First of all, I want everyone to know that I've been a loyal browncoat since before the pilot. That being said, I don't think they'll replace Wash or Book. IF someone had to pass on, and I know we want all our BDH's to live happily ever after but they can't, then it made sense from a narrative perspective to take out Wash and Book. They were the least pivotal to the central Mal/River/Mianda story. You can't do it without Mal or River, you can't have River without Simon, you can't have Simon without Kaylee, and Mal isn't the same tense guy without Jayne. BUT, you CAN have Zoe without Wash because of her relationship wth Mal. And you can have them all without Book. They were perfect television series characters, but not great movie characters. So, that being said, I think Joss knew what he was doing and like NEUCLEARDAY said, he was parsing down the crew for a sequel. And WHEN they return to the small screen, they'll have more time to devote to others.

BUT, should they need a new pilot, I'm voting for River. Think she could stay under Mal's skin enough to keep things interesting.

let me say that I thi- I have no idea where this sentence was going. I'm not sure why I typed these words at all. Just looked today and noticed that I left this hanging. What a boob.

I believe a new character altogether. Maybe someone who is too humble about himself or herself, but infact has real talent for piloting a ship, just doesnt realise it.
I think River should stay single and mysterious.
Maybe add a new character to replace book, maybe someone who knew Shep.Book and wants to track down his old friend, maybe they even reveal that secret that the old Shep.. had been keeping.
Or maybe bring that guy, darn i can never remember his name, the guy who was mechanic before Kaylee, who we see........with her in the engine room. Maybe he comes back and there is then a compitition between hom and Simon for Kaylee's love.

Greatz!

So there is no reason why any future Firefly projects can't be before the BDM, and can't include Wash and Book.

ah, no no no no...there's conceptual art of simon's escape ship in the visual companion. it's not Serenity, 'cause that would make the rest of the movie completely nonsensical. though it would've been completely shiny if they did re-rescue her seeing as it would have ensured wash's survival *sigh* if only...

anyway, my nomination for the new pilot: the operative. hey, he's in need of a job and he's pretty discreet *looks around* anyone? no? oh, well...

Unless Inara becomes Mal's conscience, in which case the pilot could be a companion. No. Ok.

Someone Mal and Zoe served with in the war, Tracey's age, who can develop into a love interest for River. (The storylines! The severe looks from Simon!) Maybe James Badge Dale, the guy who played Chase on 24 and has been on CSI a few times.

Hmmm, the operative, i think Mal has too much.....none friendly fealings towards him.
I dont think that someone too famous at the wheel would do, i steals the film or series....depending on what Joss has in mind from the main character(s)

I for one think it would be an interesting arc to see Zoe slowly bowing out (not for good of course!) gradually over Season 2 due to a pregnancy.

River and Mal flying it sounds fun but I think that the reintroduction of YoSaffBridge, maybe with some interesting two parter about her past or a decision for her to 'give up' (yeah right :P) her life of thieving. Would be interesting seeing as Zoe could be out the picture towards the end to see Mal become more reliant on River and YSB as a Fighter or Pilot. YSB could also give Jayne some fiesty female interest too hehe :P Also some comic moments about trust and the link could be derived.

Maybe not the strongest suggestion for an entire series but would be a laugh for a few episodes, plus seeing more of YSB on screen ain't much of a chore ;)

I thought of the Operative too, but you have to take into account that he's worse than River when it comes to being pyscho. But I think no new character is really needed. There's enough emotional stuff with Wash and Book dying to keep a second season going. River being the pilot would be interesting, and probably a good choice. It seems to me that she does better in situations where everything is strait forward, aim at the head to kill, take off the wrappers to hide, move feet like this to dance. And flying's all about making a certain set of changes to get around something. It's like a treatment for her, something simple not requiring a lot of uncertanties.

Well River and Mal seem perfectly capable of doing the flying, and since Annara is most likely staying on serenity and can fly I expect they will think of some sort of rota system of who gets to fly.

If I remember correctly Mal isnt perticulary good at flying. And the end scene of BDM gives me the impression that River will atleast be helping him pilot in the future.
And if they would hire a new pilot, well I wouldnt say no to the job
But on a more realistic level I think that I could see Rodney Rowland or James Marsters playing a Pilot onboard Serenity.

