Just watched Jaynestown again. Have you ever noticed, at the end after he's released the land lock and while his father's yelling at him for it, that Fess Higgins is sitting with his legs spread w-i-d-e apart? After what he's done with Inara and learned about himself, guess what's now so big it ain't gonna fit anywhere any more! Great symbolism! LOL!

lol, yeah, i always noticed that, thought it was kinda funny.
hey, while we're on that ep, i've got a question: when fess is talking about jayne, he says it happens "while he's growing up". ok. but when they let stitch out, they say its been 4 years. and fess is pretty clearly 26. so, is 22 supposed to be "growing up" or is it a continuity error? that's always bugged me...

You think you know--what's to come, what you are. You haven't even begun.

That always bugged me, too, Miramel. Bit of an error. I don't know if it's supposed to be that Fess kind of has a hero-worship thing going with Jayne that can only be formed in youth so they said "well, it happened when he was growing up then!" and just forgot that it had only been four years and Fess was 26... It's actually one of the more blatant things to nitpick on that show.

Nitpick supported!

I've wondered if the Fess in the original
script was intended to be younger, say 21,
or even 20 (at what age would Mayor Higgins
have expected Fess' defloration?), so the
reference to "growing up" would have worked
better.
Then they cast it with an older-looking
actor, and didn't make the adjustments...

(Another question was "who was he going to
sleep with if all that was available was
his Daddy's mudders?"

Been a while since I've seen that ep but could it be that the whole thing happened when Fess was younger but they didn't lock up Jayne's partner until a few years later, only allowing him to have been locked up for 4 years? Does that make sense?

INDIGOSTARBLASTER

It could be that Fess was just a late bloomer generally, so that at 22 he still felt like a kid, and was therefore still "growing up" when Jayne's heist went wrong.

After all, if you continue to live at home, and maybe get tutored at home rather than going to school, and are given no responsibilities in the household, and don't have a job, and don't marry or have kids or even have sex... how are you supposed to figure out you're actually a grownup?

Heck, I haven't lived at home for more than a couple of weeks at a time since going away to university, but when I was 22, I went on a vacation with my parents and little brother, back to the "home country" where I didn't speak a word of the language and was totally dependent on my parents for everything. I found myself regressing into petulant teenagerhood a couple of times. Hard for me not to think of that vacation as taking place during my "growing up" years, too.

MarvlGrl, that could kind of make sense. Jayne said he was in Canton "A few years back" but as it's Jayne, I don't expect him to be all that precise. Maybe the trial went awhile or something? I still can't quite see it, though. IndigoStarblaster's idea also makes a certain sense.
Perhaps there were other women on that moon (it was said that Canton was a town, not the whole moon) so maybe Fess was supposed to go after them. Can't imagine he saw them very often, though...

ONEMANSHORT

I have another little problem about the episode, which is my favorite episode by the way :D How come the man they were supposed to meet gets his feet and hands chopped off and is rolled into a bog when he commits a crime, but Stitch is just put in a box? i agree with the theory that it took a while to catch Stitch/put him on trial. That would make up for a few years, it's true I always thought of Fess as being a kid when it happened (like 8 or 9) but this could work too.
