Hi, I just want to see what character other people like. If you can, type in the character and then a reason why you like them. feel free to put as many characters as you like on here. I'll list mine:

Simon ~ I just plain love how much he cares about his sister, River. I have always loved when brothers and sisters care so much about each other they will do anything for them and that is excatly what Simon does for River. I also love how proper he is and how sexy he looks in his proper clothes and with no shirt on! ^-^

River ~ I love her kind of not-right, childish-like way of doing stuff.

Kaylee ~ I love her kindness and how much she tries to keep everyone together. One of my favorite lines of her's is in the first episode and she leans over, gives Mal a light kiss on the cheek and says "I love my captain". I also like how she cares for River to like an older sister.

Please respond! I want to know what other characters are other people's favorite... Please!
^-^

TEELABROWN

River- She's intelligent, she can seem random, and she's sorta psychic.

Simon- His devotion to River, and they way he can act around Kaylee.

Mal- Even though he's a smuggler and a theif, he still has honor. That's better than some people.

Kaylee- She's optomistic, she's cute, and she knows a lot about engines. She is an all around likeable person.

Wash- Wash is just plain hi-larious.

Zoe- She too has honor, and she can kick ass!

Jayne- He's a mercenary. And at the end of Ariel, he didn't want them to know what he did.

Book- Don't know. But I do love the crazy hair scenes and the Special Hell speech.

Inara- She has charm, grace, and is a caring person. She acts like a big sister to Kaylee, and is georgeous.

MALCOME REYNOLDS: I feel like I've been walking around in his skin for a while. Can really associate with him and to Jayne to a lesser degree. Ships, military background, etc. Such a complex character, lots of twists and turns in his personality! Ruthless one second, smiles and jokes the next. Not boring or predictable like a Captain in other genre shows.

Mal - Yes he is a smuggler, but he is very protective of his crew and always has a snappy come back. Additionally, he rarely puts up with people jerking his chain. The best example is in "Serenity" when he simply shoots the marshall without bothering with the whole "negotiating" part of the process. A man of action and fierce loyalty and a heck of a good leader.

Zoe - Like Wash said, she's a warrior woman. 'Nuff said.

Very impressed with how Mal didn't break stride when he popped Dobson. Just nonchalantly strode up to make sure he was dead, and tossed body over the side. cool hand luke. Nearly keelhauling Jayne was very "Shan Yu" of Mal. Guess Niska isn't the only fan of his writing!

Jayne Cobb.

I haven't figured out exactly why yet either. He's totally NOT my type, but I'm obsessed with him at the moment. There are two reasons that stand out: 1) He's freakin' hilarious and 2) No pretenses. He talks the way I think.

They're both just loveable rogues really.

Well....I would definitely say that in the realm of sci-fi shows the entire crew of Serenity would be my favorite characters. The interaction between them reminds so much of the interaction between my & my friends that it's eerie. I guess that's part of why I like the show so much.

As for favorite character...I guess I would have to say Captain Reynolds. I can relate to his character and apparently have a tendency to act like him. A fact that my friends never miss a chance to call me on when I do it.

SHAMBLEAU

River.

Summer Glau could have been a huge silent film star. She makes poetry with her body. Just watching her walk through Serenity in OIS is like watching a dance recital. Or check out the way she looks when she's staring at the stars in Bushwhacked. Or the fascinated delight in her eyes and the way her mouth is mumbling calculations as she tries to figure out the rules ot the game the crew is playing in the same ep.

See her do the same thing in Safe when she's figuring out the dance steps and then watch the utter joy she takes in dancing and, while she's at it, improvising an even better dance than they're doing, before skidding to a confused, horrified stop as she intuits what's happening to Mal and Book. All of the above examples are wordless, and yet she's expressed more character in those scenes than actresses on other shows have with reams of dialog.