TRAVELER

I beleave Mal already made his choice at the end of the movie with his talk to River. He was obviously handing over the pilots seat to her. My impression is River will get healthier as time passes and learns to deal with her brain damage.

As for the show continuing I suspect they will move past Serenity and start a new ship and crew. May keep one or two of the originals to draw us fans to watch, but the series has ended and they will sweep the decks of the past.

I could see Inara remaining since she is typically not a participant in their exploits, "crimes". Who else may make it into future episodes would only be my wishful desires and that would be Kaylee who only sees the good in people. The rest would be killed off to prevent any idea of their return. Wash and Book are gone and we must carry on.

I think they should get a new guy...goes River nealry crashed Mal's boat when she goes insane again for a brief time (thanks to the hands of Blue, i don't know). But yeah some-one who isn't a "Replacement Wash" (perhaps an ex-fighter pilot).

Either that or Adam just turns up to work randomly, and Joss decides to "work with it"

CACHALOT

Okay, I have to put my 2 cents worth in.
First I think we have to think long term, at least one season (another movie would have to go in a different direction but we'll get to that another time).
So, here are my thoughts:
The series picks up some months later. The Alliance is spread thin as people are leaving the core planets to the outer rim since the broadcast in "Serenity". With all these new people on the frontier needing things moved, stolen, swapped etc., Serenity's crew are busier than ever. They have made enough money to even get a little "cabin" on an isolated moon for a hideout.
River has been flying Serenity and has been tinkering with her controls, automating systems, upgrading navigation and so on (think more thrilling aeorbatics). The crew has begun to drop their guard regarding the Alliance and their persuit of River. Unknow to them, the Alliance has exhumed Wash's body and cloned him so they could torture him for information.
I know you anti-clone guys are spitting but bear with me.
Since clone-Wash really has no idea how to find Mal, Blue Moon decides to ransom Wash to draw Mal and River out. Chaos ensues and they get Wash back. Figure 2 or 3 episodes to play out.
Questions arise about spying, implants and whatever to keep some tension going between Wash and Zoe.
Either way, flying is a full-time job and River can back Wash up and still kick ass when needed, Wash can get beat up some more and still quip away. I think it would work.

Never ask for change when paying off a ransom.

MWAHAHA

In the BDM, everything after "bullet to the brainpan" is a vision in the mind of River, which she then sets out to alter in her confounding way. The season two kick-off mini-series would begin at that point, allowing our BDH's to prevent the deaths of Book and Wash, as well as Mr. universe, Fanty and Mingo, etc., perhaps.

It's Occam's razor in the hands of Mr. Heinlein: "...then the boy fell out of bed and woke up."

For a sequal, on the other hand, Mal and River /have/ to pilot; Mal wouldn't stick some fella in Wash's seat, he couldn't do that to Zoe. /Especially/ if she's preggers.

Unless and only if the new pilot is already known to Zoe (and probably Mal): The War Buddy scenario.

I agree that GeekUSA's take on it is acceptable, except for the River-like abilities of his new pilot, Kyo. That part seems a bit much, though I enjoy his handling of it.

Also, it seems unlikely to me that any war buddy could be a potential love match for River, anybody her own age would have been too young to fight during the war.

As to The Clone Solution, I can only say /Fie!/ and ask this: Would you have sex with a clone of you?

Muh. Muh-huh. MwaHaHa!

Yeah, we're pretty much just giving each other significant glances and laughing incessantly.

I quite dig the idea of the new pilot being a fat, greasy pizza-gorging slob, with habits that nauseate the rest of the crew but they put up with him because he's so good at his job.

No cloning Wash, leave that to Certain Other Movie Quadrilogies, and no Wash-similar characters. You just have to accept he's gone.

And no prequel movie! Leave that to You-Know-What High-Budget Movie Trilogy and a Certain Ageing TV Series Franchise... The odd flashback scene or three, yes.

I like the idea of River as pilot (hence my signature). She's always been the odd-man/woman out, without a real purpose on the ship. Simon doctored, but River was the crazy traumatized girl, bringing more problems than before because of her status as fugitive and, well, her confused, crazy nature.

