Okay, I've listened to this line over and over and I still haven't figured out what Mal says. At the end of Safe, when they are rescuing Simon and River, Mal turns to Simon and says, "blah blah Doctor, blah blah town blah blah blah near miraculous". And Simon replies, "Yes, I'm very proud." This line was obviously redubbed but it didn't make it any clearer. Does anyone know what he said? It's driving me bonkers!

Another one. At the end of Jaynestown, when Kaylee and Simon are talking, Kaylee says, "Well, you can blah-blah me some, is all." At first I thought it was "you can feel me some". But now that I listen to it, that's not right. Any ideas?

In Safe,
Mal:I’ve got to say doctor, your talent for alienating folks is near miraculous.
Simon: Yes, I'm very proud.

And in Jaynestown...uh, I don't know what you are talking about so here's the whole Kaylee and Simon bit.

KAYLEE
You got to be steely. You can't be letting
men stomp on you so much
SIMON
It wasn't exactly a plan...
KAYLEE
You ain't weak. You couldn't beat them
back? Or would that not be appropriate?
SIMON
You're never letting go of that, are you?
KAYLEE
Well, you confound me some, is all. I mean,
you like me well enough, and we get along...
and then you go all stiff.
SIMON
(stiffens)
I'm, I'm not, um, I didn't...
KAYLEE
See! You're doing it right now! What's so damn
important about being proper? It don't mean
nothing out here in the black.
SIMON
It means more out here. It's all I have.
I mean... My way of being polite, or however
it's...well, it's the only way I have of showing
you that I like you. I'm showing respect.
KAYLEE
So, when we made love last night...
SIMON
When we WHAT?
KAYLEE
You really are such an easy mark.

This is the Kaylee line I was confused about. You have good ears. Or maybe I just have bad ears.

But thanks for clearing that up.

Can anyone hear what River says on the ramp in WS just before she frags Niska's gaurds? Whoa. Good Myth transcripts say "Can't Look, Can't Look" but it don't sound like that when I'm watching it.

I thought River said "Can't look" twice, but on another go-round, she doesn't say the same thing. I agree, I think it's Chinese. It's at least Chinese and then "Can't look".

But she definitely says "No power in the 'Verse can stop me."

I know many of you were frettin' on that last point.

Does anyone know what River says in Ariel when her, Jayne, and Simon are in the morgue(at least I think they're in a morgue) at the hospital. It was right after Jayne went to tell the fed over the vid screen that he "has the fugitives". Jayne comes back into the room and River wakes and sits up after being "dead" and says something about being caught I think. Jayne is startled and asks what she just said and then Simon wakes up and starts hacking up a lung. I can't figure out what she said! It's driving me crazy! Please help.

Don't ask me what she ment by it but that's what she said.

i would assume it's an old saying. probably means "a penny for a kiss" since pennies are made of copper.

I don't have a reason why, but I always thought I was meant something like "a penny for your thoughts".

I gotta go ahead and throw mine in here, mainly cause I think what I thought I heard was pretty funny. "War Stories", the second time Jayne says "I'll be in my bunk." Zoe walks in and says "Jayne, grab your weapon." Even though now I can tell he says "Why, what's goin' on?" for the longest time I thought I heard "Uh, I was gonna." which I thought was Jayne referring to a different sort of weapon

I was under the impression that "copper for a kiss" is referring to the Bible. Judas is given so many pieces of copper to betray Jesus. To point Jesus out to the ones that will later kill him, Judas kisses him on the hand or cheek or something. I don't know my Bible, so I may be wrong. But I always thought that the old saying, "copper for a kiss" was a remark about betrayal.

Got this from the transcripts at "Whoa, Good Myth" http://firefly.shriftweb.org/index.shtml

More guards advance. KAYLEE can't deal with it. She freaks and runs back into Serenity. RIVER joins her at the ramp, takes one glance out at the three guards, then picks up Kaylee's abandoned pistol.

RIVER
(chanting)
Can't look. Can't look.
RIVER suddenly stands up and fires three times.

