just reading about fave episodes and wondering which openers (are these called teasers?) people loved.

i sometimes just watch episode openers if i don't have a lot of time...my most recent viewings:

bushwacked - kaylee on jayne's shoulders, looks like they're all really playing a serious game

our mrs. reynolds - ...by my pretty floral bonnet...if i could make you prettier, i would...

train job - bar brawl, always fun

shindig - another bar brawl!

war stories - if you fall and die, i ain't cleaning it up

OiS - very eerie beginnings

my mind is blanking on the rest (i'm tired and distracted)

I think the funniest and obviously catches you from the opening is "Trash". Naked Mal sitting in silence in the desert........."Yep, that went well."

All of them. I guess if I had to choose a favorite I'd go with the teaser for Heart of Gold. A classic Mal and Inara moment, "This distress wouldn't happen to be taking place in somebody's pants would it?"

Mal's face after "Mr Reynolds sir... I'm your wife" has me on the floor every time. That whole opener is just great. Jayne getting all emotional over the rainstick guy is just priceless!

Hehe, yeah. after the beginning of that one you are almost required to ask "What happened??"

My favorite is probably the beginning of the pilot, just because it is cool. I always love the way it goes right from Mal losing it all in Serenity Valley to him floating in space. It's a very interesting contrast.

The message - just because it has a sweet as hell Simon/Kaylee moment in, and then he screws up, which is always funny.

I had the same reaction to "Trash"--till I saw Saffron and said "Ah. Now I see. This should be good."

My favourite episode opener is the one in 'Objects in Space'. It was very well done and demonstrated River's perception, as well as her interpretation of the crew and what she can sense in them and their chemistry, in a manner which I thought was truly ingenious. The scene with the twig/gun was also ingenious. The fact that River realizes that a gun is merely an object that has been imbued with meaning indicates that it is more because she is exceptionally aware of reality than because she is ignorant to it.

I like to call 'em bookend scenes- the teaser and the tag.
Joss does them very well. Often they have not much, or even nothing , to do with the main plot, but it's amazing to see how much story he can pack into just a few minutes-- OMR is a perfect example-- gunfight, funerals, and takeoff in less than 6 minutes.

You were busy trying to get yourself lit on fire. It happens.

"Our Mrs. Reynolds" is my favorite comedy teaser, "Out of Gas" is a good teaser as far as cinematography and story-telling goes, and "Objects in Space" is the best weird/different (in a good way!) teaser.

God, I love all the teasers, I think. But my three favorites have to be:

Our Mrs. Reynolds: All the humor, and your little glimpse of everyone at the celebration is so cute. (Actually, it's one of my favorite Wash/Zoe moments ever...)

Out of Gas: I actually love this entire episode, but it's such a great beginning with the flahsback and the harsh contrast between the drama of the present and comedy of the past.

Objects in Space: Getting inside River's head, and the way it's done, is just amazing. It's extremely beautiful and specific to each character. (And yet another of my favorite Wash/Zoe moments... I could watch that small little scene between them over and over and still get chills!)

But I really love them all... Every teaser really catches your attention.

Not really openers but they are the first things that come out of Wash's mouth in a couple eps.....

Sample #1 " Yes.. this is a fertile land. We will live here and call this land...this land."

Sample #2 " OH MY GOD IT"S GROSS!!And wait there's something in a jar."

BAGHEERA

I'd definately have to go with the OMR opener... solely because of the gunfight.

The reverse-ambush was something straight out of a spaghetti western, and I felt that element was a little too light in the series. They also managed to inject some standard-firefly-fare Mal crossdressing/nudity humor which is always good.

My least favorite would be safe. watching creatures get skinned always makes me uncomfortable... and i felt the "deliverance mountain men" part of the teaser was one of the weakest scenes in the whole series.

I'd have to go with the opening of Serenity (the pilot episode), with the hilarious flower bonnet Our Mrs. Reynold's a close second.