Most of the roles on Firefly are stereotypes who are in the process of being fleshed out. River is the Crazy Waif. But Summer and the writers have given River so many shades that she's way beyond that already. Naive, scary, brilliant River. Sweet and bratty little sister, confused and lost young woman, eerie and dangerous wild card. Poignant. Hilarious.

That's quite a range for someone whose dialog is so sparse and often incoherent. So. hats off to you, River. I can't wait to se what you bring to the movie. I know it'll be great.

After reading Shambleau's highly articulate post I find that I must agree with her in several respects.

Even though she is not my "favoritest" character River/Summer Glau is a very interesting and complex character being played by a very beautiful and skilled actress/dancer. It's hard to believe that this is only Summer's second(?) acting job. She is able to communicate so much through her movements and expressions that even some veteran actors would be hard pressed to compete. As Shambleau mentioned in the EP "Safe" River goes from moody & melancoly to lit up with joy in such a way that you can't help but feel joy right along with her. Her smile alone was enough to lighten my heart.

That being said....With regards to the descriptions of Rivers movements I find I must agree with Kelso who said..."I'll be in my bunk."

I agree with Werzbowski. Also, I think River is probably the toughest character to play. In that the script requires a lot of Glau's own interpretation and finding the right mind set for a girl who's mind is unstable. Summer Glau is doing a great job with the character! However, my fave is still Mal hands down!

Tough choice. I'm caught between Kaylee and Jayne. On the one hand, I just can't help but love Kaylee--she brightens the whole mood of the show, and when she hurts, I hurt. But on the other hand, Jayne has the most memorable quotes ("What'd ya'll order a dead guy for?"), plus he's just cool to start with.

In the end, I have to go with Kaylee.

SOUPCATCHER

Hey all, newbie here,

Zoe is my favorite character. She's a great fighter and tremendously loyal to Mal. More than anyone on Serenity she knows what the Captain went through in the war and that bond between them is one of the strongest on the show. The look on her face when Mal wakes up at the end of Out of Gas says it all, "Welcome back, sir". In her own way, she's trying to recover from what happened in Serenity Valley by marrying Wash and wanting to bring life back into the world. She's an optimist who has been beaten down enough to learn to keep it hidden. I find it interesting that she would pick Wash to marry, someone who clearly did not fight on either side and is about as non-fighter-like as anyone. Maybe I'm reading more into the scene but it seemed like a little something died in her when Wash wanted to go back and do physical violence in War Stories.

Between Mal and Zoe I think we see two different paths of recovery.

That, and she is a warrior woman.

Shepherd Book is awesome. I love his "special hell" speech, and the "Well that's just special" line later in the episode. I love his reaction to River "fixing" his bible. There's a mystery about who he is that's compelling.

Hello all, first post, new guy in town.
As the name suggests, The Tam siblings are my two favorites, with Jayne coming close behind.

Simon is great because he gave up a fantastic life of privilige for his little sister, and he's still a good guy. In Ariel, he takes the time to save a dying patient, and even after he finds out that Jayne rolled on him and River, he tells him that he will never let him die in his care. That, and he tries his best to help, even though the boy couldn't hit the broad side of a barn from the inside with a targeting laser.
River... well now, she's just plain interesting. No matter how she treats everybody else (her particular treatment of Jayne is quite humorous, if a little violent sometimes), she's still a little girl when it comes down to it, when Simon has to be the doctor to her. Her psychic abilities give her a bit of an odd personality facet and her sometimes unnerving reactions to situations just make her that more interesting.
Jayne.... well, it's Jayne. Always seems to be about the money, but he's got a soft spot in there somewhere that he loses a lot of the time. And he's now my favorite Baldwin, and I despise the Baldwins. One of my favorite scenes is Jayne in the airlock, and before he goes, he still doesn't want Mal to tell the others what really happened to him. Kinda like that.