Silence.

KAYLEE stands and peers out at the docking bay. All three guards are now dead. KAYLEE looks at RIVER.

RIVER
(smiling faintly)
No power in the 'verse can stop me.

As for the bible thing, Judas betrayed Jesus for 30 pieces of silver, but he did do it with a kiss. Maybe she meant his 'payday' wasn't going to be what he was expecting.

Intresting thought. One thing though, Judas was paid 30 pieces of silver.

River does say "Can't look. Can't look." the official War Stories script has that as her lines.

I wouldn't rely on transcripts too much. While in this case they were correct, most times closed captioning and listening to things can be deceiving. I've had to correct many of my reference database entries after I saw the offical scripts because of miss-spellings and badly scribed lines found in the so called reliable transcripts.

it can be the other way round too. sometimes the official scrips aren't what is really being shot. because sometimes lines get changed by the actors or the director want's something longer or shorter or some such. in most series there is a disprecancy between the script and the real shot EP.

asking the actors what they really said would be the most reliable thing, but sometimes you have no way to ask them or they just can't remember anymore or are simply too busy (which is a good thing) to answer stupid fan questions like that.

I know it's "can't look, can't look."

I figure this is a way of helping the audience to remember she did it with her eyes closed.

I also figure she was reminding herself not to look while she took the shots. I can only speculate that she had more confidence in her mathematical figuring, than on her natural eye perception.

Kinda like the luke & the force thing, only not so much and in the opposite direction. No emotion, no logic, just pure science. Kaylee: "She just did the math"

Mal: “See how I'm not punching him? I think I've grown!”

I always thought that River was closing her eyes during the firing of the gun, not because she didn't trust her eyes, but because she didn't want to see what she was doing. If I were River, and I knew I had the ability to kill off the people who were going to kill me and Kaylee, I would do it, but I probably wouldn't want to see it either. It's just another bad memory.

As for Kaylee's reaction, I think Kaylee is known for getting the wrong idea off of what people do... consider her and Simon. Kaylee considers it to be an insult if you don't take advantage of while she's drunk, so I take her words to the crew regarding things such as why people do the things they do with a bit of a bias.

When I first watched each episode I assumed River's crazy talk was just..well..crazy talk. Now, like a lot of others, I'm reading between the lines. Her crazy talk may hold a key to a door we haven't found yet.

I watched Jaynetown last night. I still think one of the best scenes is when she walks in on Book and says "I took these out of the symbol and they turned to paper" then she looks at his hair and screams. The look on her face was fantastic!

When she is hiding from him it sounds like she is calculating the weight of his hair and fears his head is in danger of collapsing.

Speaking of Books Bible, does he use a King James version or has it changed in 500 years?

The only lines I've always had to struggle to understand are when River is talking to Badger in "Shindig".

I think I've figured out most of it by now, though.

As for "A copper for a kiss".....I think that's pretty clearly a reference to Judas betraying Jesus with a kiss.

It just wasn't as clear-cut as some refs are. Like in B5, when Garibaldi is going to betray Sheridan, he says, "I think the last guy got 30 pieces of silver for the same job."

When River says "Can't look! Can't look!" she stands and shoots with her hair over her face so she couldn't see anyway. I always thought she was using her enhanced abilities to locate the men. Was she reading their location psychically?

I also had the feeling as though she'd been trained to kill in this exact kind of situation.

As to the "Copper for a kiss" comment, doesn't that fit right in with the tone, and style of what she said to Badger in Shindig. I can imagine a "Jack the Ripper" era prostitute saying that.

That's the way I took it when I heard it, though I can't remember now if I heard it as "don't" or "can't". Works for me with either, though. Sort of like she was supposed to get all the visual (and other?) data she needed with one look, and then just act. Not sure if I want to tie myself to the "instinct" concept yet. 'Til I learn more about the blue hands band, I want to stay open to possibilities about what their actual "scientific/medical" goals are. (I refuse to believe this series will not come back!)
