Hi all!

I've come out of lurker mode to ask this question, but I don't know if any of you are allowed to answer...!

I've found the Joss-voiced intro to the original "proof-of-concept" pilot on YouTube:

Now I just want to find out more! Does anyone know more about this 'episode'? How long is it? Who's in it? Is it any good? And more importantly...

WHERE CAN I SEE IT???!!!

Cheers for any info!

Hour and a half or so. It's a rough cut of the episode Serenity.

Everybody you already know and love (or hate as the case may be) from the first episode.

Not as good as the final version but it's got it's moments. It's more of historical interest than anything else. A glimpse into the creative process that led to the eventual episode.

Cheers for that guys!

It's a shame it's RealMedia format, but beggars can't be choosers!

The reason I asked who was in it, was I was wondering if it had the "original" Inara (Rebecca Gayheart, if I remember correctly).

Thanks again!

Just finished watching the first half...

Gotta say, for all the bashing Fox get for cancelling Firefly, so far I prefer the version that got released. Quite a few of my favourite lines are missing, and I think I must be the only person it the world who likes the opening war scene! (If only for the look on Mal's face when the Alliance ships arrive - that look conveys more emotion than a million lines of dialog. You know that this guy's faith has been shattered, along with everything else in his life. The other time I see this is in "Out Of Gas", when we finally see Serenity for the 'first' time - again, it's the look on Mal's face that makes me believe he's fallen in love with this ship, and so I fall in love with it too!)

Yup. It's a finished product instead of the work in progress of the other version. Of course most of the extra win is more due to Joss punching up weak scenes than to any of the Fox input.

I thought that this was the completed pilot that was presented to F*X, which they rejected.

The aired version is the one Joss revised to meet F*X's objections to the it.

It has place holder music in place of the specially composed score. The opening sequence has a narration by Joss that was almost certainly not intended for release. It includes the original shuttle scene between Book and Inara that Joss re-shot, "To be less boring" (his words; from the commentary) and the placement of the Dobbs interrogation scene is different as well as a few mild changes that appear to have been the results of notes from Fox. Fox initially rejected even the fixed version of Serenity the episode insisting on The Train Job for the premier.

Ah, I see. This is a version between the one F*X rejected and the aired episode. I had wondered where the "Serenity Valley aftermath scene" from the deleted scenes on the DVDs fit in.

So is the version that F*X originally rejected anywhere on the 'net?

I think we may be confusing each other. I suspect this was the first pass with the execs. After they saw this version they gave notes which resulted eventually in Serenity the episode which would have been the finished pilot. Then they rejected that as well and ordered The Train Job. I'm not positive on all of this and there may have been other rough cut versions but this is the only one I know of that has surfaced on the net.