Definitly would be Kaylee. She's the heart of the crew, and she determines the mood of the show. If Kaylee's happy the audience is happy; if she's sad, well, you get the picture. If my memory serves me correct Joss even mentioned in the commentary how the audience believes whatever Kaylee says; cauz whatever she says is true.
Example, Kaylee: (to Mal,'Serenity') You are a nice man too, Captain. You always looking after us.

ANKHAGOGO

Boy, I bet I don't get to bed at a decent hour tonight...posting about this show is addictive. :)

I really can't decide who my favourite is. So I'll join in on the "what's cool about each person" thingie.

Inara -- You know, I didn't like her at all at first. I just thought, "Oh, typical hot chick -- dark hair, dark eyes, all mysterious and seductive...boring." But when she lost her composure after kissing Mal & passing out in "Our Mrs Reynolds", I started to like her. She's also very sweet to Kaylee, who obviously has never seen anyone more glamourous, and she's very protective of River, too. She's very sisterly to both of them, and I think all three of them need that.

Wash -- Men who make me laugh are excellent. Wash is kind of a dork (which is not a bad thing in my opinion),he's very good at what he does, and he doesn't seem to be at all bothered by the fact that his wife kicks ass on a regular basis and he just doesn't.

Zoe -- I like her, but I can't quite articulate why, other than whoo hoo! A girl who kicks ass! I really want to know the story of how she and Wash got together.

Jayne -- Who said it? His complete lack of mouth-to-brain filter is great,as is the fact that he's very basic in his thoughts. And what a merc --wondering if there's gold inside Tracey's body. I also like the fact that I don't quite trust him completely -- I almost do, but not quite.

Simon -- The obvious someone else has already said -- he gave up his whole life -including the rest of his family, not to mention money -- to save his sister, and now is doing everything he can to fix her. I swear, watching him climb on that pyre with her makes me weepy every time I see it. He's a little formal, but it's a nice contrast to everyone else, and he also is a slight dork. It's very cute to watch how Kaylee, the least intimidating person in the galaxy, can turn him into a blithering idiot.

Book -- Could we please have one more unanswered question about him? Oh, it's just making me crazy! I like the sometimes implication that Shepard's the only voice of reason on the ship, or as Ron Glass said, that he's the conscience. It's not that I think the rest of em would be out doing brutal things without him, it's just that I think he does sometimes center everyone.

River -- I think it's better that she's not quite right. If she were perfectly sane, and as off-the-charts intelligent as Simon said, she would be very scary. She's freaky anyway, and I always like that. I also find it interesting that even as damaged as she has been, River still trusts people other than her brother.

Kaylee -- Kaylee's adorable, let's face it. She's a sweet fairly naive little farm girl who isn't annoying in her perkiness, and that's a neat trick. Some of my favourite Kaylee scenes are in "Shindig" -- her big eyes at the chandelier, the very end where she's just sitting there, looking at her dress. And even after all the crap they've been through, she shows no signs of becoming cynical or jaded.

Mal-- He's a stand-up guy who definitely inspires loyalty, and sometimes he does the right thing even if it's gonna hurt. His crew takes him seriously, but not so seriously that they don't feel comfortable giving him massive amounts of crap when he needs it. The relationship between him and Zoe is interesting, in that you so rarely see a solid male/female-non-sexual-bond like that in a show. The dynamic between him and Kaylee is even more interesting to me, because if you notice, they're very huggy with one another, and Mal's not touchy-feely with anyone else. He goes out of his way sometimes to soften his attitude when he's talking to Kaylee. He's exactly the guy you want in charge, because you know he'll do his dead-level best to take care of you, even if he never let you really get to know him.
Mal would break my heart.

It's a little strange to me, because it's so rare that I pretty much like everyone in an ensemble cast, and often, the "main" character isn't nearly as interesting as everyone else. Doesn't seem to be the case here...

Favorites, favorites. They are all great however, I do have a few that I like above the rest. They appear in order (top to bottom) of most fav to fav.

