How much time has passed between Serenity and The Train Job?

I was trying to work this out. The first time I saw it for some reason I assumed it was months, or at least weeks, but looking back there isn't really evidence supporting that.

River and Simon seem relatively new to the ship, "We're in a ship," etc. Most of the dialogue between Mal and the other characters could just be attributed as Joss trying to introduce new people to the 'verse though, I guess.

So is there any specific time that's passed? Anyone know, or have any further evidence?

Got no real evidence, but I always figured it was fairly short between them. Always figured they pretty much flew straight between Whitefall and Ezra, maybe a month or a couple of weeks between I reckon.

You think you know--what's to come, what you are. You haven't even begun.

Considering the Train Job was kind of a... second first episode, if that makes any sense, I would say that very little time had passed. As the episode that was originaly aired as the pilot, the Train Job has a lot of exposision and reiterates quite a few things; Simon rescuing River from "that place", Mal saying they're on for the same reason as Book "I need the fare". If it could be said that any time at all had passed between the two, I would say it was probably a matter of days, just because I think the Shepard wouldn't still be talking about such events weeks later, or asking Mal why he took Simon and River on in the first place.
Am I making any kind of sense?

If you can pinpoint a date that the crew was on Whitefall you could subtract it from whatever day is "Unification Day", since that was the reason Mal was in that alliance friendly bar at the start of The Train Job.

Do not fear me. Ours is a peaceful race, and we must live in harmony.

only recently discovered the brilliance that is firefly. saw the movie first, then got dvd box-set. i'm pretty sure simon says to mal that he and river have been on serenity for some months in the movie. the opening scene being a flash back almost to how simon got river out of alliance clutches. not sure where the confusion lies here.

jayd, there are some inconsistencies in the time line between the series and the movie. Events in the series seem to consume quite a while (consider the time that must have elapsed between OMR and Trash, for example). Then there was some time between OiS and the movie (Book and Inara leaving, the events in the comics, etc.).

Yet in the BDM Mal says River and Simon have only been on the ship for eight months. That's pretty hard to reconcile, so I like to think Mal got a bit bibbledy in the heat of the moment.

I don't disagree on any particular point.

Lets look at the available evidence.

In "The Train Job" Inara says she's been on the ship for 8 months. In the next episode "Bushwacked" she tells the Alliance commander that she's been on Serenity for just under a year. Now in "Serenity" the movie Mal tells us that Simon and River have been on board his ship for 8 months. In "Safe" one of the Grange brothers mentioned the cows have been on Serenity for, 'near a month'

So between "Serenity" the episode and "The Train job" can be no more than 3 months (assuming the events of the remainder of the series took place over two very busy weekends on either side of the month with the cattle) but is more likely to be something like one or two days based upon character interactions and the likelyhood of the events from "Our Mrs. Reynolds" through "Those left behind" consuming a fair amount of time.