Out of Gas - Im a HUGE fan of a mystery and that episode really starts out strongly. I remember yelling...WHAT THE ^@*&@~!!

Some of the closeups on Nathan are amazing, the look of hopelessness on his face as he falls to the floor is one image that doesnt fade with time! Also the look of love when we skip back in time to when he first saw serenity. WOW!

DISSONANCE

My favourites are:

Our Mrs. Reynolds: The dialouge between Mal and Jayne is hilarious

War Stories: Just 'cause

and The Message: Soley for Jayne's one-liner "What'd y'all go order a dead guy for?"

Our Mrs. for sure! All the Mal- Jayne dialog is soooo funny. One of my favourite lines:

I don't know I, passed out.

The pilot Serenity episode - gives some good background story about Mal and Zoe.

OMR - Gotta love that pretty floral bonnet.

Shindig/Train Job - fun brawl scenes.

RIVER6213

I'm sorry if this isn't a Firefly episode opener, but I have to say that the Serenity movie opener was the best of all. The whole thing with Simon getting River out of that facility, and then the scene with that guy getting stabbed by the operative who later says "Where are you hiding little girl" and then the screen goes completely black and it switches to the Serenity logo that turns out to be a banner on a ship. The Music begins to swell, and the camera starts to orbit around the ship; our beloved Firefly class we recognize as a planet comes into view and you suddenly get that Serenity is in the process of deorbiting.

I loved that opening.

Yeah I've always loved the opening to the movie as well, specifically the first shot of the ship with that music. I definitely got the Serenity soundtrack just so I could listen to that bit of music...it's all very cool.

Gotta go with the basketball scene from "Bushwhacked". It's fun to see our crew just chillin' and cutting loose. We don't get to see them have fun very often. "Our Mrs. Reynolds" is another favorite with me for the same reason.

I also liked the opening to "Our Mrs Reynolds" When there was that big gunfight and then there's this big celebration party where that interesting background music is being played while everyone dances around the big bon fire. It looked like a wonderful moment in time where fun and joy was being experienced by all involved. I really loved that scene and I also really loved the music, and for the world of me I can't find it on the internet anywhere.

I'd have to go with the following:

1. Out of Gas - with Mal falling into view of the Camera and we think 'No! He can't be dead!!!';

2. The Message - with Wash entering the Freak Show Booth " Oh my god it's grotesque! Oh and there's something in a jar! [Talks to the jar with the freaky thing in it]...."Do not fear me ours is a peacefull race and we must live in harmony!"
AND there is also the part where Jayne asks everyone why they "ordered a dead guy for?"

3. Also last but not least Serenity the movie (I know it isn't technically the opener, but I had to include it - sorry) the part where the main baffle pannel falls off and:
Mal asks Wash - "What was that!?"
Wash - "Did you see that?"
Mal - "Was that the primary buffer pannel?"
Wash - "It did seem to resemble it!"
Mal - "Did the primary buffer pannel just fall off my god ramn ship for no apparent reason?"
Wash - "Looks like"
Mal then curses about Kaylee and Wash uses some techno babble concluding that the "landing could get interesting"
Mal - "Define interesting"
Wash - "Oh God! Oh God! We're all gonna die!"
Mal (on the intercom) - "This is the Captain, we have a little problem with our entry sequence so we may experience some slight turbulence and then explode!"
Mal then has another exchange with Wash then tramps off to yell at Kaylee. On the way he meets up with Jayne and Zoe
Jayne - "We're gonna explode? I don't wanna explode!"
They exchange a few other words then Zoe appears,
Zoe - "Are we crashing again?"
Mal - "Go talk to your husband!"

Well........ I know point number 3 was a long one, BUT that scene cracks me up every time.

Take care all.

Jollie36

I used to watch nothing but the Star Trek franchise and Red Dwarf..... I'm now a Firefly/ Serenity convertee! YEEEHAAAA