Mal - he's honest, he's honorable, he's strong, he's got a great sense of humor (loved the prank he pulled on Simon in "Serenity"), he's deep, he's tortured, and he's loyal. He also never gives up. He might have lost his faith, but he never gave up on life and living his life to the fullest. He is also willing to sacrifice everything he has (except maybe his ship) for the people he cares about.

Zoe - she's loyal, she's not afraid to argue with those she respects, she's strong, she's honorable, she's resilient, and she's a warrior woman. She knows how to take care of herself and is capable of doing so. She is able to love after what she's experienced. She can kick some serious pi gu (ass).

River - have to love how she moves throughout every episode. Summer Glau has integrated the perfect amount of her dancer's grace into everything River does (just look at the scene in OIS where she picks up the twig (gun)). I love her disjointed speach.

Kaylee - I love how she's so sunny most of the time. I also love how she just randomly gives Mal kisses on the cheek.

EMBERS

Mal: he is cynical and unhappy but completely devoted to his crew

Zoe: she is so strong and beautiful

Jayne: he is worthless except for that heart that peeks through and surprises me

River: who is so compelling in her innocence and her perception and her insanity

Kaylee: who is so sweet and loving and pure of heart...

Book: who has all kinds of hidden dark secrets I want to learn

Simon: who hasn't even begun to learn to be the man he will become

Wash: who is such a goof until the chips are down

and that is not in any particular order because I adore them all!

A favorite character....Hmmmm. That is tough because they all have great aspects.
Mal is the quintesential leader, always putting others before himself and that code of honor of his scores major cool points.
Zoe is the 'warrior woman' which is cool in and of itself IMO, but she is also feminine which is not so easy to pull off.
Jayne....hehe...well, what can I say that hasn't been said already? Not as smart as he thinks he is and not as dumb as others take him for, this character had LOTS of room for development and you know it would be funny in the finding out.
Kaylee, sweet Kaylee...I forget who said it but it's true, she IS the heart of the ship/crew. Everyone laughs and cries with her and has also been pointed out...she is very cute.
Sheppard Book's character poses some very interesting questions that could have spawned a few intriguing episodes for sure...was he good, bad, or a neutral element just trying to make his way in the 'verse?
Simon is even a better example of selflessness than the cap'n and has some rather good one liners if I do say so myself.
River...wow...talk about potential for character development and extremely well done by Summer Glau. Shew always added a bit of random spice to the show( as well as the crew's lives).
Wash, the ever comical and sometimes serious pilot extrordinaire. He rarely fails to bring a smile in anticipation of antics and quips.
Inara, the picture of culture and grace but with a secret. I think she is easily the most underated character because her role seems so obvious, i.e. to provide romantic tension with Mal, but IMO has some potential to be the focus of more than one or two episodes.

Truly, the best thing is no single character but the interaction between them that causes the 'magic' of the Firefly experience and losing any of them would have hurt the show.

Mal, Simon, and Kaylee are my three favorite characters. I just love the way they all talk and all in different ways. I love how hilarious Simon is when he is trying to be super serious and proper and how much he loves his sister, i also love how completely clueless about women he truly is. How Kaylee is so sweet and innocent and yet not at the same time. How Mal is just an honest man doing some dishonest work and his deep love for his ship and crew.

DUCKIE

I would have to say Simon is my favourite character, because he's the one I identify with the most. I went to school in a special class for "gifted" kids (many of whom were so smart as to make me look like an "idiot child") and I used to be quite shy and awkward in social situations the way Simon is with Kaylee. I'm also the oldest of 4 kids and quite close to my siblings, so when Simon is being the big brother and doing something amazingly brave and selfless to save his sister (climbing on a pyre, attacking Early... giving up his entire life as he knew it) it really pulls my heartstrings.

All of the characters are so amazing though, I think you almost have to have one favourite for just personal reasons with the rest of them coming in a close second :o) I've seen shows and movies with good, well-written characters but never one where the entire ensemble is SO real and endearing.
