Okay, now that I've been compulsively watching and rewatching everything for a month or two, I've been noticing that in my head the deleted scenes are starting to blend in with everything else.

So here's the question, and maybe it's a little stupid, but I thought perhaps there's a slight chance it's relevant: do you consider the deleted scenes from the BDM and Series to be canon? ie, within the fiction, do you consider that the events in there actually happened?

My example: The 2 scenes cut from the pilot. Both the alternate opening and the part where Zoe is explaining the name Serenity to Simon. Now, I agree with the choice to take them out of the episode, but there's still some really, really great lines in there. So while they don't 'officially' show it in the pilot, I can see Zoe and Mal stuck on Serenity Valley after the Alliance overtakes them while both sides negotiate for peace.

It's a small point, but well... looks like we may have plenty of time for nit-picking ;p Was wondering if anyone can see where considering the deleted scenes to have 'actually' taken place would be a contradiction in any way. Or if considering that they weren't in the actual episode, that they be considered 'apocryphal' and not canon within the reality of the 'verse? Or, does the fact that the choice was made to include it in the DVD mean we can take it as 'fact?'

I'm sure that there were more deleted scenes than just the ones included on the DVDs, so the way I tend to look at it is this: if Joss went to the trouble to put the deleted scene on the DVD and it is in a finished form, i.e. ready to be inserted into an episode with only minor sound or lighting work, then it can be considered part of the canon. Also, if it doesn't affect the continuity of the 'verse, othe wise it is apocryphal. That's just my two credits' worth, anyway.

By the way, I consider both of the deleted scenes from the pilot to be canon, since I think they were cut for time and not for content, if my memory is correct.

I tend to regard deleted scenes as “semi-canonical,” meaning that they provide a reasonable account but can be contradicted at any time by the show/film/comics without me yelling “Retcon!” Likewise, any exposition that they provide I feel must be taken with a grain of salt, because seeing as how they didn’t actually air, Joss probably does not feel bound by the material within them (or at least bound by the specifics of that material).

As for why they’re included, the “Firefly” deleted scenes were included because Tim Minear had the foresight to save the snippets of film for the DVD (he’s the only one at Mutant Enemy who did that, which is why the only Joss shows with deleted scenes are “Firefly” and the third season of “Angel,” where Tim was one of the lead writers.) In the BDM, I get the feeling that the deleted scenes included on the DVD were ones that Joss felt were decent scenes in their own right, but which didn’t really fit in the movie proper. I don’t think either set of scenes was included because it’s “canon.”

I'd consider them canon because they only serve to elucidate parts of the story we already know. They add no new plot points or shed new light on characters and their relationships. The ones on the DVD's are only there to serve as alternatives to scenes included in the show.