She didn't exactly pull her weight until Mal decided to take her on the Lilac job (well, except for that one time she outsmarted a bounty hunter that took everyone else out). Being a pilot for Serenity gives River a purpose on the ship, a job, a function that may actually ground her now that she's on the mend, that will allow her to pay her debt, you could say, to Mal and the crew.

Besides, do you recall those interesting promo pictures of River for Firefly, with her sitting in the pilot's chair? Foreshadowing?

Of course, whether or not she'd going to be trusted to fly Serenity might depend on whether she proves to be good at it (which she should, genius that she is) and can maintain a measure of sanity (which, post Serenity, might be easier for her, since she herself says she is "alright" or as much as she can ever be).

So, yes, I think River is going to be Serenity's pilot, as the movie seems to point that way, what with River "showing some aptitude" for it. :)

(Pictures Serenity with a "learner" plate fixed to the back...)

Mal: "I want you to execute a three-point turn using forward and reverse thrusters..."

LMAO! That puts a whole perspective on things.

River: "Thank you, captain, but I don't need a back spaceship driver. Sit down and let me concentrate so we don't hit that asteroid..."

Mal: "What asteroid?"

LMAO Hilarious! I love it!

I completely agree with those who say it should remain Mal and River as copilots. Three Reasons:

1. It's funny (see above), which was always part of Wash's role, anyway.

2. The crew is already one tight little family as it is. Who needs or wants anyone else? I personally don't.

3. Replace Wash?! NO WAY! I would be heart-broken and I doubt I could ever come to like a new pilot.

Nah... I can't see badger as a pilot. He's a talker, not a doer. He gets other people to do his things for him. All we've ever seen him do is walk and talk! I think he's pretty bright, but I'm thinking he doesn't have the lightning-fast reflexes to pull it off.

TRAVELER

When I watched the movie it was very apparent to me that River is going to pilot Serenity. Mal didn't give a discourse on the need to love the ship to anyone else but River. River may have had episodes but the Miranda ordeal has helped her and River has helped the crew. Remember what she did in "War Stories"? Killed three baddies in less time then it takes to bat an eye. She was the one who planned the demise of Early when everyone else was helpless in "Objects in Space".
Mal wasn't just blowing a lot of hot air with that speech about loving the ship. He was handing the controls over to River. River knows right from wrong and being free of that mind control those freaks were useing with subliminal messages has made River the perfect choice. I've also said this before. As pilot she will work a lot with Kaylee in repairing the ship just like Wash. And who does she play with most? It is Kaylee. Remember River teaseing Kaylee with the apple in "War Stories" and sitting on the floor playing jacks together at the end of "Objects in Space". Who better to help Kaylee work on the ship than River. Mal and Zoe probably can fly Serenity, but they hired Wash because it takes something special that they didn't have. With Wash gone River is the only one with that ability to feel the ships needs and what it can do.

I think, along with lots of people here, that it will be River. But I think there will be some friction there with Mal. Serenity is obviously Mal's baby, and the conflict he feels in turning her over to someone else would be entertaining. Especially someone loco like River.

River would be the choice temporary replacement, but long-term I think they would need to find someone a little more predictable and a little less violent...

But at the end of the BDM River is a little more predictable and a little less violent. She's dealt with the nightmares - at least the really grisly ones featuring reavers, "I'm OK. I'm OK." and thereby achieved a sense of peace she never had before and gained conscious control of her fighting reflexes, "My turn." She is no longer just a weapon that can be triggered.

very true... I have a hard time imagining anyone else behind the wheel of serenity so, I am still sort of holding onto the hope that maybe wash survived? If he really is dead, then River would definitely be my first choice. she obviously knows what she's doing.

TERRI

Of course Wash is comeing (sic) back! At least that's what I tell myself as I'm huddled in a little ball in the corner of my room. River is still, waaaay too unstable to be held responsible for piloting the whole ship, and handling communications (as Wash was apt to do). Anybody remotely funny would be a bad choice simply because fans would automatically compare them to Wash and it would be a disaster for everybody. I would imagine some fresh blood, who knows, but I doubt the position will be open for long. What with Wash's inexplicable, yet triumphant return. *whimper*
