just want to get a Firefly Fix, I gotta go with Serenity I & II, sometimes with commentary, sometimes without.

Oh, and the deleted scenes are the BDM make me laugh so hard, I cry, every time!

This must be what going insane feels like.

Yup, OiS is perfection.

Every time I watch it I have to marvel at how well executed it is. Joss wanted us to see the world through River's eyes a little, and it worked perfectly.

Just as good was the fact that Early, for all his training, weapons and such, was out of his league going up against River. She literally played him like a musical instrument.

And the end, where life goes on and River has been accepted, oddness and all, as part of the crew. Outstanding.

Being a 20 year military man I was impressed with how well they they showed the frendship and interworking of the military relationship. How Mal and Zoe wouldn't let anyone else carry their comrade. A comrade's job is to take care of you and tell you the things you don't want to hear or make you do the right thing you may not want to do. Hell sometimes they will do the wrong thing with you just so your not by yourself. I had many a tear over the ending.

John Lee, conspiracy therapist at Hollywood award-winner History Channel-mocked SNL-spoofed PirateNew.org wooHOO!!!!!!

When I first channeled FF's pilot on SciFi Channel, my brain got fried from the radical paradigm shift of space cowboys, literally. But I didn't know it was Joss' work, so there was no connection to BTVS. I just said, wow, that was different. But there was no info after the show to say if there was another episode, just an advert to send TV viewers to watch Serenity the BDM. Slam marketing fails because TV viewers have 15-minute attention spans. Did SciFi run the TV series leading up to SBDM (like it should have), or only after the BDM "flopped"?

Joss got us hooked on annual TV fixes. Now I'm in DT mode. That's why I made my own Little Damn Movie, or at least a FF music video, using only the pilot epp:

Even though there are so few episodes to choose from, I'm surprised by the number of people who've said exactly my choices - joint between War Stories and Out of Gas. IMO, OoG has perfect acting and seamless editing in a setup that should have been confusing to the viewer but wasn't, and War Stories just... is, on so many levels, wonderful. Firefly Disc 3 hasn't left my DVD drive for some time.

Tie for third: the pilot episode, Trash and Our Mrs Reynolds. The only episodes I'm not fond of are Jaynestown (most of it is too funny/silly for me) and The Message (don't know why; it just didn't click). I even managed to like Shindig though the fencing in it is plain awful. Even in a tight shooting schedule they could have done better than that, especially with a guy like Atherton who was supposed to be an expert.

Yeah, I agree (uncannily) with every single sentiment expessed here.

A lot of people have listed my top 4 in a slightly different order to how I'd put them. For me:

1. Out of Gas
2.Our Mrs Reynolds
3 Serenity pilot
4. War stories

Honourable mention must go to Trash, Objects in Space and Ariel but those first 4 are my clear favourites and since quite a few of us are of more or less the same mind I've no compulsion to quibble the exact order (On another day I may well have listed them slightly different ayway).

Shindig seems to contain the best and the worst of firefly. As well as the aforementioned awful fencing I also get the impression that the woman writing this doesn't like Mal very much... He's my favourite character but in this he sometimes acts like an idiot.

It does have some excellent comic scenes and an interesting premise (a bit hollow though i thought) and best of all it has:

"Mercy is the mark of a great man...*stab*...guess I'm just a good man...*stab*...well, I'm alright."

Here is where I fell in love with firefly. So I guess Shindig is a love/hate episode for me. In conlcusion, I've no idea where to rank it amongst all the others...

Out of Gas. It's got a great structure and all of the little character bits from the flashbacks are great. And I really like that it's all a consequence of a choice that Mal made (not replacing the compression coil) it shows how desperate their life is on Serenity. Though as has been said the whole series is great.

For least favorite I would have to say Safe. It's got some great moments but they never really conect into a coherent whole. Scenes just kind of follow each other in a vaguely linear manner but without any central plot developing. Still on a scale of 1 to awesome it's still mostly awesome.

I guess just for the record: Out of Gas. I love the way that whole story was crafted. Two styles of flashbacks, the character evolutions, the framing and camera work; all great. And the ending - perfect.

I also like the two episodes with ties to future episodes: The Train Job (War Stories) and Our Mrs. Reynolds (Trash). I could see Joss having this type of continuation in mind but saying, "we'll wait and bring him/her back next season...the fans will love it!" Wow, I'm glad he didn't wait. I wonder if there isn't a backstory to that also.

I like to view the episode The Message in light of it being the last one filmed (but not the last one aired). Gives it a whole new meaning.
