Hello all,

EDIT-Well after browsing a bit on the boards I am not sure if this was the Pilot or simply an episode as it was only one hour and has nothing to do with a robbery. Just wanted to clarify that.

I am a newbie to this board but I was looking for some Firefly graphics for another post I was making and I found this place.

And since you all seem to be interested in Firefly I decided to let you in on the low down.

I work at FOX and as they do for all shows they send down a screener for the sales people to watch so they can hype it to our advertisers.

So to make a long story short I have seen the Pilot episode of Firefly.

And I thought it was great.

I notice this board has built in spoiler warnings but I am going to simply say that this post will contain spoilers so if you do not want to know more then stop now.

Well I heard about this show a while back when our line up was announced but I really had no idea what it would be about. But I love Buffy and Angel so I was excited to see this.

I read the little blurb about it being the Anti-Star Trek and that is definately true.

And I was a little leary about the whole space western thing. But it works, at least for me it did.

The effects are great and the ship is fantastic, you can easily see why the show is called Firefly from the ships design alone.

The interior of the ship is immense in some areas and cramped in others, it resembles more the designs from Alien than from 2001. It is dirty and well used, I think it looks great.

And one thing I loved was there is no sound in space! It took me a second to understand what was going on, I could hear them talking over their coms but when it showed an explosion or action in space it was dead quiet. Reminded me of 2001 and I really like the accuracy here.

There where some Star Wars similarities, for one The Alliance. They travel in immense ships almost like large platforms with huge skyscrapers on them, and they wear the psydo Nazi uniforms that all the bad military dudes seem to wear in sci-fi.

Our heros are living on the edge after ending up on the loosing side of a civil war, this is not really explained in this episode but I am sure it will be in furhter ones. All you know now is that they do not want to draw attention to themselves.

There is a definte western flair in their dress and in the music. They do not look like your typical space travellers, wearing kimonos and dresses just is not standard space fare for most.

The weapons are projectile based at least the ones in this episode where, they look similar to regular guns but with subtle differences. And I saw no one reload so maybe they have solved that pesky problem.

The ship has two main engines and one large engine that they only use for Full Boost I belive they called it. Very nice sequences when they do this.

Yes there are horses and it was kind of strange to see them, as when they are out in the open away from the ship it almost looks like any old western.

The crew also consists of an Ambassador, or as the Captain calls her The Whore. I guess it is standard practice to use your Ambassador to ease your way in and out of spaceports that may not want you there.

The pacing was good and I never felt like it was laging.

And we get some brief interaction with the Reavers. Now the name kind of threw me as it made me think of Blade II, but I can live with that.

They are humans but wacked out crazy mo fo's that no one wants to mess with.

"They will rape you to death, eat your flesh and sew your skin into their clothes, and if your very, very lucky they will do it in that order."

That was a quote from one of the crew when a passanger asked if the Reavers where real.

The crew encounters them a couple of times making for some great action and tense situations, but we are not allowed to see them yet. Obviously they will be major villians.

This show is funny, with a bit of action and that little bit of Whedon magic. He does things that you simply do not expect writers to do, and it is surprising and refreshing.

And no there aren't any robot sidekicks and no voice operated computers.

Hi there! I'm not new here, was one of the first ten to ever post here, but I haven't posted here in about...three months.

Anyways, I kind of sort of skimmed over your review (I wanted spoilers but I didn't...kind of why I've been avoiding this site!) but from what I read the show sounds really cool. I like JW's stuff and this shouldn't be any different.
